1. Heres a little diagram I whipped up, i'm sure this is how everyone else does it but I was just never taught or found out so I had to figure it out on my own
2. Thickness is just under 1mm. It would definitely be easier to bind the top after its glued down but with a deep tenon I couldn't route the binding channels where the body meets the neck on the top side, if its glued on so I had to do it all before. Technically I could have routed the channels and waited until the top was attached to the body to glue the bindings in
3. I like it But partially it's just showing what I can do when it comes to building. People knowing I can do something fairly difficult will give them more confidence in things more simple Haven't updated this thread here lately but a quick pick, top is carved and bindings done.. Top is still rough Seeya - Josh
4. This is BEFORE any sanding flush so it looks a little rough buti ran out of time Take Care
5. pearl arrived today and the neck is done! I'll post pics tomorrow when i wake up. Next is fretting to answer a few questions/comments I meant to type 30" not 20, and its the same blank in all the pictures its just the way i figured out to cut the scarf I can get an extra 8" or so over the 3 to 4" past the end of the fretboard that I would already have. If I can remember I'll draw up a diagram of how I did it. Makes a short blank long enough for a neck-thru or deep tenon using this method Yup its my first pearl and purfling job and it turned out great. I dont think i'll be able to use the yellow dye, the pearl has strong green accents all through it. Doesnt seem like it will color coordinate! Neck Pocket Talk: Yeah I was thinking about expansion and contraction as well. about using glued laminates, it doesn't directly contradict my glueless neck pocket since the laminates run parallel to each other. All pieces of the neck would be in direct contact with the top and the body. make sense? I have to decide what color would suit this now consideringthe color of the pearl! Suggestions welcome
6. You're right! I'd just feel better if there's some sort of securing concepts taken though just so when someones changin string they're not like why did my neck just fall off. ha. well... thing is my neck pockets are usually tight enough that it have to use a clamp to squeeze it into place I dont think it'd be too easy to pull out. That's a really neat concept though!
7. Hoogle, I'm soo finishing this one =D the last ones weren't good enough! As you know pretty well one has to have the highest standards when it comes to building. Kenny haha well I've been takin pictures from the start and just uploaded them all yesterday but now i'm at a standstill waiting for this pearl! I guess I could route binding channels on the quilt and carve the top... maybe.
8. Screws better than gluing? If that's what ya mean I've read multiple places about essentially any glue damping tone or vibration transfer from neck to body. Thinking more, tapering or notches in addition to securing with screws should give the best solid non-glued surface to surface connection. I guess it's just another reiteration of the "what really DOES have an impact on tone" discussion, finishes, neck contact, glues, pickup rings etc etc. Thanks WezV Elysian, O_o... SWEET! =] That would be awesome if it works!!!
9. screws =] inside the guitar like my first build Tapering is probably a better idea but they both essentially achieve the same end goal
10. haha that's crazy dude =] Truss relocation is a cool thought! I dont know how a varied relief would affect action though it doesn't seem like it would be a positive effect, have you drawn up some diagrams or plans to test effects theoretically? Might be cool!
11. Thanks I did it in the quest for the best direct wood connection possible, there wont be any glue in the pocket just as the first build. The channel on each side is for the bwb purfling on each side of the 3mm pearl that hasn't arrived yet Yup it's like that, not to that extreme so it's more subtle
12. Hand cutting inside b/w/b purf Some more shots, this is as far as I am right now, at day 4 I'm waiting on the pearl until I can do anymore Happy Building! - Josh PS: Top and neck aren't glued yet just dry assemble
13. Might be doing it with this sample, haven't decided yet contrary to the thread subject =] *This is day three at this point*
Truss glued/Finger board radiused and reslotted/Channels routed < Starting to apply binding I think I'm just gonna clear coat it like this XD
14. Binding routes started Headstock overlay first binding channel routed purfling/pearl channel routed White binding glued First b/w/b purf glued Second Better shot of the asymmetrical neck, can't really tell too well but the effect is subtle in sight!
15. Routing shape and headstock with template
Body blank planed, cut, chambers routed Asymmetrical neck contour routed and rough shaped Deep neck pocket routed, for aesthetic and comfort reasons I decided on a recessed tom instead of neck angle. Typical neck pocket test
16. Alright so my last two builds weren't up to my standards and I just wasn't happy with them, so I started all over from scratch, with new tools, more templates and best challenge I could throw at myself to test my building skills, and make sweet a** guitars! =] Neck pieces arrived, one 3/4/20" Mahogany blank and flamed maple center laminate. Cut/planed/glued The blank is big enough for two necks but I need more length for a deep set neck
Scarf Ears
17. Good job dude! That neck looks very clean and tight =]
18. i love you I want to make a multiscale!
19. yeah good for you dude! **** haters!! Just kiddin, kinda.
20. Yeah i just copy/pasted it from my auction =] http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=260262921427 This bridge was NEVER installed / Soldered! It's been sittin in the box for a month. This was purchased for a guitar of mine but I've changed my mind on the color of hardware ( see the two gold SH-4's for sale too! ) It has been opened meaning the instructions and hardware was taken out of the plastic and such. But again 100% of everything is there! Theres more than what the picture shows, theres a stereo output jack / and a pot /other little hardware that is included normally. This comes with the Control-X Mixer/Preamp! This can be installed in any normal guitar that has a TOM bridge with minimal modifications! This allows either hexaphonic or normal installation meaning it can be installed in correlation with midi control or as a Piezo bridge for acoustic sounds! Normally retails separately for $90! This whole package retails for $265 + Shipping from most retailers and my reserve will start out at a phenonimal price! If you're in the market for this awesome combo then snag this up!
21. well the top on the blue guitar, the planer took a huge chunk out of the thin part where the control cavity was beh.. I had to replace the blades I found they had some chips in them. This new one is going to be carved top too! So it should be an upgrade all around =]
22. Skiye, forgive me if I'm being obvious but it's called Quilted Maple, the pattern you're seeing is the actual wood. Yup dye can make the figure in the grain pop to extremes when done right! (that dye job was no example of what one can do) but it's really cool stuff. Xanthus, =] You guessed it pretty good ha, it's got a piezo bridge, and a VERY simple knob configuration, theres one main volume, and then a seperate knob for mixing piezo/mag. P/U, and the two holes in the center you see are the mini 3 way switch for selecting outputs: PIEZO / PIEZO & MAG MIX / MAG ; and the other selects either stereo or mono output, so you could send the piezo and mag to seperate inputs or amps. The wiring on the piezo could be wired hexaphonically I guess for MIDI tracking capabilites but I've never done anything like that before. Oh an update, my planer broke up the quilted top on the electric so that's pretty much ruined =[ But on a better note, I ordered a way better quilt set, a full mahogany body and neck and flame center laminate for the whole back of the guitar and neck, new ebony fretboard, frets everything I need. I also ordered enough paua for binding around the entire body fretboard and headstock, plus B/W/B layers for around it, and I'm cutting up this small flame maple billet I have for really intense flamed binding, how it should be. The only thing I wasn't floored about the neck from soulmate was that the binding was most like 3A or less because the figure was almost nonexistent. The neck figure was excellent tho but it made the contrast to the weak binding noticable, at least to me =] seeya guys!
