I've really been wanting to build a custom guitar for a while but I dont know how to get started I got very basic wood working skills and I'm sure that I can make do with the tools I have or borrow or rent the ones I need, can you suggest some easy first projects?

I want to get into customizing and building guitars but I dont know how to start off at it, I have very little wood working skills (1 year of gr. 8 wood shop, but I had the best marks in my class), and I dont have a whole lot of money so do you guys have Idea or tips on how I should sart off? I want to buy a mim strat and mod the hell out of it I want to : fill in the cavitys already routed in the front of it, install an original floyd rose and throw in an emg 81. But how would you suggest fill in the cavitys, I was think place a piece of paper over it then shade over it, then cut them out trace it onto wood, then cut it out with a jig or band saw then do all the rest with sanding? what would you do?
