  1. WOW, thanks, that really helps. I'll definitely start looking into that. THe electronics were the part that I was really worrying about. I have a friend that will help me with the woodwork, so I wasn't concerned about that. about your basses- will this pickup work for an electric upright? THat's the other project I'm planning out, but not as seriously as this one. -Nathan
  2. I can't seem to view your sketches, can you e-mail them to me? I've been drawing up a few, but haven't really settled on anything. I am seriously considering this idea, though- For the upper "horns", i think it would be really cool if they didn't actually connect with the body, it would give it even more of a silouhette look if only the bottom connects. It sounds strange, but it's hard to describe. I'll try to get a picture up soon.
  3. I'm mostly listening to jazz and classical right now, (that's what I'm studying), but I have a huge collection of music, indian music, classical, blues, rock, acoustic, lots of music from south america, mexico, the carribean, funk, country. I've listened to some metal but haven't delved into it as much as I should. I do appreciate the creativity, though. Some of the stuff I've heard has had really crazy time signatures and is WAY fast. I can definitely respect that, even if I don't listen to it as much. I used to play Latin Folk- I can sing like a mariachi BEFORE beer. RIght now I'm working on playing underneath spoken word stuff with a vocalist. I'm doing something similar to charlie hunter (soloing in the bass while keeping the chords going), but all acoustic. I like to play (and listen to) all kinds of stuff. THe only music I can't really get into is techno, but I have heard some interesting stuff integrated into it. Straight techno is a little dry, though. All I can say is, keep your mind (and your ears) open.
  4. Well, I'll meet with him in the next week or so to talk about what he wants to learn. I suppose i should judge based on that. Thanks!!!
  5. I've actually been thinking of a few projects this summer, and I thought of this body as a design to use. I think it would be really awesome in an 8-string a la Novax, but I am nowhere near the capability to build a fanned fret neck or buy one for $1000. I am planning out a frameworks build and i think i might shape the sides to this profile. If you want a custom neck, the warmoth baritone seems cool. I'm a 7 stringer, so I would like the baritone 7, which, with the extra frets, would be a really wide range of notes. Best of Luck!!!
  6. Hello everyone, I'm planning out a guitar similar to frameworks guitars and right now I'm trying to figure out how I can do the electronics. It will be a Nylon 7 string. What do you recommend is the best way to go about it? I don't know much about piezos, so if anyone knows a place to start reading about them, I would be grateful. This is another thread where I was asking about the construction, it might help: http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=14990 This is the frameworks site: http://www.frameworks-guitars.com/ Thanks!!!
  7. I think bc rich guitars are pretty decent for the money, I haven't played many of them though. I know this is a little off subject, but it reminds me of a funny story: When i was about 16, my mom was trying to convince me to play in the church band. I hated church, so I told her that the only way I would do it is if she bought me the acrylic red warlock and let me play it on stage. She declined and let the subject go. PS- I'm still tempted to buy a 7 string warlock and bring it to a jazz gig.
  8. I'll admit, I'm a sucker for that guitar, too. Dano's do seem to be made cheap, but I love my mod 7. There is something special about the sound. Moving the bridge looks like it will work, but why not try this: Make a baritone guitar out of it, that way, going up to 31 frets wouldn't be too high, and you would have more lower range. It looks kind of funny without a long neck. If you really want be adventurous, make it fretless. Oh yeah!!! Good Luck!!!
  9. Hello all, I'm an intermediate player studying classical and jazz guitar, and I will be teaching a beginner in the summer. I was wondering about the things I should start with. I'm thinking of doing it in an order similar to this: Segment 1: Open Major Chords Segment 2: Open Minor Chords Segment 3: Blues I-IV-IV Segment 4: Major Scale Positions Segment 5: Minor Scale Positions I'll adapt stuff according to his progress, as well as his interests. Am I missing anything?
