  1. Hi, can someone give some song examples of THE P-90 sound? Is it the Black Crowes 'Twice as Hard' intro? Is it the intro to 'Gimme Shelter'? I'm just wondering what the heck these sound like. thanks!
  2. Looks great, so you use string trees? Do you have any finished pics?
  3. I know Setch, check out the 6:07 mark here http://youtube.com/watch?v=JkPJ579M_gU. I dunno though, if I'm paying that much, I'd like and expect a tighter fit, voodoo or not
  4. Do most of you round the end of the tenon or square off the end of the pocket ie. with a chisel? I'd guess that most round off the end of the neck because your router already makes a rounded pocket. In that case, what is the most accurate way of doing it? I've just been using a rasp etc. and am having trouble making an exact fit. Is there some way to do some kind of reverse template from the pocket or?? Thanks!
  5. Nitefly, even though I'm a big Alex fan, that WAS funny! Crafty, that was maybe 3-4 guitars out of the almost 100 he's made. Check these out, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder but if you like wood, and natural beauty, you can't deny these: http://www.zacharyguitars.com/290899_07.JPG http://www.zacharyguitars.com/120603_01.JPG http://www.zacharyguitars.com/280901_02.JPG http://www.zacharyguitars.com/160406_30.JPG http://www.zacharyguitars.com/290506_20.JPG I think that if he was in this to make money, he'd instead have a slick website and wouldn't turn down people who want to buy something from him. He also only just raised the price recently. for the last few years you could buy one for under 2K, and at one guitar a month, $1200-1500 profit aint much to live on. Hey, to each his own, I'm just extremely impressed with this guy's passion and willingness to do what he feels is right, regardless of if he could make $$ from it. Do I think he can be a bit of a Dick at first? Sure. Check the site out a bit, then make your decision. I used to think he was just as whacked as alot of you do, he's now my favourite luthier around. I also still say no one has as many straight 10's on Harmony Central as Zachary Guitars.
  6. Not that this even needs to be said but if/when you get the building bug, Melvyn Hiscocks book is one of the bibles!
  7. Ya, many ways to skin a cat! I like cutting my neck taper then gluing my slotted but not radiused fretboard on. That way I can flip it upside down and use the neck as a template of sorts with my router (with follower bit). Then radiusing.
  8. 2 1/4" in total. You're right about the edge, it's 2". You'd probably be best off using 1 3/4" thick Mahogany with a 1/2" maple cap.
  9. Dude... no offence but you're exactly who WOULDN'T want a Zach guitar, nothing wrong with that. I don't know of any other guitar builder who has higher ratings on Harmony Central than Alex. Ya, I'm one of those who agree with what he's doing and the reasons behind why he does it that way. As was mentioned before, alot of what he does is just common sense and logic. Oh and the two guitars you are talking about don't just LOOK like they were built from Home Depot scraps or rescued from a dumpster, they WERE!
  10. My shop is in the basement too and I also use the 'carpeted stairs' method. My wife is finally getting used to the sawdust in the dirty clothes hamper too! Don't restaraunts use sawdust for burger filler? I bet some sugar maple would be goood...
  11. Sometimes it's better spending the $30 on a specialized tool instead of say, $10 plus 2 hours of modification. Even if you aren't in the business of building guitars, even if you have tons of spare time, your time alone is still worth something. On the other hand, even if it winds up costing you the 2 hours of work, spending actual less $$ on something and modifying it yourself is a pretty good feeling. Kind of like cheating the system.
  12. NOPE! Much cooler than that !!METAL MATT!! Good luck Matt, I've been lurking here a couple of years and just joined. You really seem dedicated and passionate about your stuff - not afraid about what other people think or anything. Very cool dude.
