  1. lol, fooled me. probly cause gibson sucks. its all about the $$$
  2. you can buff aluminum out to a chrome finish too. if it isn't already
  3. easiest way i know, get the bridge you are going to use for sure 1st. then you can measure the height. draw a full scale diagram from the side with your bridge height and if the strings are to close to the frets you will be able to see before you start cutting anything. I think there is a better explanation if you search around here sumwhere
  4. thanks for all the info, i'll have to kick it around awhile. I was wondering if it had to do with resonance or something to that effect. Its the first of many im hoping so either way will see what happens
  5. well, as stated im making a v, 2pc maple neck thru with maple wings. at this point im finnishing up on the neck and approaching the point of no return. anyone want to talk me out of it??? originally im going for tone and sustain. i've read about wieght, but the wings being rather small im not horribly concerned about that. i've read this and that about all maple guitars most being bad but i can't really find a definate answer why. only reason i originally cut it all out of maple is cause i have a 13 ft board so if i have to make another trip to the lumber yard, thats alright to. I want to be happy with the end result. Thanks in advance! Andy
  6. have you found a guitar with a similar(very short) scale length? I'm just wondering if you are looking at like a 3/4 size guitar if you'd beable to find mandolin strings long enough to fit. I have a mandolin lurking around here sumwhere.. my fingers are to big to ever pickup playing it! also consider the width of the neck, so you dont end up with alot of fingerboard for a little strings. Good luck otherwise!
  7. sweet. I have melvyns book, he explains a way to do it but, made absolutely no sense to me. thats much easier. now that i found the tutorial section!......
  8. thanks, thats kinda what i thought. Heres a better question to ask.. Is there any good way to figure how high the strings should be from the fret board? I measured on a couple of my electrics and came up with 2mm at the nut and about 5mm at the 15th fret. as long as I use about the same size fret wire and am shooting for the same feel (setup/action) theres so many variables!! i guess thats about what it comes down to. I just want a nice playing guitar when im done.
  9. Well, part way through my 1st real build, im having troubles deciding if my neck is turning out right. Is it possible for the neck and body to be completely parralell before installing the fret board and still have the right string action in the end? Looking at the bolt ons i have there is bout 1/8th between the body and the fretboard. my ovation, the fretboard sits right on top of the body though. any pros or cons? or does it just depend on the bridge(string height) my calculations seem to be correct with no neck angle so... any coments are greatly appreciated!
