  1. Richie, Hi. Sure id love to offer some help if you need it on your bow. I dont know much about building guitars but bows i do know a thing or two. take down recurve sounds like a fun project. my specialty is miqmaks, primitive compound built by the miqmak tribe in canada said to be 1500 years old. http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=2074ayb here is a early prototype. reflex/deflex longbow/miqmak thing going on. Im one of the few guys in the world developing this desighn. I think it has potenital to out perform regular recurves and what not. But then i just like being the odd ball. take care, ill help in anyway i can just shoot me a msg adn ill give you my email. remember the ticket to a high performance stick bow is "Stiffer tips with out adding mass" to bad we have to compermise so much. bamboo seems to be my fav bow wood ( its a grass i know ). oops sorry folks. i get excited about bows. chris.
  2. I like them, simple yet buitful. great work. chris.
  3. Hi, nice webpage. ill be tuning into your build. im new to this stuff. I have no experience in ash with a acoustic. BUt i do haev experience working with ash. I use it in building bows ( archery ). Long as the grian is strait, and you go slow you probably wont pull any fibers. ash is some tough stuff. Pretty also. makes a nice English longbow. good luck. chris.
  4. Hi, well iv decided to hold off on spending a lot of money up front. So i bought a fret scale ruler, and the saw, im holding off on the miter box till later. I orderd some fret wire. and i orderd a radius block, and i have several files already. so ill go from there. I know ill end up buying the miterbox probably later but i figured id give it a go with out it first. But i was thinking, and just seem logical to go slow till i figure out what im doing first hand. I apreaciate all the responces. Im working on a cigarbox guitar now and im thinking i need to make a acoustic bridge for it. so i did a search and ill be darn if i can find any info on building one. About all ic ould find is they sell a tool to ream the hole out in 5 degrees or i forget what teh other one is. is this tool needed for making the bridge for a acoustic? if so ill need to get one since thats best way it seems to ancore the bridge down on these cigarbox guitars. chris,
  5. Hi, Nathan. Naw i have no way to record. maybe later on. Its fun to play. But the more i read the more I realize how much i messed up on this thing. no one you are the only one who said something. I guess if you dont haev something nice to say dont say anyhing at all and taht would be 200+ people. I dont blame them a kid probably could of done better. But, we all have to start somewhere. I started anouther one this time im gonna go with just a box and see how it sounds compared to the V. Lets hope the next one turns out better and plays just as good. i dont mind constructive critisem. hammer away. im big boy. only way ill learn. Thx for the responce tho, least i know im not being ignored witch i thought for a day or two. Laughs. Chris.
  6. Hi, thank you. I have one of the hammers already. so that will save me a buck or three. looks like i need a lot more than i orginaly thought. guess ill order some new toys tonight. Chris.
  7. Hi, im getting ready to start on my second cigarbox guitar i plan on using frets this time. I plan on ordering the following from stew-mac: Fret Slotting Miter Box scale template fretwire reason im even asking is because when i started building bows years ago I bought a bunch of stuff i neevr ended up using. So, i dont want to make the same mistake twice starting a new hobbie. Thank you very much for any info. chris.
  8. Hello, so i figured id try to build a cigarbox guitar out of some scraps i had in the shop. im in this thing 4.00 strinsg. its a 4 string fretless. the freboard is IPE. the neck is Oak, with a core of bamboo to act as a wanan be truss rod. laughs, since bamboo is stronger in tension than steel. ( i work with bamboo a lot in building bows. we deal with tensions and conpression and a crap load of compermises in bowyer stuff. ) Anyhow the tuners came off a fender i had, never thought id ever haev a use for them. laughs. T his is a string through body. the top and back are 35 year old laminated thin poser board or something of such. the paint job orginaly was gonna be a desert camo, tan base, brown and black stripes. One should test all paint first. the black turned out to be blue. O well. The lightning bolt could of turned out better but all i had to cut it out was a dull exaxto knife. but it gives it some charater. Im gonna start anouther one. and do a better job i hope. the bridge and the nut are corian, a friend gave me, funny thing about this is one day a rock looking this showed up at my door with no name or nothing just the cost of shipping. i tripped on this for a few hours trying to figure out who would send me a rock in the mail. later on i found out it was him. still not sure why it aint pretty but its a sure is fun to play way more fun to play than my expesive guitars. maybe because i built it? or maybe i just dig the blusey sound. here is a phot of her : http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=23jomxe well lets hope i do better next time. bows are much easier to build than instruments, or maybe its just easy cause thats what I know. Chris.
  9. Intresting. I wonder if it works or just sales pitch. can you really tell the diffrence? chris.
  10. http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.ph...;hl=Buzz+Feiton search brought this up. INtresting read. I dont have perfect pitch. So, ill stick with the slop i guess. chris.
  11. Hi. I have bought some ( Archery Bow Riser, ie. the handel section ) riser blanks off ebay. Curly maple and what not. Iv had no problem at all. Just be sure to ask all questions first and if you are concern about something as for a pic of the spot. only problem i see is paying for shipping. heh, wood is heavy. BUt its a valid option. Im lucky to have a lumbar yard near by. BUt they just dont carry some stock all the time. Iv also bought wood from specialty places on the net for real figured stuff. Only advantage buying from stewmac is you know you gonna get a good peice of tone wood. or id hope so anyhow. so you pay a little extra but no gambel. Its up to you i say give it a try. Chris.
  12. I was just thinking about glue today. I build bows, and I use 2 part glues. Smooth on, This is used for FIberglass/wood lamination, and Urac the brown st uff you guys mention in the first page for all wood lams. These two glues are ideal for bows. It gets expesive. Im glad to hear tight bond will work, I really dis like mixing up 2 part glues. ( messy ) Also the brown powder stuff you mention is just ground up walnut shells. cheers. Chris.
