  1. ::sigh:: I wish I knew what type of wood it was. This might be a long shot, but I'll take a pic of it and post it. It looks like it's maple, but it's an import (anyone ever heard of Suzuki making basses?). It's hard like maple is, and moderately heavy. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to tell you what type of maple it is. What if I were to do a few passes of stain? I have an oil-based stain (Minwax) that looks good on test pieces of a similar color wood. Here's a pic of the grain towards the headstock. There are a few dings in it, but this is the bare wood.
  2. I'm refinishing my bass and want to stain the back of the neck since it's very pale. I was just wondering which type of stain would be best if I'm going to finish it with a lacquer.
  3. Ok, thank you. I can find copper shielding tape at Home Depot or Ace Hardware, right?
  4. Thanks GregP, exactly what I wanted to know. Are there any other products, aside from aluminum, that would be more consistent? I think there's a type of paint you can get that does the job, but painting in there looks to be somewhat of a pain in the butt. Thanks again!
  5. I'm going to be wiring up my P bass copy in the next couple months (whenever I get my pickups and pickguard ). I think I should be fine using regular 22AWG stranded copper wire, with some cavity shielding (aluminim sticker paper should work, right?). I was wondering if shielded wire would make a lot of difference. The pickups I'm getting are DiMarzio Split Ps, each pickup is its own humbucker.
  6. I'm having difficulty understanding the whole finishing process for a body. What I've gathered was that you'd need a sealer, color, and then a clear coat, assuming it's a solid color. Everywhere I read, it tells me something slightly different. I don't have very much experience with paints, so I'm not really sure what the difference is between a sealer and a primer, and other stuff like that. Sorry for the noob question, every tutorial I read seems to go specifically in one direction, and doesn't really give an overview of the process. I have a book on guitar repairs, have looked through several different forums, and have checked the home site here for tutorials and stuff. I keep getting hung up on all the different terms used, I think that's my major problem. If anyone could give me a brief overview of the process, I think it might be helpful. Thanks in advance and sorry again for the noob question.
