  1. Not test pilots or tyres kickers :-D I bought some ziricote for my wife's fingerboard as I wanted it sappy across one edge. Gem of a guy.
  2. Exactly. It's like the worlds quickest guy at having sex or something. "You call that an award?"
  3. Micromesh is awesome stuff, agreed Mickguard. Great for buffing out CA drop fills once levelled also...OT perhaps... Same goes for Cocobolo and Micromesh, but I would recommend a little water as that dust just kills my lungs to death!
  4. Can't see why it would make a difference. Wood doesn't really interfere with magnetic fields (AFAIK) so the only difference would be the physical distance of the string > wood cover > pickup. You will get a sound. Really. I've heard of builds (someone else back me up on this as I have no reference) where the pickups have been mounted from the rear of the body with no sign on them on the top. I think distance is the key - making the top thin is the best bet I reckon.
  5. Boing. Body blank made out of four pieces of 19mm thick wenge with a dyed black poplar veneer sandwiched between. That should excite the glue witch hunters. Cut a tummy contour, forearm contour and JEM style rear swoopy thing. Did pickup cavity. Can't describe much more. It's not exciting, really. Oh, will have photos once my wife and I return from our wedding anniversary holiday in Paris. Drinking lots at metal bars and going to see Jim again. Must pee up national monuments, as is expected. Bye bye for now. Don't get too excited, or burn any guitars while my back is turned. I'll probably check to see you're all behaving in "cafe" somewhere. \m/ Carl \m/ PS. If I don't post within a week, i've either been arrested, died of alcohol poisoning or moved to Thailand. Really.
  6. I don't post unless I have something to say. You said it all. It's a chunk of wood right now :-D Ummm....nice wood.... Build, damn you!! Make more progress things happen!!
  7. I didn't realise you got very many Russian newspapers in Canidada.... Here's to hoping the paintshop make good what they screwed up!
  8. I would bet that acrylic has probably got a better stiffness that mahogany, especially if you add a carbon fibre fingerboard with a couple of rectangle sections under it down the length :-D
  9. Wooooow. You have a BBC B/Acorn in the room!! A truly beautiful instrument. Quirky, but clean and very functional in design.
  10. I'm wrong a lot of the time Perry, but never confused :-D "Vodka Martini - shaken, not confused"
  11. Ummm....I hope that's not an endgrain join....did you cut enough of the headstock off to scarf it? It might also be too late to suggest that routing out the entire trussrod channel would have been an option if you cut an popped in a fillet :-\
  12. Ummm....I hope that's not an endgrain join....did you cut enough of the headstock off to scarf it? <MOD: DOUBLE POST - PLEASE DELETE! SORRY>
  13. Did you decide against the abalone behind the s-hole in the end....? (hahaha....shoal....)
  14. I would, for sure but do give it a critical eye as far as setup goes. The frets have very nicely dressed rounded ends which is a good sign, but a fret polish and tweaking to your liking will probably be in order. From what I have seen, the Prestige instruments are nicely set up and dressed from the factory unlike the run-of-the-mill Ibanez'. I could be wrong, but this is just what I have seen of course. Buildwise, the routing seems cleaner too. Perhaps a less speed-oriented program on the CNC or better hand-sanding? Can't go wrong with the bubinga neck reinforcement. Perfect. I would love another S without the trem, perhaps in a blackburst. Mmmm.
  15. It's very light and for want of a non-metal term, ergonomic. It's how I would imagine a JS or Radius to sit (having never had my hands on one). The clearcoat is perhaps a little susceptible to dings, but overall the build quality (at least on mine) is flawless. Despite the flatter radius, I wouldn't discount it as a shred machine (although it can be put through it's paces very well). As I mentioned, all three pickups were replaced with Seymours instead of stock, and it's a lot smoother in tone. Oh yes, it sits just as happily on the left leg as the right.... I'd forget the non-Prestige Ibanez' based purely on how pleased I am with this Ibanez.
  16. I doubt it, but the tuning and coupling will suffer for sure. I would prefer to replace bushings if indeed it is a metric/imperial issue. Do you think you can get Metric Stormtroopers also? "Aren't you a little metric for a Stormtrooper?"
  17. Ibanez S1550FM, but as mentioned...the guitar only gives you a voice, you add the character and the soul!
  18. Hmmm. Although I would have thought it unlikely, the holes for the bushing sound like they've either been drilled too large, or not smoothly. Perhaps the tension has compressed the wood? Still, unlikely. I agree with the epoxying, but you'd have to block off the hole in the bottom of the bushing so epoxy doesn't squeeze into the thread. Shimming with wood is non-permanent and sounds a better idea as you can try others if it doesn't work to your requirements.
  19. Over here in the UK, they censor it on TV depending on the number of degrees and not inches.
  20. For real amps, a touch of compression and that's all. My bass amp runs an Electro-Harmonix Black Finger which is plenty cool, but I worry when you have hot tubes and beer in the same vicinity. For recording using my Toneport - a smidge of compression, verb and perhaps stereo slapback to widen a guitar up. Backing off the drive helps, but that's not an effect as such...just sense... I think a nice distortion for bass grind would be nice :-D
  21. I would vote on dropping the "McCarty" on the headstock, but other than that it's coming along very nicely for a first build. How does the neck sight from the bridge end? If you get that part of it nice and straight and the string path on the mark for your bridge on your first set-neck instrument then you've won half the battle. Go to it, Blackdog!
  22. Perhaps. It really depends on the piece of snakewood and the goncalo alves....a couple of nice complementary piece and for sure - a good choice!
