  1. Howdy, I designing a Tele and I want to build it with a P-90 in the neck. Are 250k pots the norm for P-90's (I assume they are as they are as the P-90 is a single-coil)? Who makes good P-90's and Tele pickups at an affordable price? I've heard Jason Lollar makes good pickups. I seem to hear bad things about Duncans though. Thanks, CMA
  2. Thanks for those websites, they're great! I just realized I had ReRanch in my favorites, doh. Hehe... Thanks again, CMA
  3. Howdy, I've been working on a design for a Gibson SG Limba neckthrough. I've still got a ways to go, and a few questions. The one part of guitar making I'm still quite lost in is the electronics area (wiring, how it works, etc.). Which leads to my first question...I am thinking, for pickups, a mini-humbucker and a P-90. I don't know exactly which position each would be in, but how do you think that would workout? I am also curious about adding a maple top. It would be more for acoustic properties than looks. Generally speaking, how would it affect the tone? My understanding is that it would make it a bit brighter? What would be a good wood to laminate in the neck? Something that might not alter the tone too terribly much. And a good fretboard wood. SO many choices. I like ebony, ziricote, wenge, rosewood, etc. Dark woods are my favorite. What would match up good with limba, acoustically? Something that would maybe accent the Limba and also help articulate the sound. Man, so many questions. I'm still learning a lot about this so I hope you'll forgive me for any newbishness . By the way are there any really good books on finishing and books on wiring that you could recommend? I've got Hiscock's book (which is awesome, by the way) but I am looking for some specifically dealing with those areas. Thanks a ton, CMA
  4. Thanks a ton guys, I really really appreciate all the responses. What is the thickness of an SG body (in in. or mm.)? And again, thanks for your help, CMA
  5. Hmm. What I was trying to say was this: what is the difference between an SG and an LP other than the fact that the LP has a maple top and that they have different pickups? So, what I am trying to find out is that if I put a maple top on an SG and change the pickups, would it sound like an LP? I hope that wasn't too confusing. I also had another question. Does anyone have any information on old fashioned wood working tools that would've been used before electric tools? Not really for time or money saving reasons, I just really enjoy that kind of stuff. Thanks again, CMA
  6. Hey guys, I've been lurking around for awhile, and this a great forum you've got here. I've learned alot. Hoping to start my first project eventually, but right now I'm waiting for my book to come in (Melvyn Hiscock book) to "help fill in the blanks." I hope my ignorance isn't too obvious Anyway, to start, would an SG sound any different from an LP if you put a maple top on and maybe a pickup change? Does anyone here have any experience with Pau Ferro fingerboards? I've heard that they're pretty much like a compromise between B. rosewood and ebony, as far as tonal qualities. Hmm.....well, I had quite a few questions, but my mind is pulling a blank...Oh well, I guess it's best to handle a few at a time. Thanks guys, CMA
