  1. Has anyone tried Diesel "Texas Style" pickups? They are Korean made Alnico strat pickups and are just as cheap as mighty mites... Just wanted to know if anyone has bought them and what they thought of them.
  2. Just wondering if anyone knows of where I can buy copper foil or sheets for shielding my guitar. I can't find anything online for Australia. I know some people use aluminum duct tape for shielding but I was thinking of doing as good of a job as possible *but still for cheap!!
  3. Oops ok here it goes. Neck and mid in series and/or neck and bridge in series. Neck and bridge in parallel.
  4. I can find a 3 way (4pole) rotary switch locally and wanted to combine it with my stock 5 way strat switch. How would the wiring differ from this?? (http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/schematics/lp_custom_wiring_schematic.pdf)
  5. Pot 16mm 250 kOhm SG/Lin ( 200mW 200VDC Spline 18 Teeth Pot 16mm 250 kOhm SG/Log (A) 100mW 150VDC Spline 18 Teeth This the description of the pots I could buy from Dick Smith (An aussie store) I thought guitar wiring was AC not DC?! Am I just confusing myself? Can someone verify if the above pots would work fin for tone/vol on a strat.
  6. Don't suppose you drew up a schematic for SSS strat?? I had seen the schematic for a blender at http://electron.tailfeatherz.com/c21.html and had thought that you could use a dual gang pot and still have a master tone control. The only problem is that it seemed as though you would get 100 series and 0 parallel at one end and the opposite at the other with 50% of each in the middle. That wouldn't be good with a strat cause you would still want the traditional single pickup sound too. However it sounds as though this could be done with the Pan pot. I just don't want to jump into that without a schematic since this is the first time I will be wiring a strat!
  7. http://electron.tailfeatherz.com/c21.html Has anyone done this mod? Can you let me know how it worked out? Any links or suggestions for other Blender type mods would be appreciated! Thanks
  8. Would mini tone and vol pots add enough room to make the difference? I am wiring a pickguard from scratch.
  9. But does it sound good? That was more what I wanted to hear about...
  10. Just wanted to know if anyone has tried this out and what they thought of it.
  11. http://cgi.ebay.ca/Vintage-Yamaha-Standard...1QQcmdZViewItem "If you win it you will get good lucky" buahahahaha I can't believe that they are making copies of copies now. LOL. There are "Grecos" for sale on his ebay store too. Great price. Too bad shipping is 185 GBP (which is what, over 300USD?)
  12. http://cgi.ebay.com/3-Piece-Strat-Pickup-C...0QQcmdZViewItem Here are some gold single coil covers. They look ok in the picture but I think that they would be plastic with a gold type paint so don't know if they would stay gold or not. Let me know if you get something like this. I was curious about how they look in real life!
  13. www.ormsbyguitars.com Standard Wiring Kit - "Strat style" - Includes 5-way lever switch, jack, 3x 250K pots, 1x .050mf cap and wire kit $45.00 (+12 for shipping) Oops, maybe the guy in HK wasn't so overpriced after all in comparison to Aus! Ah well, he still lied to me with his claims that he gets charged $35 per 300g for shipping. I think I will just buy a mighty mite loaded pickguard and take out the pickups and get a nicer colour pickguard too (and wait forever for it to get shipped here from the US).
  14. Sorry, the key piece of info I forgot to mention is that I live in Australia currently. I figured someone would know of a store that I could just walk into to get potentiometers. It is a fairly common mass produced item that shouldn't need to be purchased online. I have looked at Dick Smiths and a few others but they don't have the proper shaft size for the controls. Or alternatively the tips for soldering on to don't have rings.
  15. I was going to place an order with a store based out of Hong Kong. Their prices were fairly good but then they claimed that shipping would cost 25 USD when they quoted $6 on individual items. (These are tone pots and volume pots and a jackplate!) I asked why and the guy wrote some big story about how they are charged 35USD for the first 300g of shipping. I wrote back about how he was such a wonderful altruistic individual for losing money on all of his transactions. Volume pots and tone pots aren't expensive components. They should be well under 5USD. Anyone know of a decent honest store online that I could order from?
