  1. First of all, welcome to the forum David! :D That sounds a lot like the project I'm working on (a PRS style guitar), but I haven't had time to work on it for ages. I hope it all goes well for you, and we would love to see pictures! I think this topic belongs in the Works in Progress category though. Good luck!

  2. Pariah, could you explain a little more what you mean about the Kinkead book? I have heard that the Cumpiano's book is a little outdated, but the Kinkead book is pretty new. What do you mean there is misinformation and calculation errors? Any advice would be appreciated. I am trying to learn as much about acoustics as possible, and Kinkead's book is all I have to go on so far (and the OLF).

  3. Looks good, congrats! If you want to change it, that is up to you. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by putting MOP dots around it, but it might be cool. I personally think it would look good with a thin darker accent around the inner and outer edges to make it contrast with the top more (either purfling or a darker wood). Looks good how it is now though too, and once you put some finish on there it will look even better. :D

  4. If you don't have any building experience and don't own ANY tools, then it might be kind of difficult to make a guitar. But, it can definitely be done. :D There are tons of people who have made very nice first guitars without any experience. I actually got interested in building guitars a few years ago when I stumbled on to this site. I didn't have much woodworking experience, didn't know too much about how guitars were made, and didn't have much money to buy parts or tools. I decided that I really wanted to build a guitar and do it for cheap. I planned on buying the cheapest parts available and use minimal tools. I was going to use an old jigsaw to cut out the body and use a chisel for the cavities.

Once I started learning more about building and actually practicing with scrap wood though I figured it would be best to invest in certain tools. I ended up getting a router (you definitely need one of those I think if you want it to be easy and accurate), a bandsaw, a small drill press, and some other tools. Over the last two years I've spent about $500 on tools and could easily spend twice that on more tools. If you have money to spend, then you should invest in certain tools. But if you are patient, you can get by without spending money on certain tools (bandsaw, router)....or you could borrow tools from people.

As for the guitar parts, that is up to you. You can spend a lot of money on great wood and parts, or you can build a cheaper (slightly lower quality guitar) guitar. Some people spend well over $1500 to build a guitar, but you can make one for less than $500. I'm currently working on my second project and it will probably end up being around $500 or so for the wood and parts. THe last project I did was a bass, and here are some pricing specs that might help give you an estimate of what to expect if you want to do a cheap project:

    alder body blank- $50

premade neck (with tuners) bought on ebay- $40

    EMG select pickups- $45

    wiring kit- $25

    knobs/shielding/neck plate/etc $40

    TOTAL= approximately $200

I went as cheap as I could and the quality wasn't that great, but you can see that it is possible to make a guitar for fairly cheap. As you progress you can spend more to make better guitars. For my current project I've spent almost $200 on just the wood, and I would have preferred to spend more. The total will probably be around $500 and I keep getting tools as I go along.

So....sorry this is kind of long, and I'm not sure if it helps you much. Basically I am just saying that you CAN build a guitar for fairly cheap. If you are serious and have the money though I recommend good tools. You have us here at the forum for help, so feel free to ask about where to do your parts/wood shopping and how to build guitars. Good luck with your project! :D

  5. Wow, that is really fantastic work! :D The front of the guitar is kind of graphic, but it is very detailed and expertly done. I personally prefer the back, but the whole guitar is awesome! I checked out your website and the other work is all great too. I especially liked the progress pictures to see how painted this step by step. Again, great work!

  6. Yeah, something does seem weird here. Fookgub has made some pretty cool guitars before, so I'm sure he knows how to make some sawdust. And the writing does seem different. If it is a family member logging in, maybe I can understand...but can accounts really get hacked here? :D What happened to the real fookgub?

  7. I know what you mean about your guitars not getting finished. I have my current PRS style build sitting in the garage. The neck is mostly finished. All I really have to do with the body is the pickup cavities, drilling, carve, and paint. It doesn't seem like much, but I've been too busy with trying to do this IM stuff that I haven't had time to work on guitars lately. There are actually quite a few members at WA that are college students, so my situation is not that unique I guess. Wish me luck!

  8. It comes down to traffic and page rank. Google (and other places) give each website a page rank and smaller forums (I have one too) rarely get hit because your page rank is really low. This site has a higher page rank therefore it gets more attention from the bots. After all, the same bots that Google uses to determine page validity are the same bots spammers use to flood forums and blogs with their links. This would explain how you use the same methods to activate users and why you don’t get spammed much.

I'm not an expert on how spambots work, but I'm not sure this is the case here. Like Neil said, the Page Rank for PG really isn't that high. Here is just a quick comparison to other sites:

    TalkBass.com- Page Rank -5 , Alexa rating- 24,586

    Ultimate-Guitar Page Rank- 5 , Alexa rating- 289

Project Guitar Page Rank- 1 , Alexa rating- 107,923

So....saying that PG is targeted for spam because it is popular doesn't seem to be the case. Out of the possible 10 PR scores available, PG has a 1 while these other two sites have a 5. Also they get MUCH more traffic (especially UG) than PG ever gets. I love this forum and use it more than any other, but it is definitely not the busiest. You can check the forum at the end of the day and read all the fresh posts fairly quickly. Try doing that in the main bass section of TalkBass! There are new posts every few minutes.

Anyway, both TalkBass and Ultimate Guitar get a LOT more attention than PG and they don't have the spam problems as much. I'm not sure why this site is targeted so much, but I don't think the PR has much to do with it. Not really sure how to stop spammers from being interested in this site, but I think some change to the registration process should help with the problem. Like other people mentioned...it is embarrassing to come to this site and see the headlines about free porn or something. I hope we can figure out some way to fix this problem. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
