  1. Try your larger hardware stores for lacquer in cans or a furniture supply store in Aus. As you've heard lacquer is not as durable as poly but is easier to achieve a fast good finish as it dries very fast. As far as sound i think lacquer might be better on acoustics (or a much lighter amount of poly) and poly on electrics but the debate goes on....
  2. One of a kind B4k with rare brazillian rosewood top.Hard rock maple graphite reinforced neck with ebony board.Sounds and plays excellent.AllUSA.$450 see at http://www.81x.com/johnphoto/Guitar
  3. Heres my kit project.john http://www.81x.com/johnphoto/Guitar
  4. Dave if you are going to do color than just get that color. No mixing with clear.Think of pigment as color only.Color -stains,dyes,and tints that are added to clear.Finishs such as lacquer and poly are available in clear or colors.Clear is put over color to give that deep look. lacquer is fast drying to work with and the best results are the solvent(lacquer thinner) based which require spraying.Danger explosives!Flashing is moisture traped in finish appearing whiteish.Retarder is added to resolve. Poly-more durable and is also available water base.Safer. Sounds like you might just wanna try the spray cans in color and then coat with clear.Hope this helped.
  5. Benjaman Moore-Benwood-clear low luster water base acrylic polyurethane can be brushed or sprayed.Very user friendly.Good over stains.Sand finer as you go. Never use steal wool with it though. No explosion worries.
  6. If just on the surface a wetsanding and rebuff, but only if you are up to such a task.Could end up refinish job.
  7. Thanks guys.I was going to do flame maple but got this veneer cheap off ebay.also for some cabinet doors. I learned not to try and overlap veneer on the sides of the guitar because you're going to trim back to make contoured edges anyway. Also plan your design layout completely before you start,I did one half then decided I didn't like the way I had the grain pattern and had to remove. Not fun. I also was going to do a burst to hide edge but decided I like this way.The bass is tonaly amazing now.Evan if for sound alone it was well worth it.I love it! Anyone considering doing-check the tutorial by Brian.
  8. before-lacquer on Carvin B4 alder bass kit.Wanted a change. after- Brazilion rosewood top added also on head stock. This is 2pcs seamed to form a figure that looks like a flame. The edges are from light. This time around I used a water based acrylic poly, very durable.I can't tell you how much better this made in the sound and resonance of this bass. The only thing I can atribute this to is added mass.Truely came alive.Check out the grain points around neck. 2 1/2 days to do complete job.Why the rush?
  9. As a finisher since I was 17. 32 years I regret , this very subject my demise.exit stage rt.
  10. I do gloss lacquer fininsh,600wet sand then, dry steal wool out #0000 then wool and lemon oil. Leaves the best fell with no drag. Also seals good.
  11. Very very nice. I notice a little extra stock at neck & head .Strength? Is that spruce top?
  12. I think what you are referring to is you put glue on the top of the guitar and the veneer side to be glued to top.So the to halfs both have glue.
