  1. Hmmm. I've been looking for some, I need some for my project strat. They seem to be universal, but like you said I can't find them as spare parts... Maybe someone can solve this mystery Pat x
  2. Hey, I think that this is such a basic question that it's not really covered properly, but... What is the name given to the white plastic washer things on the tuners of electric guitars? And does anybody know where they can be purchased from? Kind regards, Pat x
  3. Yeah, I've pretty much stripped the guitar and replaced everything that could be replaced with, well, replacements. I've taken measurements every step of the way in calculated efforts to be able to get the tone(s) I want from the guitar, electronics/body modifications ect., I'm just basically looking for pickups that will let me dial in an approximation, and then take it from there. Not by any stretch of the imagination am I an expert, this is my first project guitar, and it started with me wanting to re-spray it if you can believe that... I think with the options I've given myself I have a good chance of getting the various voices I want to get from the guitar, hell, it was one of the only guitars I rarely used before I started on it, now I love the thing after taking so much time with it... Obviously there's no easy fix for sounding good, I just want something that can react to the music I write and a fun and beautiful guitar to record it with. I mean, I rarely if ever use distortion, so I'm looking for pickups that sound good clean, right? I'm not looking for an archtop sound, just something a little... warmer? dustier? Pat x
  4. Hey, I messaged Catswhisker pickups yesterday and got a response the same day Allan over there suggested this 'I’d recommend a pair of Alnico 2 Moggies, wound to warm things up and your choice of cover – the nickel and plastic are the most sonically transparent.' You think this will give me a jazz tone? I'm sorry for relentlessly running things past people, but it's my first project guitar/pickup purchase Thanks, Pat x
  5. Hmm, I've heard of bareknuckle pickups but haven't checked them out yet, thanks a lot It actually sounds perfect for what I want to do, but am I right in thinking it would cost £200 to buy a set? I don't think I can afford that I'll check my options or try to pick up some second hand if I can Thanks x
  6. Hey I'm customising a squier strat and amongst other things, including the circuitry from an old archtop. This will give me a tone and volume for each pickup, as well as individual on/off switches. Can anyone suggest any pickups? I want a warm/dark(ish) jazz tone, and I've been looking at P90's... Any suggestions are welcome, I'm on a bit of a budget, but anything under £100 should be fine. Kind regards, Pat x
  7. Hey I'm thinking of putting some 'Seymour Duncan Phat Cat' P90's in my project squier strat (alder) I'll be using them on an old archtop circuit (tone and volume for each) with on/off switches for each pickup. Will they/this setup give me the warm/jazzy/dark(ish) sound that I crave? As warm and jazzy, say, as one could get without using an archtop/semi...? (I do own an outstanding 60's semi-hollow) I'm buying them second hand and they're not exactly in the best condition, with crazing and pitting to both neck and bridge... if this makes a difference? The reason I ask is that all of the reviews online mention them being great for 70's/classic rock (I don't play classic rock) and being brilliant through distortion (I rarely if ever use distortion) and I need some help! Any feedback (excuse the pun) is welcome and appreciated Kind regards, Pat x
  8. Hey, many thanks for the reply/help I'm actually using the electric rig from a 60's hollowbody... It has a volume and tone pot for each pickup. Although it doesn't give its value I'm guessing they will be 250k... What's your opinion on using this rig in a solidbody? I'm hoping the vintage circuit will do interesting things to the sound. I am planning on using p90's. (?) Literally any thoughts on this madness is much appreciated, as I admit, I'm kind of hoping for the best here. As far as finishing goes, I've never done it, but I'm guessing a few modest coats in between drying...? Is there any particular brands anyone can recommend? Again, many thanks, I'm sure in time I will learn how to search for the answers myself Pat x
  9. Hey, before I start, please be gentle, as this is my first project guitar! Basically I had an squier strat affinity series (2002 I think) that I stripped the black lacquer/colour/plastic off (slowly, with a knife) and sanded down. The wood I think is alder, I really like the look of it, it has an odd look unfinished... and since it's been sat on my workdesk, while I've been waiting on pickups/parts, it's acquired a cool yellowed/aged look. Anyway. Do I need to finish this guitar body? or can I just leave it as it is? Are there differences in tone/volume/sustain that will be noticable? And if, as I expect, it would be in my best interest to finish, how would I go about applying nitro to it? is it simple? Will it make it shiny? (I know that sounds stupid) Oh, also, I've cut some cavities in the body for a pickup on/off control plate and a killswitch, if I were to nitro, should I do these bits along with the rest? Thanks a lot, I have tons of questions so I'm pretty sure I'll be doing this very frequently from now on Kind regards, Pat x
