  1. Awesome, thanks! That's what I thought but I've made so many mistakes I appreciate the confirmation! Learning a lot and having fun though so it's all good.
  2. Hi guys, About done with my first finish project. I used a satin poly and am wondering do I need to polish or buff it at all if I am satisfied with the look? Thanks for the help!
  3. Thanks for the help. Yeah I didn't explain myself well. I did not intend for the lighter color around the burn at all. Well at least I learned something! I am going to try and sand back the head stock and front of the body. Problem is I burned the edges with a heat gun too for a burn fade look. I don't want to do that again with the back and sides done so I will get some more stain and try and sand back blend it.
  4. Well after countless test runs without issue I finally burned and stained my Explorer. Everything looked great until I applied my Danish oil blend. I am assuming the heat from the wood burning sealed the wood as the oil didn’t penetrate and I didn’t sand well enough prior to oil. I must have generated more heat than I did on any of my practice runs? I am learning a lot on this project! Any recommendations on how to fix? I have another design on the body that’s even worse. I don’t think I have a choice but to let the oil dry, sand everything back and start over hoping enough of the burned wood design stays without the surrounding wood….am I on the right track? Thanks!
  5. Appreciate all the help and sharing of knowledge! Thanks everyone
  6. Sounds like with ample dry time (no problem) I shouldn't have to worry about a sealer. I am really liking the results from the danish oil so I think that's the direction I'm headed. Thanks again!
  7. I appreciate the feedback guys, thank you!
  8. I guess I am wondering if I should apply a layer of sanding sealer on top of the dyed danish oil?
  9. In experimenting with dying Danish Oil last night I wound up with a color I really like that I'd like to move forward with. Given that I added dye to the Danish Oil do I need to treat it at all to lock in the color before I move forward with lacquer or poly? I want to make sure to retain the color for sure. I really like the look and would like to preserve it as much as possible. Thanks!
  10. Yeah it probably does! Can't wait
  11. That's really good to know, thank you. Am I on the right track with the dark grain fill for a nice contrast? I appreciate your help.
  12. Hello everyone! I have been lurking for a while learning a lot but this is my first post I am working on finishing an Explorer shaped guitar. It's currently unfinished mahogany, which I took a pic and attached. I am still trying to finalize my finish plan and was thinking of grain filling with brown or black grain and sanding back to contrast the wood. I would like to also stain part of the guitar and leave part natural and top coat the entire top. Am I on the right track here? My plan was to stain, grain fill, top coat...with lots of sanding in between. Thanks!
