  1. This is why i ask first , do later, many thanks for your reply, i think i can put this out of my head now and go for a mahogany body with a cap of spalt. Thank heavens for the plethora of expert knowledge on this forum.
  2. im thinking of making a complete body out of spalted maple, not just a top , the whole body. anybody done this before? what kind of problems could expect?
  3. ok , so i havent built a guitar from scratch, but the best bit for me is seeing a guitar i have restored/customised being played on stage by my son.
  4. Thanks for the replies guys, i didnt think it was going to be that easy, i might go down the powder coat route , will have to get some costings , but it might end up as chrome if things get too costly,,,, will keep you posted. Cheers.
  5. Im currently working on my next project, a standard black ibanez gax 30, im respraying it white ,putting on a new neck with an explorer type headstock, new pups etc, this is where ive drawn a blank,,,,,,,,,, does anyone know where i can get white hardware,,,, eg hardtail, machine heads etc,,,,, i know black is an easy to find colour but cant find white anywhere. Its just this is going to be an all white guitar,,,,,, pups, surrounds knobs . Cheers.
  6. This is what im trying to do,,,,,,, i have a hss setup, standard strat singles in neck and mid with an irongear 4 wire hb in the bridge, i want to coil split the hb so when the 5 way switch is in the bridge position i can switch between noth coil/hb/south coil using a 3 way toggle switch, there are no tone pots just one master volume pot. Anybody have or know of a wiring diagram for this set up. Thanking you all in advance for any help given.
  7. Thanks for the replies guys, my son wants the cavity filled, smoothed over so when we Respray the guitar (neon green!!!! His choice) it won't be seen.so the block of wood/epoxy resin/auto putty seems the best method. Keep you informed on the progress.
  8. hi to one and all, me and my son have another little project on the go , we have an sg copy we are thinking of customising, its a set neck and my son wants to remove the neck pup so he only has a bridge pup, what would be the best way to fill the cavity left at the neck position ?? i thought a block of wood and resin would be ok but thought id check first. many thanks.
  9. my son did a burnt tele once, he came home from school with a real beat up mess of a black tele, promtly took it to bits and set fire to it in the garden. he liked the look so much we cleaned it up a little put it back together and it is now his " experiment" guitar. if there is anything we want to try on a guitar it goes on this one first just to see if it was a good idea. heres a link if ya fancy a peek.
  10. sideways mounted pots are a novel thing, i did it on a flying v putting them on the sidewall of the bottom wing . gets them out of the way i guess.
  11. sorry there hasnt been any progress on this one for a while, a slight money/time shortage , i have just ordered the rest of the laminate for the body, and im getting a small finishing router for the binding soon, so things should be moving on soon.
  12. right then, i know it can be done, but is there anything more to bolting on a neck without a back plate? what type of ferrules do i need? if any. my god why didnt i look earlier,,,,,, just been on the stew-mac site, and there they are,,,, complete with fitting intructions,,,,, well thats my question answered.
  13. Yes, quite dull. Still, always nice to see our illustrious leader...even if he did make tea in my mug when my back was turned...nice mug though so... As you are going to supreme expense, I suggest going that touch further for your pickups. IronGear Pickups Obviously there are several varieties of Humbucker, including P90's. Also they have sound clips too. Very highly rated pickups, Zebra's are nice as well. What are you doing with the back of the body/neck/headstock? [/quot the back of the body will be sprayed white, my son wants the neck and headstock left in black ??? for some reason but im not so sure ,im still working on that one,,,,lol as for the pickups, they were my sons idea as he likes the look of them, coupled with chrome surrounds, i am still looking around for something that sounds good and will look good on the guitar as well so watch this space lol. anyhow,,, see ya soon matey.
  14. thanks dylan , my son cant wait either,,,,,,,, " when is it going to be finished dad" is the question i get on a daily basis. truth be told, i cant wait either, but not being able to work on it full time is a real bummer.
  15. i havent got a clue ! lol i havent started it yet, i suppose plenty of masking tape to help stop any splintering etc. i will make up a test block first to see how it goes,,,,, watch this space, lol
  16. How weird is it, that I just happened to be browsing this forum and joined today, yet just yesterday, I was looking at those pics on your laptop! Looking good TLC I might be able to help with the lacquer. lmao, prety good source of info isnt it, and how dull was that team meeting? lol. thanks for the offer of the lacquer, i will be in touch when we are close to finishing, dont hold ya breath it might take a while lol. heres a couple of links to bits im thinking of getting http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...alenotsupported http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...alenotsupported http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Neck-Bridge-Classic-...alenotsupported see ya soon.
  17. before. very bland after. very sexy, just got the binding to do and final laquer coat. oh and im having a jewler mate of mine to make a solid silver truss rod cover with a custom logo engraved on it.
  18. thanks for the kind words, this is the first time i have attempted this sort of thing so wasnt sure how it would turn out, the shell laminate i am using is a real pain in the ass as its realy thin ( less than a mm) and it cracks and shatters realy easily, but im pleased with how it is turning out, oh , heres a pic of the headstock with the tuners we will be using.
  19. that one was done on purpose, my son thought it looked cool, but then he is 12 and its his guitar lol
  20. well, we're getting there, the laminate is on the headstock and trimmed, i have given it a thin coat of laquer just to protect it, just got to wait for the abalone binding to turn up , route the head , fit the binding and give it all a nice thick coat of laquer. then all ihave to do is do the same to the body.
  21. have just started the headstock, m.o.p and abalone laminate. the edges will need trimming and routed out as we will be binding the headstock with a single black binding when the laminate is on then laquer the whole thing.
  22. what would you say would be the best top coat to put over the m.o.p ?
  23. by the way, how can i move this thread to the work in progress topic thread.?
  24. the back of the guitar now has the first coat of primer. in this shot you can see the position of the control knobs and the new position of the strat type jack socket.
