    Hey guys I was wondering if any of you have used rosewood for a neck,I recently bought a rosewood neck blank from LMI(props to westheman for showing me an awsome source for wood)and I plan to build a black walnut body to go with it.Im not sure what a whole walnut body will sound like but it should be intresting to find out!Anyway if any of you have used it I would much appreciate your comments.     I built a guitar that looks like a set neck but is really a bolt in.Its just like a set neck but bolted in with ferruls instead of glued,and I did extend the tennon all the way under the neck humbucker and it fir just fine with 1 in. screws.Hope this helps. Wes

    Its the fact that the headstock is so much thinner than the neck at the point where it angles that im worried about.When the slip happened it cut quite a bit off so its like a 90 degree angle cut roughly a 1/4 in.deep into the neck. Wes Ill try to get a pic up later today so you all can see what im talking about.

    So I am planning on thining the headstock down quite a bit.I just dont want it to snap off when i string it up.I should clarify that the mistake is on the back of the neck where the volute was going to be,right at the point where the angle begins.Thats why im worried.I suppose ill keep researching till i figure out what to do.Thanks for replying so quickly.     Whats wrong is that where the headstock begins to angle seems to thin(on the back of the neck where the volute was going to be.).I will be sanding down the walnut caps quite a bit.Anyway it just worries me because i dont think that the caps will do alot to support that area and that why i asked about the rods,but as ive thought about it it seems to me that removing even more wood could be bad for trhe neck.Thank you all for your input,I will keep researching till i figure out what to do.     Um a picture of the guitar would be helpful to tell you if its flamed or not.Sunbursts are genrally 2 or 3 different stains layred on top of each other,like yellow then amber.Hope this helps. Wes

    Hey all, Well I was working on a new neck the other day and while I was thinning out the headstock my router slipped a touch and now it is way to thin(like 1/2 inch).So I put a piece of 1/4 in. walnut on the front and back of it to beef it up a bit but im still afraid that it will snap if I string it up like this. So I was thinking that I could drill two 1/8 in. holes on either side of the truss rod and put some stainless roundstock or the carbon rods in the holes.The headstock is scarf jointed so drilling at an angle isnt a problem.So anybody with some input would be apprecaited.     hey i built a guitar recently that has about 3/4 of an in. side material.Its built to look and feel like a prs style set neck but is actully bolted.Its called a bolt in rather than bolt on.Mine worked really well i used neck mounting ferruls from stew-mac and it worked out great.I hope that helps a little.     thanks for the replys, i think ill try a piece of all thread and make my own rod that way i can make it as thin as i want and hopefully still be effective. Wes

    Thank you both for replying so quickly.I think ill have a look at allied lutherie and lmi's truss rods and see if i can make one myself i have access to tig welders and most everything at my work.As far as the fretboard im to paranoid to slot it myself so i was hoping to find someone that could make one cheaper than the one i found before.It looks like i may have to try after all.Im up for a new challenge!

    I would have to agree with goat and say that all your trying to do is block noise from everywere but the front of the pup i.e. where the strings are.I had a crappy strat copy that i shielded with aluminum tape and it sounded way better.(And I lived in a house with all flourescent lighting.)But really If you like the sound now why change it?     Hi im wes ive been around for awhile but havnt posted much.However I have learned a great deal from all of you and come to respect many of your thoughts.In any case to my topic. I was wondering your opinions on different truss rods.I know that Dual action rods work well because all ive used are the stew-mac hot rods but the necks ive made are not thin enough for my taste. I would like to try say a martin style single action but wonder about stability as the newest neck im making is to be a baritone.Also I was wonderign if anyone her knows Hwere to get A 28.5 in. fretboard.The only place ive found was spendy like over 50$ and i cant even remember the name of the place.Any way thanks in advance for the help.     Ive never used that kind of poly before but I know that the minwax stuff works rather well(at least for me). Please remember that whenever your spraying anything to use a resperator or at the very least a VERY snug dust mask.Some of that stuff can make you really sick and even kill you. Wes

    All right my problem is that I had 2 pieces of 2x6 walnut and 2 pieces of 2x8 mohogany,I glued everything up and relized that the walnut wasnt wide enough sooo I routed a channel in the middle of the walnut and put a 1 inch strip of mohoany down it but now it has tiny little crack between the pieces of wood.Ive read about using epoxy but I am not sure if how to make it blend w/the rest of the wood.The finish I want is a black burst going into the natrul(sp?)look of the wood so some of it will be covered.I just dont want it to look like crap.The cracks are between about1/64th and 1/16th wide.Sorry no pics I have no batteries for my digicam.     hey thanks for the link crafty thats much cheaper and sounds like it works about the same.I think ill look into it.So if its just a bunch of little caps and a rotary switch how hard would it be to build do you think. thanks for the replys. Im building a walnut/mohogany guitar w/humbuckers and im looking for the most tonal possibilties i can get. BTW Im with you lovecraft I use my tone all the time.I was thinking of using the switch also. thanks Wes

    Hey,I was reading my newest guitar world yesterday and came by an ad for the stellar tone tone styler.Have any of you heard of it?It seems like a cool idea but is quite expensive.I read up on it on the website and it sounds like a rotary switch w/a bunch of different caps wired to it.So im wondering If you guys think its possible to build one that functions the same way as theirs or if its even worth the time for something like that? thanks Wes heres the websitestellartone

    Hey everyone I was wondering if I could get your opinions on some good humbuckers.Im building a guitar with mohogany/walnut and im looking for some pups that have a warmer sounding clean tone and a real crunchy overdriven sound.Not to bass heavy and not to bright.Your opinions are greatly welcomed.     My drill press is to small for the 5" to reach the center of the wood.I think if I had a larger one it would reach. Its either that or I figure out how to build the mount for my router to thickness rout.Thanks

    no not a drum sander but a flat circular sander like you use in a normal drill for sanding cars. and thanks for reading this

    I agree stewmacs is pretty good.I used there wire on an in progress guitar and its been great so far.

    Hey does anyone here know where to get a circular sander that mounts to a drillpress chuck thats over 5"? I have one thats 5" but need one bigger to do the job.Any help or ideas would be great.
