  1. It seems like an eternity has passed since I post my Priest Tribute for GOTM June 2007, usual excuses, moving countries, having kids, no money etc.... Anyway 2nd build is near completion, I haven't got any of the work in progress pics as my harddrive failed so so only got before and after paint pics left :-( Build is pretty simple, rock maple through neck with alder body wings. Inlay is white, yellow & black pearl with a couple of pieces of abalone. Dissappointed that the yellow and black pearl didn't hold it's colour after radiusing the neck, lesson learned. Body, neck and headstock bound with white plastic. Zero neck angle so recessed TOM bridge. Hardware will be satin chrome - sperzel locking tuners, dunlop strap locks and string through ferrules. Electrics - EMG89 and Fernandes sustainer, 1 volume pot, 3-way switch and kill switch. I hope it isn't another 3 years before I get around to doing my next build. Chris
  2. Hi, I have to call this built 'Priest Tribute' as it is based on Glenn Tipton's GT Custom Hamer circa 1986, if you've ever seen the truely awful promo video for 'Turbo Lover' you'll know exactly which guitar. The headstock is based on a pointy ESP, and the MOP inlayed logo is my initials CJW and not LTD as my friend pointed out they looked like. This guitar has been in build since Aug 05, mainly based on the fact my workshop is a spare bedroom in 3rd storey city centre flat, which also served as a guest room. I am pleased the way it has turned out and I have managed to get a good setup on it to facilitate shredding. I have also posted a link to a short video clip to demostrate it's playability (although the sound is poor as it is coming through the mic on my webcam). But pumped through my Marshall it has great tone and sustain. The specs are; 1 piece rock maple thru-neck (42mm at nut 60mm at 24th fret) thin profile reinforced with CF, scale length 25.5" Body - alder Picks EMG81 -bridge) EMG85 -neck with an Afterburner switch Tonepros locking bridge Fibre-optic side fret markers 12" radius bound ebony fretboard with MOP inlay MOP Judas Priest Logo inlayed into ebony trussrod cover Thanks, Chris VIDEO CLIP http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/doo...;current=PT.flv
  3. How about this skull? Or you could think slightly out of the box, pick a cool font and then just write "Metal as F**k" up the fretboard, cheesy but to the point :-) Chris
  4. Amazing inlay. The sign of a good death metal logo is that it has to be spikey and totally unreadable. It looks awesome now it is fully inlayed into the fretboard. How many pieces is the inlay made up of??
  5. I have both a KV2 and a DV8, and you can see from this pic there is a noticable difference. I am off on holiday for 2 weeks tomorrow so if you can wait send me a message with what measurements you require and I'll do them for you when I get back. Chris
  6. It took me 3 months working a little in the evenings and longer at weekends to get from raw materials to finished product. I can't remember how long in hours but I would estimate 25-30hrs cutting the MOP and then the same again filing the pieces to make sure the curves all flowed as smoothly as possible. It then took about 8 hrs to rout out the ebony. Hopefully I can do my 2nd one quicker. Chris
  7. Yeah, I took the pattern from the first 4 frets of the Ken Lawrence guitar and then repeated it 3 times down my fingerboard enlarging it slightly to match the width of the neck.
  8. Thanks for the comments. All I was saying with the artistic talent comment was that I am not great at drawing off the top of my head and have to trace or copy other designs. I was just being clear that I wasn't trying to gain credit for it being an original design. I used MOP blanks that I bought from some guy in Australia off ebay. I'd definately consider doing some work for others in the future but to be realistic that is a few years off yet due to my domestic situation and my portfolio being a bit limited. Chris For info this is where I got the idea from.
  9. That worked well for me too. I tapered my ebony, routed the inlay pattern glued the pearl in then slotted it, then added the radius. I sank the pearl very slightly below the top surface of the ebony so it didn't become paper thin at the edges when adding the radius. If your inlay doesn't touch the binding I wouldn't get too worried. However on reflection I think for my next fretboard I will taper, slot, route and fit the inlays as cutting through the mother of pearl was a real pain as I proved to myself if you rush whilst cutting through it, it cracks and delaminates very easily. (inexperience shining through) I am a massive Explorer nut too!!!!! Good luck can't wait to see the your grinding appliance complete!! Chris
  10. These are the best pics I have. Good luck. wolfman2 wolfman1
  11. Sorry to burst the bubble, but have a second look at my comment in the first post re: no artistic talent. I have a large photo library of guitars from trips to music fairs, surfing the web etc, the dragon was one I found a few years ago. The photo wasn't great quality but fiddling with the brightness and contrast of the image was enough to start me off, I free handed it from the photo and improvised the areas which were not so clear. Not my design so happy to share it if anyone wants hi-res scans.
  12. Thanks for the comments guys I appreciate it. With regards Doeringer's comment about being dissapointed with his/her block inlays, I thought about this and during my practice attempts found it much harder to route a straight line than a curve, hence no straight lines on the design. Talking of designs I already have my second sketched out. My main problem is I start numerous projects and struggle to finish them, so I must keep focussed and finish this first guitar before I start cutting MOP for a 2nd fret board. If anyone wants to beat me to it, be my guest. I have decided not to make the body exactly as in the picture as I prefer the variation of this body shape which has the rounded corners, haven't got a picture to hand but if you have seen the 'Painkiller' video then you'll know what I am talking about. As for the Rob Halford jacket, my options are open :-) I'll move over to the 'in progress' forum when I start the body/neck. Need to do some thinking, drawing and planning first. Until then cheers!!!!
  13. Yeah it is my first full fret board. I practiced all the techniques on scrap before I had the courage to start the real thing. I started my working life on the tools so I am comfortable work to drawings and making components to tolerances, I basically just took my time with it. For my sins I am also a massive Judas Priest fan, contrary to everyone else I have ever met I really like Glenn Tipton's Custom Hamer; As this guitar is not a production model I approached 2 custom shops for quotes to make one but both rejected my submission on grounds of not wanting to upset Hamer and said I would need to change the body shape. So I thought sod it I'll make it myself, slowly :-)
  14. I have been toying with the idea of building a guitar for some time. I must thank all the poster's to this forum for the free advise I have regularly taken. I have now taken the plunge and finished my first fingerboard. The idea is not orginal as I have no artistic talent. The idea was taken from a Ken Lawrence Explorer I saw on the ESP forum which I expanded upon. It has taken me around 3 months to complete this fretboard. I have some ideas for a guitar I would like to stick this onto, but living in a 3rd floor city centre flat presents me with with a few issues. 15. Mindbogglingly exquisite finish and I take my hat off to you. As an Explorer fan IMHO the body shape against the orignal is slightly more than noticable. However if your happy with it, that is all that matters, no debate. Chris
