  1. I haven't seen a single speck of snow here in Toronto. Might be the pollution....
  2. Really nice guitar you've got there. I can't wait to see you apply your skills to a fanned fret 8 string. Question though - I've read a few different ways to do fanned frets, but i was of the same mind as Jammy where the 12th fret is totally straight and considered the midpoint of the fan.... is that what you're doing? I'm just trying to understand methods for fanned frets as i'm considering attempting it.
  3. I can pull pinches without a problem.. they sound all good! The 45 in my 8, while having the dual blades, is actually the "single coil" version....i just ordered the wrong one. Sounds very sparkly when put clean and rips with heavy distortion. Very different sound, but I've actually grown to love it. I've also ordered the push/pull 45TW model that's essentially a big EMG 89.
  4. I really don't find that tonal imbalance that people talk about with this thing (EMG). All of my strings ring out clear as day and cut thru heavy distortion without any issues at all. Playability wise, I also don't understand why people say this thing would be hard to play. I spent a couple of hours getting used to the neck and now it feels as normal as a 7 or a 6.....and i've got short fingers. I'll use Movie Maker sometime soon - I just got fed up finally getting the drivers installed for my camera, losing the software and not being able to download it. I hadn't even thought about it because the thought of my webcam irritates me....
  5. the 60 could stand to be a little tighter, but I use really light strings on my 6's, 7's and the 8 that the 60 is just about right. I use a 54 as my low B on my two Ibanez 7's (for the past 10 years) and i've got no issues with it.... I tried playing some of the newer Meshuggah stuff with the low F# and it's decent. I mainly use it to extend scales... I finally got my webcam working properly, but i can't find the bloody software to do a video recording! Logitech doens't allow for the software that I used to be downloaded so i'm in a spot of trouble with that. As for being bald, i hadn't shaved my head in a while. I used to have about 2 feet worth of hair, but after burning the tips off while smoking (since quit) or getting it stuck in the car windows, i said the hell with it and shaved it off. Here's me playing the geetur at a live show on Halloween!
  6. Awesome!! Thanks man! (that'll teach me to use the search function a little more often...)
  7. Here's a longshot. I want to make a Stealth, there's no way i can find one locally and I can't find a template anywhere. Anyone?
  8. I've got the same bridge you've got and I use a .60 gauge for my F#. Fits perfectly without any force and sits nicely in the saddle. It does not however, like going thru the tuning post. That takes a little convincing.
  9. I've had to buy two sets of 3+3 for my 7 and 8 strings.... it really sucks. I can't find anywhere that sells individual sperzels or grover locking tuners....
  10. I'd redo the neck. It'll be one of those things you regret if you continue and finish the guitar.
  11. Slot the board, then taper. Getting the fret slots cut when the board is tapered wouldn't be fun.
  12. Thanks for the offer! I sadly bought a lot of zebrawood already with the intent of making neck blanks, fretboards and tops. I might make a table out of one of them.....
  13. ah....i'm going to rethink my idea using of zebrawood. Thanks everyone for the input and info! Have to figure out a neat maple/mahogany/purpleheart sort of thing now.... with a zebrawood fretboard......and zebrawood capped mahogany wings...... gotta find a place for all that zebrawood now!
  14. Hey everyone.. I was really thinking about using a pair of zebrawood neck laminates in my 5 piece laminate neck. I have a few concerns 1) i haven't seen it used for neck wood. Which might answer my wondering right there.... 2) The pieces i have are more than long enough and wide enough to get perfect sizes. Problem is that they're arlready quartersawn. If i make the neck with these boards, the grain will be going in the undersirable flatsawn direction, with the other boards in quartersawn direction. So stead of ||||| for a grain pattern across the 5 boards, i'll have |-|-| . Would that be highly undersirable? I really want to use zebrawood in the neck. 3) that beig said, i have board large enough for a bolt on neck which is already quartersawn. I know it'll be heavy, but it'll look good. Any other concerns?
  15. Why isn't CC Deville on this list.... for shame.
  16. More progress - recessed the tuneomatic tailpiece area, tuners drilled...... Headstock
  17. Nothing short of phenomenal. I hope my attempts at clearcoat come out as remotely nice as that.....
  18. That looks psychotic....i'm so blown away. What pickup configuration are you going to be using? Anything more than one humbucker would upset me......
  19. I finally finished everything on the guitar that I wanted to do. Here's the headstock inlay. I picked up a .60 string recently and restrung it back to F#. It's a little on the floppy side, but not too bad, and it actually intonates. When i get the courage to show my playing, I'll make a vid on the webcam.
  20. Damn Rista...thats horrible news. I clicked on the updated link hoping to see this monster but..... Question for you - what kind of wood do you want and how thick? I happen to have a lot of mahogany, maple and purpleheart sitting on a rack that i'm not using. Other question - which country are you in?
  21. Megadeth/Marty Friedman - Tornado of Souls Steve Vai - The Audience is Listening Sol Niger Within/Fredrik Thordenal - Bouncing in a Bottomless Pit Carcass/Michael Amott/Bill Steer - Anything off Heartwork....
  22. Hey all, I tried one of these Tobias basses with the asymmetrical neck and I was floored. Stupid me though, i didn't see where the truss rod was. So my questions are.... where do you put it? In the middle? down the part of the thickest section? do you use two rods? Anyone had any experience with these?
  23. I dunno, after you've already got the tools and whatnot, I'm not so sure that buying a guitar is cheaper than making one. When you build your "ultimate" guitar, you want it a specific way. If you were to order something custom from PRS (not sure if you can, but it's a nice example), i'm imagining the costs would be nuts. Their "high" end guitars cost an arm and a leg. If you are planning on this being the only guitar you build, it's definitely going to cost you an insane amount of money. But if you're lookin at this as something you want to continue with, building guitars that suit your fancy shouldn't cost you more than a decent guitar in the store. I actually started building guitars because i couldn't afford to buy the guitar i wanted ($4200 US) and after building it and buying every single power tool, hand tool and supply that i wanted and needed, i still haven't hit that 4200 mark. Buliding guitars is not a cheap hobby, but the rewards are priceless.
  24. I picked up mine at Lee Valley. One of the most dangerous stores to be in on pay day lately.... Veneer rolls
  25. Hey thanks guys! I'm going to be doing a straight oil finish with chrome hardware on this. The fretboard was also originally rosewood, but the inlay sucked. Now it's wenge. i'm going to try a colored finish with clear coat on my other in progress 7 string. I picked up a compressor from Canadian Tire at over half off and a gravity spray gun. I'm still learning the ropes on everything and i figured finally doing finishes other than oil would be a good idea.
