  1. That is fantastic work, a good use of some beautiful wood. Like everyone else, I'm going crazy over that super black ebony fretboard. I have some Steinberger Gearless tuners, and I think they're fantastic. They keep you in tune really well, and they're easy to fine tune, easier to restring than regular tuners, if only they were a comparable price. Obviously they are wasted if you've got a locking nut. They feed into the tuner very low, very close to the surface of the headstock, which I would think means you wouldn't need a string retainer, though I see hufschmid used one here. So in short, love Steinberger Gearless, love ebony, love that guitar. Good work!
  2. Sure, I'm no expert. I've tried many things, and I prefer fairly standard pickups with about 16k resistance. It gives me the performance I want both clean and overdriven. I don't like EMGs clean, and I don't like lower resistance pickups when cranked up. Curious about Alumitones...
  3. You've got it right, the answer is higher resistance pickups. I prefer bridge pickups about 16k, and can get plenty of harmonics out of them. Messing with your amp settings will also go a long way. Hot pickups, high gain amp and the right touch will result in harmonics that are obnoxiously loud and useful.
  4. Ok, so it sounds like there would be some differences, and it's pretty clear why there are specific bajo sexto strings. I still think it could be used as a 12 string, you know, Ee Aa Dd Gg bb ee...that sort of thing. It would definitely be strong enough to handle the string tension, I would think. Maybe the nut would be cut strangely. Still curious what the scale length is, though. I'm considering this because I want a 12 string, but I don't want to pay a ton of money, and nearly all cheap 12's are the basic dreadnaught shape, which I find boring. Just a thought...
  5. I guess I don't want a straight answer, because I know it's a South American guitar used in mariachi bands, and it's tuned lower than a standard guitar. My question is, having never seen one in person, how big is it? Could it be used with regular 12 string tuning, as a unique looking 12 string acoustic? It's strange, they're all over eBay, but a search here turned up not a single mention of it. I appreciate any information you might have.
  6. LOL Well, lemme double check what I've got going on in there. I was following a Seymour Duncan diagram, but maybe I read it wrong.
  7. Ohhhhhh..... I am a bit clumsy with the iron... I was holding it in my hands, but it did get pretty hot to the touch while I was working. I guess a heat sink and quicker work is in order.
  8. Perhaps I can get an answer here. I recently dropped some EMGs into my Nuno, then took them out later because I wasn't happy with them. That requires different pots, etc, so when I put the old stuff (Washburn passive pickups) back, I substituted a 500k push/pull volume pot that I got from Stewmac months ago for the original factory push/pull pot. I followed the Duncan wiring diagram for 2 hums, vol, 3 way switch and coil split, and finally got it all together working as it should, with one exception: the volume control only turns down the volume slightly. If you turn the knob all the way from end to the other, you hear the volume change slightly. Wha' hoppen? Did I get a bad pot, or is there some mistake in my wiring?
  9. It is a Floyd Rose bridge, and it is a locking nut, and these things look fine otherwise, nothing off track or out of place. I haven't thought to look down the neck. I bought it as a blem model, that could have been the reason it was sent back in the first place.
  10. ...that 'neck-thru', by the way, which is the main issue. Otherwise I'd try some creative shimming.
  11. I've got a musicyo Kramer Baretta FR404S/D, and say what you will, but I like it a lot. I've changed the bridge pickup to an Evo, and if I keep it, I'll redo the electronics. But here's the real problem: The high E string is too close to the edge of the fretboard. When I'm playing between the 7th fret and the nut I have to be careful not to fret out. I'd forgotten about the problem and learned to live with it until I got another guitar and I was reminded of what a problem it is. I'm guessing that the neck is slightly warped, because the locking nut looks to be in the right place, and because the new Kramers are very cheap and thought to be just thrown together. Any thoughts?
  12. I've tried most of the bridges listed and I chose the Edge. The Lo-pro might work better, but the Edge has more of a vintage (don't laugh) trusty feeling to it.
  13. Oh man, over and over again I screwed up the spelling of Ferrari, and it is right on the stinkin' inlay on the guitar! Anyway, the website's as good as done, so the curious can find out all the facts, and get a good look. The next person to find a glaring and obvious mistake of mine wins a t-shirt!
  14. Man, I feel foolish. That's right I never posted the link. I did send it to Brian (trying to weasel my way into guitar-of-the-month) so the link he posted was right. Thanks Brian! My Ferarri Jem Project Nevermind me, tell me what you think of my guitar.
  15. Just wanted to point out my website for my just finished custom project. The guitar is finished, the website has just been started. There's very little there right now, but I'll be updating as I am able with more pictures. I've got in-the-process pictures and finished product pictures. Lemme know what you think.
