  1. I agree no one should steal someone elses work without due credit. Im not asking for tutorials to be written for myself. I collect and save anything i find useful... I have over a gig of tutorials, and images i have saved. I just thought it would be helpful for tutorials that are in depth and very helpful to be put on the homepage... I mean there isnt a single tutorial on how to actually route a neck angle into the pocket, or carve one into the body. I know how to do t his myself, but others like myself had a hard time learning things like that. Im jsut trying to help as many beginners as i can,.
  2. For some reason, the main topic that I had in mind when I mkade this post got changed around into the typical condesending attitude that many people find offensive when new to this site.. I simply said hey lets get tolgether and ALL put in and make some tutorials... I even went as far as to say I will do the carved top tutorial... I never said I wanted these for myself, im just looking at the original and basic principle and goals of this website. TO HELP, to teach, and to learn how to build stringed instruments, Specifically the guitar, and if pooling together and updating, and making changes, and adding new tutorials for the site will help some guy that is completely lost even with the help of hiscocks book, and the search function then whats the big deal? Dont we want to better this community, and help in anyway we can?? Forgive the rant, i think its the Marine coming out of me. WIth that said, when I see something that can be improved, especially with the help of others than i go to work. -Steve
  3. Not sure why using a variety of bridges would be useful. If you can do one, you can do them all. It's all exactly the same process, and between Ormsby's tutorial and Hiscock's book, it's covered pretty completely. What do you mean by "neck shims?" Like, tapered pieces to stick in the neck pocket? This would be unnecessary if you route the pocket (or angle the neck tenon) correctly. Again, if you can wire one guitar, you can wire them all if you have a decent diagram, which are available here. << excellent resource. bookmark it. shims being the pieces used to raise your neck pocket template to give the correct anglee. Also some people have a really hard time reading wiring diagrams... a pictorial would definitely be nice. I understand sometimes informal information is awesome... but sometimes readers coould benefit alot more from tutorials
  4. I agree, but the search function for these ib forums, doesnt exactly yield the best results.. Like say your searching for Neck angle, it will pull up every single thread with the word NECK in its title/body.... That doesnt necessarily narrow it down to much you know? Top Carvfing Tutorials Hammer/Chisel Method Saw Dust Generator Version T Plainer Method Neck Angle Determination (Not just a picture/diagram) One that actually walks through step by step using a variety of bridges How to make the neck shims, and how to figure out the sizes they need to be to get the correct angle How to make figured woods Pop tutorial A How to wire a guitar from scratch in different styles IE: LP, PRS Rotary, Strat ETC I think we should each take on the task of creating one of these tutorials, and submit them to the mods and have them posted on the main page. I can take the top carving using hammer/chisel.... Anyone else game? This will help the beginning builders, and help keep the un-necessary repetitive questions away. Post if you want to help with this. -Steve
  5. sweet looking guitar! I need a translator though lol.
  6. Lets make a list of tutorials that the sites missing, so we can better help the building community. Personally i think we need a tutorial on how to determine how big to make shims and how far apart they need to be to make neck angles.
  7. lol crow its so hard for me to understand you...
  8. Its ok. i definitely think it could have been done alot better, and definitely longer, especially with someone as reclusive as jimmy paige.
  9. i would sand it out, wet sand with around 800 or higher grit paper, sand the entire body, and continue the clearing process.. Send a pic of the bubbles so we can get a better look.
  10. Ive determined my neck needs a 3 degree angle. Im building a PRS SC245 styled guitar. Using prs stop tail. Now i understand how to determine neck angles, which is how I came to this conclusion, but what I sont understand is how you actually setp your overhead routing jig to rout that angle. Lets say I use a setup like mykas neck pocket jig... how high do you set the blocks under each end of thebase where the router rides, for a 3 degree neck angle
  11. Got it ready to be grain filled, and then cleared. Comments suggestions?
  12. I got finished scraping the binding and leveling it to the guitar, but there is tool marks, and some knicks in the binding from where the scraper chattererd, how can i smooth these out? Maybe some acetone on a cotton bal?
  13. Hey guys. I dont have the time/know how to build on of mykas neck jigs. And my car is in storage now, and I have no easy way to make it off base to the home depot for materials. I will pay for someone to buld me a neck pocket jig, which also allows for body/neck angle.
  14. Well took her out of the paint booth today, shes a bute. lined the control cavities with copper tape. And shes finished, minus some weather checking, paint dinging and drops. Comments suggestions?
  15. Ok i will get up with you today or tommorow when I figure out the body angle I need
  16. Ya i was talking about the intonation angle lol. I will have to give that a try... swend the lower end of the body through the drum sander first? And mark my angle lines to how far down I need to come?
  17. I was reading the neck angle post, and ive got most of the measurements except for the bridge height, simply because i havent been able to get to the shop to mount the posts in some mdf and mount the extra bridge. But here are my measuremnts for when im ready to draw out the neck angle/ .099 MM Fret Height Bridge Height Desired Action 2/32" on the treble side to 5/64" on the bass side. whic Now will it hurt for me to round up to 1mm, thats such a minute difference... Also with two different actions like that should I set the action for the diagram on the low e side?
  18. Also, how do you determine the angle that you install the stop tail?
  19. So in theory u would mark where you would want the taper to start, on the side of the body, and measure the angle and continue that line the to neck end of the guitar, and then hand plane that line down, then sand? Like htis drawing, you woudl measure the angle at Point A. Would you use some kind of trig formula, using the distance from Pt A to Point B (Being the end of the body you are carving to?) And that would give you the distance from the top of the guitar to (point C), thus giving you the correct angle at point A. Sorry if that sounds confusing. Im no good in trig, for christs sake i took geometry three times in highschool!!!! And you would use a hand plane? Any other preferred methods?
  20. So my buddy wants me to build him a SC245 replica. So he purchased all the materials and sent to me. The specs are Black korina body 4A Flamed maple top Honduras Rosewood Neck Ebony Fingerboard PRS SC245 Pickups PRS SC245 Stop tail PRS Locking Tuners PRS Scalloped Nut I have to figure out the neck angle. Im gonna draw it up to scale after i mount the bridge on MDF and measure the final height to be more accurate. Im pretty sure the angle is plained into the body of a PRS SC245. Check the pic below. Is the entire body rear of the neck pickup, including the area where the selector switch is, plained as well or just the area that the neck pocket will be routed into?
  21. they work pretty easy... can u break downa little more in depth about your neck building process?
  22. Heres some updates Comments Suggestions? Still letting nitro cure, then gona sand, weather check, chip some paint, put some dings in here and let her rip. -Steve
  23. A buddy of mine here in town turned me onto using something simliar to these. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4=263602_263622 You just bend them around your neck you want to copy the profile of, at lets say 5 fret increments, and label them. They stay perfectly in place and are mora accurate than using post card. Also you wont have to worry about scratching your neck with those harsh metal contour guages. Just my .2C -Steve
