  1. Yes. I couldn't think of another way to get the TRC thin enough, keep it compact and not weaken the headstock joint. I'm sure I stole it from someone else
  2. Abalone dot glowing on a headstock? One of the 3 on mine just caught the light... (Close up of a full guitar photo)
  3. I did discuss that with him and we settled on conventional wiring. Most of his "drive" comes from pedals rather than the amp. I'd love to give the 50s wiring a try one day though - maybe I'll rewire the Nozcaster
  4. So I've put some strings on and it's actually quite playable as it is. The pickups sound great with a nice tonal difference in the 3 switch positions and still sound good with the volume rolled off (which Dan does a lot - hence the positioning of the volume knob). I'll let it settle under tension overnight before I fine tune the nut slots and continue with the setup
  5. Truss rod cover finally glued together with a bit of CA And in place... The snug fit and magnets seems to hold it in place well. I'm rather pleased with that And yes, the 3 dots echo the dots on the body if you can remember that far back Now to string it up and fettle. Expect full glamour shots later this week
  6. Thanks. This one is actually being built for a mate of mine, so I'll have more room when it's gone Which reminds me, I really must bolt that new guitar rack on the wall...
  7. You've done a cracking job. It couldn't be any neater
  8. The coloured neck against the natural body looks wild! Excellent stuff
  9. Actually, looking at the date I started this thread, I have 5 days to finish to make it exactly a 3 year build!!! To be fair, it's mostly been done at the rate of 2 hours a week - the duration of my weekly guitar building classes
  10. Yes. I know that @Prostheta cuts his nut the way you do too, but tbh the difference is pretty negligible imho. Plus the pack of strings that Dan has given me don't have the gauges on it - it's from a bulk pack Maybe on my next full build, which will be a (my!) bass so the gaps might be more noticeable due to the thicker strings Thanks. Not far off now. I'm kinda not wanting the build to end, as I'm unlikely to start another during lockdown (I still have my campervan engine rebuild to finish!). There's really nothing left to do though apart from the final setup, so it's going to have to end soon
  11. I was going to suggest a veneer on the headstock, but thought you'd made such a good job...
  12. Why not buy a ready made neck, or even a ready made guitar? It doesn't take long to mark out the slot positions. In this case, having marked the top and bottom strings 4mm in from the fretboard edge (an advantage of keeping the nut "square" until that point), the rest of the strings worked out to exactly 7.5mm apart. Just like marking out the frets, all measured from the same datum point to avoid compounding errors
  13. All the time in the world, and still not enough to get back to this. Until today... A lot of people buy a nut ready cut. Here is how I was taught, using a bone blank Sand a pencil in half Slide it across the frets to mark the height of the "zero fret" Then sand the blank to follow the radius, at an angle matching the headstock break angle, to a mm or two above the line on the fretboard side Mark out and cut the slots. Not quite fully to depth yet - that's for final fettling Then sand it nice and smooth I've still got a few grits to go through yet, but then I can string it up and start fine-tuning the slot depths as I set it up
  14. Some good responses beat me to it. Definitely don't use pressure - have some patience and let the abrasive do the work. Dust off your paper/micromesh regularly on a cloth - monofibre cloth, or even an old towel works well. You need to get the dust out of the paper before it has time to pack/clog in there, sometimes every 3 or 4 strokes. Your paper will last longer and you'll get a better result
  15. That's obsessively neat wiring. Looking great!
  16. Ooh - if I had any reactions left today... !
  17. This would probably be my choice. Maybe choose a contrasting wood (maple?), and slim it towards the nut end to get a consistent width of "binding"
  18. Rather than a multi-scale neck, I've gone for a trans-dimensional nut
  19. I need more wood first for a full build I've got a 12 string acoustic to fix up, or maybe refinishing a tatty old Charvel Charvette (80s budget super-strat). We'll see
  20. All wired up now The nut needs a bit of fettling though
  21. All of a sudden it's gone 3 dimensional. Like a satellite view of a desert
