  1. I've used it on the last 4 builds. It doesn't clog paper as long as its completely dry. That being said it doesn't fill as well as I would like. Will be trying an oil based filler soon as recommended by Tom Bartlett.
  2. The cupping is an issue you should deal with before gluing the top on. It needs to be flat on the side that will get bonded to the body. Attach some full sandpaper sheets to a flat surface and sand it down level. I think ScottR has some pictures of this process in one of his build threads. Be prepared to use a lot of elbow grease using this method. Actually Scott can probably chime in here as he's done many of his tops around existing necks to cover his deep neck tenons. As far as the F-holes, You'll usually want to cut them after you've completed your carve but before you glue the top. BTW Are you using the oak for sentimental reasons?
  3. Thats a good idea. To my knowledge there isn't a tutorial on shooting a guitar here. It there?
  4. Ya gotta be happy with that finish. Its beautiful. Any possibility on reposting how you cut the matched cavity cover?
  5. Fingers are good Mm'kaay? That cover jig was built purely out of trepidation and it still freaks me out a bit when I use it. Hopefully MasterOfTheWind has a new understanding of the potential for catostrophic digit damage a router has. I'm thinking pure luck is the only reason he doesn't have a stump where that boo-boo is. Stay safe everyone.
  6. Thats an incredible finish on that thing. I want it. A lot.
  7. That guitar your son is holding is bad ass! I've build both set necks and bolt ons and I'm in the camp that with a set neck you can achieve a much smoother and transparent to the touch transition from the neck to the body, Comparing my own builds I can say that my bolt on builds seem to edge out my set necks for sustain and resonance but just barely. Part of that might be the fact that my bolt ons are a marriage of a mahogany and maple vs my set necks which use mahogany for both the neck and body. I could be wrong here but I feel the bond between the neck and body is tighter and more solidified using a bolt on method than a glued set neck construction. If you google (and I'm sure you have) Set neck vs. bolt on you'll find hours of reading material.
  8. Am I the only one who see's all the skulls in this piece ?
  9. I'm enjoying this one. It gives a whole new meaning to acoustic-electric.
  10. Glad that didn't end badly. You would think it would be common knowledge NOT to sneak up behind someone when they're running a tool that can take fingers off right? Reading through the previous posts on the pickups and I thought I'd also suggest two more alternative PAF types. Wolfetone and Sheptone make some incredible PAF pickups and they are priced a little better at $320 a set for the Sheptones and $$260 for a set of Wolfetones. Wolfe MAY be able to cut you a deal if you ask nicely and buy multiple sets. Cant wait to see this one progress.
  11. I'll kick in my two cents and vote for no covers. They'll flatter the vexed viking look. Hmmm, "The Vexed Viking". I think I'm going to use that name for all future references to this build.
  12. You don't happen to be building this for Mike Derks are you?
  13. I'm really curious to see what you do with the nubs sticking out on the horns.
  14. Wow that things a beautiful beast. Sooooo much fret wire.
  15. Man those inlays are nice. Cant wait to see these come together.
  16. Seems like if one is going to continue building that you'd have to start selling eventually. Curious to see how it goes. As far as current projects. They're going but I've just been horrible about posting lately. Seems there is always en excuse to prevent it. Two weeks ago I had a pipe burst in my house and there have been crews in my house doing repair work ever since. Sunday was the first day I've had without them in a while. I have three bolt-ons with a revised design going at the moment. I'll get off my duff and post em. Just give me some love when I do because its been a ghost town around here lately.
  17. I was browsing the other day and wondering when you were going to build again. Now I have my answer. Where is this one bound for when complete?
  18. There was a long thread over at TDPRI about this a few years back. Heres the thread. http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/162282-designed-new-t-style-guitar-now-im-going-protect.html
  19. Started three new builds this week. I'm doing a more traditional body shape this time and plan on these being stripped more down and straight forward with simple dot markers. (No markers on one?) I started out with some scarfed necks using some figured maple I picked up locally. I started out with the intention of doing a three piece lamination on these but that quickly morphed into 7 piece laminates. Once they were flipped and glued they matched up close to perfect. I dont know how I ever got along without a drum sander. These three are progressing a little faster. I think I've got roughly 16 hrs into these so far. Not to shabby. I even have some bodies to go along with em.
  20. Drilling the pilot hole depth for the neck thickness is a great idea. Nice job.
  21. I was going to suggest the router sled method. Can you give some details about how the router sled rig didnt work out for you?
  22. Thanks Scott. The binding is like that because of the availability of tall cream binding in that shade. It allows me to use the same size all the way around.