  10. tirapop, Those Frameworks guitars start at $1800, I got the price list from the dealer today. The 7 string model is $2500 without midi!!! Personally, i think that is too much money for that guitar, building one would be way cheaper. I haven't done fret work yet, so that's what I'm afraid of. I decided on steel string only because I could get a neck easier, and the pickup system seemed to be less complex. ideally, i'd rather do a nylon, so Maybe I should just face my fear Someone I talked to today mentioned to me that I should try doing the sides out of wood, so i might try that instead. I'm coming up with a different design for the sides, though. As soon as i decide the one I want to do, I'll post a pic. Can you tell me how to locate the appropriate Piezo? For some reason I thought they were hard to come by.. Am I not looking in the right places? The tieblock looks easy, but I would change one thing about their tuner arrangement. Rather than route out two different cavities, I think I would route one large one that covered that whole area. It seems like there isn't enough room to get the strings in with my fat fingers About the truss rod, In a 7 or 8 string model, can you still get away without having one?
  11. A friend of mine just purchased the Lexicon Omega Desktop Recording System and is very happy with it. He has the version with Cubase SE, which he really likes. I've heard some things he has recorded and it is nice. In fact, I made a documentary and used some of the music we made together. I have an M-audio Radium 49 midi keyboard which is really cool, right now I'm using it with garageband until I get some better software. I have a Fostex Mr-8, which gives a good sound, but I haven't used it for a while. I'm selling it in the classified area if anyone is interested. http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=15090 Also, I know this is mainly about recording gear, but I have an AKG dynamic that I have done some gigs and recording with, it sounds good and was a nice price ($99), I'm not sure of the model, though. I have only tried it with vocals.
  12. Oh, I forgot to add that I am interested in trades. Stuff I'm interested in: 5 or 6 string bass, 7 string guitars/ pickups, other stuff, too. If you have something you need to clear out, don't be afraid to ask!!!
  13. Hey everyone, I have two things I'm trying to clear out. My first is an ovation celebrity, I have it on ebay here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...ssPageName=WDVW I've moved on to 7 string, so I have no need for this anymore. If you have any questions, e-mail me. ALso, if the auction ends and someone gives me a good offer, I'll take it. I have a few more pics at home that I can send if someone needs them. The second is something I regret I have to get rid of, but money (and space) is tight. It's a Fostex MR-8 digital multitracker. It's in great condition, hasn't been used much. I don't have the original box, but I should be able to find the manual. They go for $300 new, I'll probably let it go for about $220. E-mail me or post here if you have questions. I haven't posted it on ebay yet. To e-mail me, click on my name and send one.
  14. OK, so I'm planning out this project and I'm just wondering a few things: If I want to finish this faster, I was thinking of buying a neck-through neck and modifying it into being the guitar. I''ve decided, for now, I will start with a steel string 7 string guitar, so that I can use a regular magnetic pickup with a volume knob. Later, I will focus on a nylon string guitar and start messing with piezos. So here's a few questions: WHere is a good place to get a neck-through 7 string neck from? I've looked at the one from carvin, but can't seem to find anything else. I still want to go with the reverse design, so I am wondering what I should do about the headstock. What kind of bridge would be good to use? My first thought was a tune-o-matic, maybe I would have to sink it into the wood to get it low enough? My other thought was to make a simple version of the type of bridge that an archtop guitar usually has, with a wooden base and a bone saddle, but I would like to be able to change the action/intonation quickly. For tuners, I think I'll just get 7 locking ones from warmoth (they are the only place I know where I can get any number I want, rather than buy in sets). If I could get those steinberg ones in a set of 7, that would be awesome, though. For the piping, what kind of place should I go to in order to get it shaped into the size I need? Also, does anyone know if there is a lightweight pipe that would be most suitable for this type of project? Also, Is there anything I can coat it in to make it softer? I was looking at these pictures while coming up with these ideas- http://www.frameworks-guitars.com/look.html If you have any suggestions/ warnings, I'd be glad to hear them. I'm planning to start this in the summer, so I have a lot of time to plan. As soon as I come up with some drawings, I'll post them. -Nathan
