  1. Hmm! I will have to try that! Heard of people doing a similar thing with a belt sander.
  2. Beautiful stuff! My Ovangkol experience was a disaster, but its all part of the learning process! Seriously, the neck was a mess I will salvage it though, probably make it part of a laminate neck.
  3. That has a lovely luminense to it! Am I using the right word? Reminds me of morning sunlight hitting an outdoor swimming pool.
  4. I can't stop buying wood! Its my main excitement each pay day....mmmm grain!!! Ha ha!
  5. It really is an unbelievable guitar....'not quite a Tele' indeed. Has your personal stamp all over it! Which is I guess what this is all about right?
  6. Im definitely going to be experimenting with different bits, have you ever tried using a router bit for the neck radius/contour? As far as pickup/control panel routing goes Im doing quite well now I think, neck pockets too....although I have learnt the magic of tape the hard way!
  7. I've not had totally smooth results in that area when it comes to using a router (including my test run on a walnut headstock....by god that was chippy! to such an extent that a massive chunk of wood went flying) a big problem has been the neck pocket area of the neck; the curve at the end has been an issue for me when using a router.
  8. Did you fill the Wenge or use any finish on it?
  9. Really beautiful work! That’s a stunning guitar so I guess with any end grain maybe use a spindle sander? Or use a saw? I really should invest in some good quality bits, mine are all cheap.
  10. Thanks for reply! I do occasionally get a bit of tearout and I heard Wenge is quite bad for that. I have a nice piece of it and I’m slightly nervous about using it, given the horror stories. I suppose this happens more at the end of the Wood now I think about it. Anyway, suppose I should just bite my lip and go at it with the router! Definitely using the spindle for the headstock on my next build though.
  11. Ok so I recently purchased a spindle sander and I’m loving it! I have an idea with it, would love to hear your thoughts. How about using it to shape the neck? I don’t just mean the contour at the back of the neck, but the actual finished basic outline? That way I would have to worry a lot less about any tear out etc. Maybe a good idea for woods like Wenge. Would run some thin but heavy duty tape down the side of the neck template, maybe mark it with a pen and run the sander across it so that it is plush. Thoughts?
  12. Did a quick fit up For some reason the frets look slanted, optical illusion though. This is better Hard to capture the colour through the lighting in this house, it’s not as brown as it appears here.
  13. Thanks! Yeah I’ve had it lying around for about a year now....I originally had enough of it for a droptop, but it got chewed in to pieces in the planer Always wanted to put it to good use.
  14. So I have finished most of the body now; need to revarnish some of the areas around the side where I didn’t notice run out from the wood filler and also will be varnishing the walnut back soon. Glued the neck in. Also been working on a scratch plate for this build that I have made from Golden Phoebe wood. I will be clearing all the gunk from the cavities ofcourse...(that sounds so wrong )
  15. So far so good! That neck looks like a vintage amber rather than the result of smoking, but I could be wrong.
  16. Its interesting to watch this video - My ash has been both light and easy to work with, And I doubt its Swamp Ash because it was so cheap. Maybe I got lucky?
  17. Well spotted! And thanks. It’s not all cut to shape yet. So yes, quite long at the moment. However I’m keeping part of the side wood on the pocket to allow for more surface area for glue....I have decided on a set neck of sorts (is it still classed as a set neck without a tenon?)
  18. Ash smells like onion bhajis whilst being drilled. Anyway, so far, so good. Have to say, this wood is lovely to work with.
  19. If its lightweight too then I would definitely say Paulownia. I have some that looks pretty much the same and its insanely light.
  20. Well I’m saying lightweight...but it’s just light in comparison to my other build. It’s going to be about 5.5 pounds? The ash is pretty light, so I didn’t have to do any chambering
  21. Cheers Yeah, I thought it matched with the back of the neck and gave it that extra bit of stability for when I install the bolts.
  22. Thanks! It’s a stain. I did the normal thing of using a dark stain and sanding back to reveal the figuring. When I did it to the back of the neck I thought it looked cool with the brown tint so paired it with the walnut back. Here is the back anyway.
  23. Been working on another guitar, after a couple of false starts (that Padauk build has come apart at the seams where I joined it!). Anyway, got some nice flamed maple that I have been wanting to do something with. Paired it with an olive wood board, some ash and walnut and this is the result so far. Very happy with the neck fit! Snug but without having to hammer it within inch of its life! It’s only 36mm thick, hopefully it stays in one piece
  24. Coincidentally, that transition looks very much how my current build ended up. Not sure how it got there, but I like the convex look.