  13. Hi. Thanks for the link to the calcultor. Im thinking since i want to try and wind my own pup for this. I probably should run a sustain block all the way through. Not sure if ill rout in a neck joint or run it all the way through also. its raining today, living in the desert we dont get much rain as you can imagen. im gonna take this day off and be lazy. and enjoy the none tripple digits. Works out well gives me time to think about how im gonna do this. And time for all your pros to chime in if you bored. Thank you guys once again. So friendly, helpful. Chris.
  14. Hi, im in the process of building a cigarbox guitar. I built my own box perse now im ready to move onto the neck. Now the size of a box, I think it would funky with a full size neck. Im thinking 17 frets with a fender scale would work well. so can i just copy the locations that are on my strat and cut off the rest. adn will it still be in tune? or does this screw up the key. im not sure how the scale effects they key so i have no idea how the math works. also, do i have to run the neck all the way through, or can i do like a acoustic neck joint, and xbrace the box? Im not postive what im gonna do for frets yet, im getting just burn them in for now since this thing is made from scrap wood. Im gonna make my own bridge so i dont think i need to worry about setting neck at a few degrees. Thanks for any help, ill start on the neck tomorow if i have time. chris. Guess i should also mention this is gonna be a 4 string, and im gonna try to make it eletric. wind my own pup and stuff.
  15. Hi, thanks for posting your webapge for all to learn from. I use Unix and its not working for me; I just get black. iv updated and all so i dunno. Sometimes using Unix i have to compermise on what i get to see. Better than using wnidows i guess. no offence to window users. I did get to work in the shp today. I was able to get the wood cut, for my cigar box guitar. I glued up rough frame for it. I so dont have the proper clamps for this project, building bows ( archery ) i use diffrent setup. Guess im gonna have to buy some clamps. I have my friends on the look out for a real cigarbox for me since i dont smoke. Untill then im building my own box, im using a 2x4 i ripped up, its even a second at that i had laying around for the frame; ill probably use poplar for the back and front. I dont have any frets so im just gonna make this one a fretless, ill just burn the fret lines in or something, ( the second one i build ill use frets to learn. I think the cigarbox is a good way to get involved in this building, plus they sound super cool ) hey its a start. next week ill go buy the proper tools.. but for now im just playing. have a great day every one.
  16. Hi, im in Arizona now. I moved when the doctor told me the heat would be good for my broken body. heh. Iv been here 6 years now and im just getting use to the heat. Thanks everyone. Im gonna try to get soem work done aon a cigarbox guitar today. if time allows. I have been reading lots. checking out some of the custom guitar makers for insperation. For the price between a custom ( big name brand here ) and a custom from a small guy. The small guy is offering a better instrument. ( my opnion, and we know what that means ) Cant wait to build my self a great axe. gonna be a long road ahead of me. But building Bows. iv collected most of the tools ill need for guitars. Just need to get the fretting stuff. ( the most scary part for me ) thanks for the warm welcome. Hope tos ee your work soon, and ill post some pics of this cigar box. chris
  17. Hi, My name is Chris. Im new to the forum I sighned up the other day. Iv been building ( archer ) bows for a while now. THought id give this guitar stuff a try. Iv not been playing that long, so im learning everyday. Im a quick study tho, and most important im having fun. I grew up in the mountains of Oregon. I use to be a logger. I had a bad accident, hit a tree on a dirt bike and had to crawl for two days with a compound fracture. ( lots of little details climbing out of the canyon to get to the logging road, putting the femur back into the flesh, etc but this stuff bores people so ill just keep it short) Took me 2 years to learn to walk. I had my first artifical knee replacement in 2004. so iv had to learn to walk three times so far. Laughs. Ill be 32 in Oct. well dunno what else to say other than im in love with the guitar, its very relaxing and takes my mind off anything that maybe troubling me. Living in pain, this is good. Im collecting parts for my first eletric guitar. Not sure on the body style yet. Thinking SG, or a ICE man maybe or I dunno. SO many great body desighns. I am gonna try to build a cigarbox guitar first just to get my feet wet. Ummm, i guess I should of introduced my self before but I didnt really search the whole sight like I probably should of. Anyhow, thanks for all the great information. Chris.
  18. Wow, that is so cool. Great craftman ship. I have some small guitars that are just for art laying around my desk. BUt something like that would be 10x cooler. even tho i know for a fact my hands are to big to even fret it. I wish i would of started to learn to play when i was 3. The guitar could of kept me out of a lot of trouble as a teen. heh. O well never to late to start. Once again. Great guitar. and it sure looks like it was a challenege you took and did very well at completeing it. I give it a 10+ chris.
  19. You mean you actually gave money without knowing why?... if that was adressed to me. Then No i did not. Hence, my questioning asking. Thanks for the info. Ill donate but i hope you guys dont mind if i poke around and see if i fit in first. im still colecting parts heck i may not have what it takes to make a guitar. time will tell. I do apreaciate the forum, and will show my graditude soon. Chris.
  20. Thanks. Yeah, marketing is good at comming up with fancy words/ I dunno if you have seen the photos on the ebay. but they took the head stock shape and routed that desighn into the body. thats what i ment by jigsaw puzzle. Anyhow, I guess they will say anything to try and sell there product. im not sure who buys BC rich but only body style they have i even like is the mockingbird and the V. the rest are to radical for me. Thanks everyone. look forward to seeing your work in the project part of the forum. I hurt the tip of my ring finger on my fret hand so no playing for me for a while. guess time to get working on the Cigarbox guitar. Ill try to post photos when im done. Chris.