  16. Um, what's the deal with the cryogenically treated pickups? What are they defining as "cryogenics". (ie. what temp, how long etc)... I know that the principle of supercooling electronics works but that was for heat generating devices like computers. It just sounds like marketing BS but I may experiment myself I can find out what temps and times they are talking about. Have the equipment to measure the pickups output so can consider it a mythbuster like trial.
  17. I dont think it means either really... You have 'log taper' pots and 'linear taper' pots, the log/linear describes the taper of the pot if that makes sense. I *think* an "audio taper pot" is a logarithmic one It's ok, the store has pics of the pots and there were some designated A500K (Volume I assume) and B250K (Tone). (I read the other thread where this was mentioned by you I think). So I think I have it sorted out. Just have to order this stuff.
  18. I was looking at replacing the pots in my strat. However the stores online I look at just specify 500 or 250k values and say "audio taper pot". Does this mean that a 500k pot can be used as a volume pot or a tone pot depending on how you wire it? From what I understand the normal strat setup uses a 500k pot for volume and 250k pots for the tone controls. My question is: does the pot have to be specified as a volume pot when I am looking online or will any 500k audio pot do?????
  19. Hello, I figured I would introduce myself. I am a living in but may be moving to the in a few years. I have been playing guitar very inconsistently for about 15 years. I wish I had more time and discipline to practice! I have owned strats and still own one and a Les Paul. I am currently building a partscaster as follows: -reverse headstock rosewood MM neck -chinese strat copy (for the body) -custom shop '54 pickups -have kluson style tuners but looking for tremolo, jack and plate in gold -Also need a new pickguard and pots! -going to put it together in a few months on my break and may possibly refinish it at that time * Considering putting in an aftermarket mid boost circuit as well. BTW, I recently bought a pathfinder 15r and highly recommend it as a small practice amp. (Er, except for the fact that the reverb seems messed up on mine). However once it is fixed it should be good. It has great tone for a SS. Gear is really expensive here in Aus!
  20. I wanted to find out about fret dressing and discovered the following tutorials were dead: Fret Level and Crown: Author Steven Kersting Photographic tutorial on fret leveling and crowning Refretting a complete neck: Author Steven Kersting Photographic tutorial on refretting a complete neck I couldn't see a link or area for reporting dead links.... Did I miss it?
  21. I have seen some Chinese strat copies with really nice looking natural finishes that are cheap. However someone told me they use Chinese alder which doesn't have a grain as visible as the American alder. Would the 2 Alders be pretty similar in tone? Just wondering since I could buy one of these guitars for the same price as a Chinese alder body replacement and much cheaper than an American strat body. I could even reuse some of the parts or just sell them off cheap. Any thoughts? This is my first strat project. Someone suggested building a strat from parts first before making a body and neck from scratch which I will try later. I face the delemma of not wanting to spend too much for the strat parts without having to compromise the tone!
  22. I think it may be more than a 1 mm difference but I couldn't verify this. Lots of misinformation out there so I shouldn't add to it!
  23. I am attempting to build a nice partscaster on an el cheapo budget. I bought a chinese alder strat copy, a Mighty Mite neck and recently got a decent price on some custom shop 54 american pickups. However I am reading that the American pickups are spaced slightly differently according to the US spacing. There are a few threads discussing Humbuckers but what about strat pickups??? The current pickups are 50mm (2") and apparently F-spacing (used on US strats) is 51mm? I was told that I should replace the tremolo with a US one to get the correct spacing for my US pickups. However other people say this is BS. I want to replace the tremolo but think that the screw spacing will be different if I get a US spaced one as opposed to a MM replacement and don't want to bother with the extra work. ** So the question is will having a 2" bridge with US spaced single coil pickups mess up the tone I should get from the pickups or will it not be noticed?
