  1. Thanks Guys I will buy a cheap one. Not a generic one but an http://www.asimeto.com or an http://www.insize.com/ caliper would be fine.
  2. First of all im a noob, and I need to buy a caliper, so I was looking for brands and if it would be mechanical or digital. Well, I managed to confuse me even more.. I know that calipers can measure up to 0.001" of accuracy or even better so the first question is, is it neccesary for guitar building that the caliper could measure with that accuracy ? beacuse i presume that if it is so, the caliper should be a good one with superb quality. I know that chinesse calipers are not the best ones but the error margins that they handle can affect us for guitar building ? Do you know the Asimeto and Insize brands in USA ? I know that Mitutoyo is a great Brand but here are vey expensive and they are made in Brazil not even in Japan. And the other question is what do you recomend me a mechanical one or a digital one ? Can you tell me your experiences ? Thx
  3. Rightnow Im considering two choices for Plunge Router. I dont know if one is better than the other for bench. .- Bosch GOF2000 CE Professional 2000W (3.25HP 13.5 lbs) Cannot find this model in USA, maybe is it the 1619EVS model there?) $500.- .- DeWalt DW621 1100W (2HP 9 lbs) $320.- I know that the Bosch router has a button to lock the springs for using upside down under bench, but dont know if the DW has it...I dont want to buy a PC just for that And has the DW router Enough power for harder woods ? Thx
  4. I was looking for Milwakee drills too its great coz they offer 3 year warranty but they are made in China here, The one you have is made in China ?
  5. mmm... would be great but if I'd have a place to put a scroll saw I'd buy a bandsaw instead. Im gonna make 2/3 guitars a year tops and I dont have a workshop to leave bench tools. I know that its not the better choice to cut wood but that's why Im looking for a high quality jigsaw. Bosch has a Jigsaw that cuts 120mm of wood for example, why you people say that with a jigsaw cannot cut drop tops ?
  6. Hi, Im going to start buying some power hand tools and the brands that I can get are Dewalt, Bosch, Makita, Metabo, Porter Cable, B&D and Skill I will start with a Jig, a Router and a Drill (cordless ?) for building guitars What are the models that you recommend me to buy, Money its not an issue here, just want power tools that do the job correctly. I see some expensive jigs where you cannot cut a straight line right.... so that's what i mean Other issue is the "made in"... I can get Dewalt from Brazil, Mexico, Czech... Bosch from Germany or Switzerland, and so on. Beside that, what are the recommended power that this tools should have ? Tell me about your experiences please.. Thx Demian
  7. I don't understand american measurements.... its so complicated... why dont you use much simpler and more accurate measures like millimeters ? What is 29/32 ???? How do I suppose to understand that?, how do you do it ?
  8. PLEASE PEOPLE CAN WE UPDATE THIS THREAD WITH A GOOD LINK BECAUSE ITS PINNED AND ITS USELESS.
  9. Hi Melvyn, I have seen your book in Emule P2P Net as e-book coming from several nods. I have to be honest that I used Emule sometimes to download some things.. I live in Argentina and let me tell you that here (as many other countries) is not very easy to BUY a book or CD music or whatever because you have all the restrictions you can imagine.(credit cards, shippings, custom issues, goods stealing, etc) And if you can surpass those restrictions you have to pay a fortune for it (currency Devaluations). thats discouraging to buy something coming from another country. I didnt have a credit card (its not easy to get a card here) and I couldnt really get your book from any store here in Argentina and beleive me that I even beg some stores to tell me if they could bring it from USA to me..and they never even tell me how much it would cost coz they didnt care.. About ordering from internet we have some important problems with customs here coz sometimes they steal goods coming from another countries and when you ask of course they tell you that they dont know nothing about it..or sometimes you have to go to custom to get it and pay a bribe to get it. It a big risk to order something, pay for it 5 more times what you people pay for it, and dont know if you are gonna get it anyways. I only told you this because I think this is not a problem from Argentina only and I think that is the reason why so many people have to download from internet without paying for it. (but yes, not all the people do it for the same reasons). I know that this not justify the act of download ilegal copies of copyrighted products but I think this is A reason why so many people do this. However, I didnt know your book until I entered to this forum.. There was hundreds of helpful people here that told me to buy that book coz was very good one to start on it. So I saw the price of it in Amazon and I knew the risk on the horizon. Finally could get a friend´s credit card and bought it from amazon with also the Martin Koch one. I dont remember exactly now but I think I ended up paying $100 US.- (for me is like if you would pay $300.- you know devaluations ).. The books arrived home without problems. The main reason why I bought it was because it was a fair and good price.. so knowing your effort to do it (thanks to PG guys:)) even knowing that I have the possibility to download it from internet and Without traversing risks I decided to buy it anyway. Sometimes you try to do things in a correct way although sometimes its not enough. Thanks, Demian.
