Ok, thanks, this is very helpful,
Once I get the pocket perfectly flat, what would be a good way to get it back up to the correct depth?
I was think of glueing a thin layer of wood, or perhaps a plate of brass, Any ideas?
Cheers
Chris
I have had an Idea as I am not very skilled with a chizel,
How about I build a wall around the open sides of the neck, (with card or wax perhaps)
and then I fill the neck pocket with epoxy a few mm, on a perfectly level bench and it will nautrally set flat.
What do you think?
Chris
When trying to shave a few mm off a neck pocket I used a sandpaper as I have no router and ended up with an uneven pocket.
I then tried to even it with a chizel and got carried away and went too deep.
Is there a good way to get a perfectly flat pocket without a router, and what would be the best method to bring the neck pocket back up to the correct depth.
Cheers
Chris
P.S
Please bear in mind this is my first guitar, (a strat) with no need for a neck angle. The more details that would help me, the better!
I did raise the studs, but considerably so, it looked akward and didnt feel right so i took about 3-4/32 off the heel
Now im finding it a little hard to get perfectly flat again
Chris
Ok, ive increased the depth slightly but am finding it quite hard to produce a completely flat pocket,
im going at it with a small sanding block very lightly,
is there a better way to check and/or get a flat pocket.
Chris
Hi, Im building a strat with this trem
http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=1996510100,
The neck depth is the STD depth of 5/8" and yet im finding i need to raise the trem considerably to meet with the neck when strung.
It looks like i should chizel a deeper neck pocket but i was wondering if there might be somehting i have over looked,
Any help would be great
Cheers

My email is chrisstrong_86@hotmail.com photo's would be great!,
i'm interested in what cap value you went with?
I'm going for 500K pots not sure on cap yet tho, i'm also thinking of going for this kit click me
but i'm really not sure on the pots provided!
Chris
Has anyone here actualy tried this setup? and are these "alpha" pots mentioned any good?
( i also notice they sells the pcb 5-way switches as "high quality" where as i was always led to belive they were cheap and unreliable)
Chris
I've bought a two point trem second hand.
Its a floydrose 2 point but not a floating it just locks like a floyd rose.
i think they used to put them on some of the deluxe strats. (says both fender and floyd rose on it, but it isnt a licensed model)
Any way i am sure it should have inserts for the two posts???
The two posts are threaded.
Oh, and where could i pick up some inserts
ITs quite like this model

Im finishing off a pre-rout strat thats made out of mahogony and really don't know how its going to sound as i've never played one.
Anyways its my first try at building a guitar and i bought the GFS premium hot alnico's
(btw its s/s/s configuration)
Is this a safe bet on a good sound or would a lower output set suit mahogony better?
as i don't have unlimited money any help is well appreciated
Chris
Whats everyones favourite way of wiring a strat s/s/s, from a fairly simple start it appears to become a rather controversial topic.
So let me know!!!
Cheers
Chris
Yeah it is the neck join and i do have the ferrules and screws,
however from looking at other designs such as the ed roman or jems and the like,
the four screws do not appear to be square,
one is always out of align with the tradition neck plate square square.
Chris
I think new ideas like these are great and if you like them then go for it!
People seem to be more bothered about how a guitar looks and its cool factor, than how it sounds, hence the popularity of PRS i suppose,
for many if a guitar looks cool and it is popular then they will like how it sounds,
i'm the oppoiste it can look **** even tho elegance is a rather large bonus i base my liking for a guitar 95% on how it sounds and plays!
has anyone ever played one?
I would be very interested in how they play!!!
Chris
P.S i dont think they look to bad!
I've decided to go ahead and use ferrules and no neck plate on my neck join,
can anyone tell me if its worth drilling the guitar first then contouring the neck, or visa-versa?
Also are ferrules kinda standard or do you get good or bed ones?
i've heard of top ferrules and have no idea what they are, maybe for strings?
This is my first guitar so any handy tips would be well appreciated!
Cheers

HI,
Check out http://www.reranch.com, offers many good solutions to your questions.
Also check out http://www.stewmac.com/
and maybe do some reading,
Dan Erlewine's book "Guitar Player Repair Guide" has a good section on refinishing
chris
I've never been sure about screw placement without a neck plate, its for strat you see.
Is there a good tutorial using ferrules?
Also the neck plate at www.allparts.com is a different contour, doesnt look quite as good as the fender ones, has anyone compared?
Cheers
Chris
