Does anyone use an iPad to do any design or cad in relation to the guitars? Looking for a recommendation on a suitable app. Mainly for my commute. Lots to choose from and some ain't cheap so don't want to buy something useless.
  2. its amazing how the value of quality things increases when there is a small amount. But I can't imagine the hiscock book is all that rare. Maybe worth buying a mint condition one and putting it away for a couple decades, but it's the limited run hardback books that end up valuable. When I see the price of the scott chinery or translated Mac yasuda books now I'm astounded. On the other hand those are just pretty pictures, the hiscock book has more value to the likes of us... Still no worth several hundred dollars though. I mean seriously who would pay a thousand bucks? Craziness
  3. Only asking £40 GBP on Amazon in the UK. Might be cheaper to get it shipped from here. Don't think there is import duty on books but I could be wrong. I take it from the sudden price hike the book is no longer in print also. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/0953104907/ref=mp_s_a_1_sc_1?qid=1428059238&sr=8-1-spell&pi=AC_SX110_SY165&keywords=mevlin+hiscox
  4. Thanks Lydian. Now I've had a nights sleep and see it in the cold light of day I am in agreement with you. Might try narrowing the top section and moving the waist up a bit. It's actually very difficult to come up with something new that looks good.
  5. I'm in the design stage for my second guitar. Don't want to make a clone of any kind so I spent a few hours tonight drawing up something. It's ended up a bit Yamaha sg unintentionally but after a while it's easy to convince myself something looks good. It'll be a thruneck with maple top. Just need some honest opinions before I start making templates etc. What do you think?
  6. +1. Those cheap headless systems on fleebay are pretty much just junk my friend. Spend the extra few bucks and buy the hipshot system. You'll regret it if you don't. Don't have a pic but a friend recently recieved the hipshot headless hardtail bridge/headpiece and its a well made bit gear.
  7. Thanks pan. Yeah I made a mistake by drilling the tuner holes directly on the string path rather than the width of the tuner post out. This has created the small headstock and made the string paths from nut to tuners uneven. If it was a 3+3 design it would be fine but heyho lesson learned lol. The bolts are called joint connector bolts m6x40. You can buy them at any hardware store. Attached with m6 threaded inserts in the neck. I put the bolts in a drill and polished them before a thin coat of truoil to keep them shiney.
  8. Thanks guys. @Psiko.. Yeah I did a build thread on another forum but it's mainly for acoustics. I found myself here lots doing research so I figured I'd sign up. This guitar building stuff is more addictive than crack. @ScottR. The truoil marks or scratches far too easily for my liking but it does look good if you could keep it that way. I just don't see it being a hard enough finish for a working musician. I've already put a few dings and dents in it just playing around the house, was real easy! You know that sinking feeling that follows "F@ck!" and the split second fleeting thought that it's actually ok? We've all been there and ive got away with a few. Truoil would have marked on every one of those. I'm with you on scratchguards too. Never really been a fan but I can't take credit for the inlayed scratchplate idea. I saw it in another forum on a strat. Great idea but getting the fit really nice was a time consuming job and really it's non functioning as a guard as such, gives the tele look and makes it a bit different tho. Thanks for the warm welcome to the posting side of things
  9. Hi everyone. This is my first post here so let me start by saying thank you for all the tutorials and stuff within the site, although its my first post I am no stranger to the site. I have just completed my first build and the information and techniques I learned here was invaluable so I think it's only rite I post a few pics and say hi. Like everyone here I guess.. I'm a bit of a guitar nut and have a large collection ranging from Les Paul's to classicals but I have always wanted to get into building. Took me a few months to get tooled up and learn some new skills while I saved cash for pillar drills, bandsaws and stuff. Here's my first attempt hope you like it. Mostly made this using hand tools North American ash body with inlayed 1/4" thick figured black walnut scratchplate. Neck 5A flame maple with Macassar ebony FB, paua abalone dots and markers. Spoke wheel type truss rod. Seymore '59 zebras, 5way switch series/parallel with push pulls for phase. Tru-Oil finish 13 coats. Next is a thru neck so I'm sure I'll have some dumb questions for you guys. Feel free to pick flaws ? lol. Aside a few mistakes in the design (headstock size for example) im happy enough and it plays beautifully but will never use tru oil again. It's easy to work with but it doesn't seem as hard wearing as nitro cellulose. I do like the feeling on the neck with the oil but next one will definitely be nitro for a comparison I think. Again, hello and I hope y'all like it. Brian.
