  1. Just wondering if anyone has every mounted a jigsaw to a table to create a half arsed poor mans bandsaw? I'll probably try it with one of 2 freebie jigsaws I got given before I try to do it with my Bosch.
  2. cheers all... I decided to make a jig thing for my router... created some kind of double rail with a door frame segment... works a treat.
  3. Hey guys, I've recieved my shipment of wood from my local timber merchants. Got some Sapele for the body wings and maple for the neck and fretboard. I had to cut the sapele in half (because the clowns didn't do what I said) to make the wings. The neck planks have been cut to the right length, width and roughly thickness... however I've noticed they haven't been cut the straightest possible way, and so it'll all need flattening out. Right what is the quickest way of getting it all level, I've got a belt sander and if needed I'll buy an electric planer. Also while I'm at it, I'm planning on using Createx AutoAir colours to spray the guitar... would it be safe to use Behlen Qualalaq or stringed instrument nitro as a clear... or shall I risk using Lechler Acrifan acrylic clear? Cheers
  4. Balsa IIRC is actually classed as a hardwood and yet Pine is a softwood... anyway, I see no problem with it
  5. Stains + nitro lacquer for see-thru colours, lol Car paints such as Auto Air or air brush paints such as createx (the make the auto-airs aswell), and lacquer for solids (an acrylic lacquer is probably the best to go on these, though if heard of people using DEFT nitro, which probably meand you could use behlen nitro). Though ideally you'll want to apply a polyurathene coat for solids because its more durable, in the long run... Auto air and createx are cheap but good paints... Thats my random input into the forum, for today.
  6. Good to hear Halfords do do some high grits... I found an online shop (in my little trails on the web, doing some background research for when I start making guitars), www.axminster.co.uk They do up to 2500grit... Im in possession of some Micro-Mesh... think I've got 12000grit and 18000grit (I think). Dunno where I found it though, crazy grit numbers, probably only good for polishing.
  7. I use D'addario EXLS .010s (stainless steel... they last longer than NPS strings, dont rust in the same way... and I'll be damned if anyone can tell the difference in tone between stainless steel and NPS). I always tune to DGCFAD (never higher than that, I think higher tunings sound a bit limp) and have no problems with tension, so this gauge is happy with EADGBE, or DGCFAD. But if you want to go lower than DGCFAD, I'd suggest you move onto .011s or .012s.
  8. Hello y'all. I'm new here so I don't know if this has been asked before, and I generally can't be arsed to do a snoop. I'm thinking about building a guitar soon and so I've been thinking about finishes. I can get Behlin stains and lacquers from their site, but they don't do any solid colours, so I've been thinking (seeing as many people used to use car sprays... probably still do) about possibly using car sprays to get a solid colour. But I'm skeptical about it, as it'll probably come out rubbish (with loads of blobs and the like). How would I go about getting a good solid colour finish? what should I use for base coating, etc. Cheers for your time.