  10. I dont know but I think I saw it in a Dan Erlewine video repairing it, doesnt it ?
  11. Well yes, to be sincere I was afraid at the beginning with the making of a neck because as everyone says or think its maybe the most difficult part. I was in the same rail with this so I was undecided to do it. Something that I was seeing in several custom guitars or replicas in my country is that they look great but when you play it its no so great, and thats where I though it was a difficult thing to make it sound great. I mean for example I have played several originals Ibanez RG or Jems and of course the confort, sensation when you play it, the sound, all is great, but when I played some replicas of jem or RG models, made by luthiers, they looked great ,some times even better than the originals, but when you play it its not the same. So that its where I think maybe you need to know, beside from making it look great, how to make it sound great too. Thats the point where you need to have lot of experience. Thats why I think the making of the neck is the main key on this purpose. However, I have played replica custom guitars that sound better than the originals too and that is amazing, really amazing when you have done a guitar that sound better than anyone bought in a store. Damian.
  12. Thank you all guys.. I really appreciate your long dedication to answer me very much. Ok, so I will start at least with a guitar from scratch for sure.. then I will see how I go on. I know a real good luthier so I will ask him if he could make me a kit guitar to start with, following some advices from here of course.- Thanks, Demian.
  13. Hello people, I have 27 years old, I´m a guitar player and I like guitars very much..(especially Ibanez models ) I was very anxious when I saw this forum for the first time two years ago, because I liked the idea to make my own guitars (especially because in my country the prices are ridiculous and there are not too much variety of guitars to choose) so, thanks to this forum, I bought two books from amazon: the hiscock´s one and the Martin Koch´s one. The big issue is this: I have no experience with wood in anyway. I have never even use a drill before in my life. So would you recomend to me to start "playing with cheap woods" to get experience or you all people think that one who wants to beging with this have to make a wood practice course or something like that to get experience or starting to know how to calibrate or repair guitars for example? I mean is it worthy if I begin with this ? because you know, I would have to buy and invest in tools to begin with ? Is it essential to have a big place to work with ? Anyone of you people began with this with no experience at all or you had have wood experience before ? Sorry If I ask something that was done 1000 times before, I´m very serious with it. I think if I go into it, it could tweak my life and job in a future.. Thanks, Demian.
  14. Guys, I have a new luthier bolt on guitar and the other day playing it I realized that The Neck moved a little. So I hold the body and tried to move the neck to see if was an impression the first time, and guess... did it again. the neck moves if I hold the body and try to push the neck down a little hard that If I pull it up it move again, I have others guitars and never did that. So, I wonder if the problem are the size of the 4 screws that hold the neck, because I tried to thigten the screws and they was fine and hard. Its a little movement its not big deal, but I`m scared if it give me big troubles in a future especially for the 2 little pieces of wood that are in the sides of the neck from the body. How can I resolve this problem... Do you know if I have to adjust something or worst, change something ? Demian Ahh its a AAJN shape!
  15. Yeah!! thats What I asked for...because I leave the excess with the ball-end on the headstock.OK, now I learn a little more. But, It could be possible anyway using locking nut ? That`s why I always left the excess string,I thought that the locking nut avoided a tuning problem.
  16. Guys, I Have been doing a search, reading PG tutorials and reading some outside notes, but could find what I was looking for. Last, I was restringing without cutting the ball heads and put it them in the headstock direction and leaving the rest of the not used string along. In other words, I dont cut the excessive string neither the ball head, just cut (for the higher strings only) the thinner part of them. So, A luthier told me that is a wrong method of putting the strings because it could have intanation and setup problems, Is that true? In that case, WHAT IS THE BEST WAY OF PUTTING THE STRINGS FOR FLOYD ROSE TREMS ? should I cut the ball head of each one? Do I have to cut the excessive part of the string that I`m not going to use? THANX; Demian.
  17. What is b/f ? because I get hoduran mahogany at the same price for 300mm x 300mm x 1" thickness. (raw wood) Demian
  18. Guys, do you know where I could find different full scale guitar plans in internet (I dont want to buy them ).? I have a jem body plan for example with all the measurements, and I would like to have the strat, les paul, etc guitar plans. Thanx, Demian.
  19. Lignum Vitae ? How much HPs do I need in the electrical machines to cut it ?
  20. Just do a forum search on litchfield and you should find an answer to your question. ← Yeah!!! I have already did that and read some... but didnt found the post that raise his nerves. If someone link it to me... welcomed
  21. I don´t... but I like that girl in the home page.
  22. Talking about that "Jeff Litchfields " who is he? Is he a Pro ?
  23. Babelfish translates that as: I take the "ins. eb" part to mean inlaid ebony. But I could be wrong. ← "Tastiera" I almost suer that means fretboard. the "eb" I suppose that means ebony So THIS is inlayed ebony too ? ?
  24. maybe different woods ? ? ohh come on! how difficult is that ? HERE AWESOME
  25. Hi, I saw some guitar pictures with the fretboard painted generally with the same colour of the body and its look very cool Like this MORE So, whats the posibilities of doint it in all the fretboard for example (not inlays)? Could you paint it and laquer it then ? Doesnt ruin the wood of the fretboard ? Demian