  15. Wow, you guys are really inspiring me, Thanks. I'm not going to try midi right now, I don't think I really need it in a guitar. As for the yamaha guitar, I actually don't like their frame as much as the frameworks ones. I also like the fact that they are steel. I think the yamaha ones are plastic. Ideally, I would want a way to plug headphones directly into the guitar, so if i could figure out some way of integrating that, it would be great. If not, a basic piezo output would be fine, i'll just bring a practice amp. A for piezo's though, I've never worked with them- would it be hard to locate one wide enough to accomodate a 7 or 8 string range? I like those tuners, very cool. If locking tuners won't work, I should be able to use normal tuners, though, right? I also like the "backwards" design for some reason. It seems like it might add to the durability- a slanted headstock makes me nervous, so i'll spend a little extra time thinking about it if it will make it less fragile. One question, if i do an 8 string, can i use a set of mandolin tuners? i happen to have a spare set lying around...(I realize i might have to drill the holes wider on the tuners), but for nylon strings, shouldn't that be OK? Thanks for the ideas, though. -Nathan
  16. thanks everyone for the suggestions. the reason why i want to make one is because i need a classical guitar (7 or 8 string, haven't decided yet) that won't get really crazy going from different weather conditions, especially since 7 or 8 string classicals pretty much have to be custom made. i catch the bus in really cold weather sometimes, then go into abnormally warm buildings. i get really paranoid about wood getting messed up on acoustic instruments. it will mostly be for silent practice anyway. Also, the places i go to practice usually have amps. I've considered trying out a solid model, but i like the fact that it is so portable. If it doesn't work out, though, i think I'll definitely go for a solid body. I originally wanted to buy their 7 string classical model, but i can't locate a place to buy one in the US. The e-mail i sent to the dealer they have on their site was never answered. A few questions... how should I start? what can I use for a bridge? Can locking tuners be used with nylons? I'll probably be starting this in the summer (after classes end). Also, i had a cool idea that might work with these frameworks guitars- if the right piece were made as a "joiner", you could make a double neck out of any two of their guitars!!! I switch back and forth from Steel to nylon string ( i study classical and jazz), so this would be awesome- it might be the most portable doubleneck ever!!! -Nathan
  17. Does anyone know if it is possible to make a guitar similar to a frameworks guitar? What kind of problems would I run into? http://www.frameworks-guitars.com/index.html
  18. Can you use normal tuners for nylon strings, or do you have to use the traditional tuners? What about the bridge? How feasible does this sound: get a L5 body from warmoth http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/bodies/vinta...?fuseaction=l5s Get someone to make me a neck that is wide enough ( I don't have enough time for a project right now) and put the proper strings on it. Is there an archtop bridge with piezo's built in that could be used for this type of project?
  19. Hello everyone, I'm wondering if it would be possible to modify an existing archtop guitar (steel 6 string) into a nylon 7 string guitar with piezo output. Something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...957422&tc=photo I'm assuming the neck might have to be switched out, as well as the bridge. What else could be a potential problem? Should I look for a twelve string archtop to do the conversion?
  20. I play 13's and never have a problem bending. If you can, I recommend using the highest gauge you can, the tone really makes a difference, especially on acoustic.
  21. What's the scale length of your guitar? Maybe a longer scale length will help you? I know I can't play on a Les Paul at all, i feel cramped. A strat-scale (25.5) is better suited for me.
  22. Oops, I think i used a confusing term. Scott seemed to understand me, though. I'm not using the locking nut anymore, so I'm not worried about that. I was worried that the bridge saddle wouldn't take the heavy string. i'll try scott's suggestion as soon as I change strings. Thanks
  23. Hey everyone, I want to use thicker strings on my Ibanez 7-string, but I'm afraid the trem. lock won't hold them. Is there a way to file the bridge area to fit larger strings? I want to use a .70 or .80 on the low B. I've already locked down the bridge, so that is not an issue. Thanks
  24. Fender heavy gauge triangle picks. On heavy strings, it's harder to use medium or light picks, atleast for me. Also, I like having a larger pick to hold onto, the triangle ones are really huge, and fit my hand well.
  25. i'm not really a big fan of auto-wah either. I just wanted to know if it was possible. I like the idea of a switchless wah, but don't really feel like paying for one. Oh, well- perhaps another day... Thanks, everyone for your help, though.
