  1. Spazzyone: can I fill over primer though? I already have some wood filler picked out. It's Elmers filler, it seems to do the job. My concern is more about how the layers should go. Just like the options I listed. Anyone else?
  2. EDIT: The title might be misleading. We've primed the guitar already, we plan to use wood filler over then primer and then prime AGAIN. I just want to know if that's ok. Hey all, just chiming in before I try refinishing my guitar body again. I've tried aersol paints first, but since we had some major mistakes, I sanded the guitar down again. That first time, the wood was filled first, then primed and it DID hide the grain. Now I have all acrylic auto primer and paint (urethane clear-coat too) and we've already primed. We thought this new primer would also fill the grain, but it didn't on the first coat. So, I've laid out some options here. I'm hoping you all can tell me which one is best (if any are better than one another): A ) Primer + primer + primer until the wood grain is filled. (if even possible..?) B ) Primer + wood filler + primer. (what we plan to do) C ) Sand guitar down, wood fill, then primer. I hope to be this guitar very soon.
  3. UPDATE Ok, I went the other route. I found a local auto refinishing place that sold me a pint of urethane for 20 USD! When you mix in the hardener, it is only sprayable for up to 2 hours, then it gets all jelly-like. So, I'm glad it didn't cost me much since I can't use it all. I imagine this will spray on nicer!
  4. Thanks biliousfrog for the reply. I imagine the acrylic would be safe to use, I purchased it from the same place. They mostly carry DuPont auto paint. Yes, price is kind of an issue. I've spent about 70 USD on the guitar as of right now, and none of that on labor (friend's help). So, is aersol going to turn out decent? We have a spray-gun, which is how we're applying the base-coat. If there's not a huge difference in the durability and look of acrylic aersol versus urethane for a guitar body, I'll just take the cheap route.
  5. Hey everyone. Last time I asked a question here, it was about wood filler and it was months ago. Needless to say, I'm still working on the same guitar with the help of friend of mine. We've had some errors here and there, but we've finally got it figured out and we're about to paint and clearcoat my guitar. It's an Ibanez Proline V, for those of you that are curious. So, I'm going to be painting it with base-coat metallic silver paint from an auto paint supply shop. I already bought some aersol clear from their store, yet I have a chance to buy urethane clear in a can. The aersol that I already have is Dupont acrylic clear that cost me $15, the nozzle is larger than a typical spraycan. The urethane only comes in quart size and it will cost me $40 from the same place. So, what do you guys think? We haven't been painting in a professional setting, just in the garage. Will the Dupont aersol be tough enough? Looking forward to some replies and eventually getting this sucka done. EDIT: The acrylic says it's for door jambs on the spraycan. Just thought I'd mention that, since it might be useful in determining the quality.
  6. I have an Ibanez 1660 Proline series (the rare Rhoads V style!) that I've finally got around to sanding down. A close friend of mine has a spray gun and is willing to refinish it so long as I find myself some paint and clear coat. I keep coming across websites that sell spraycan paint marketed towards guitars. Now, he likes working with the sprayer since he can control the pressure at which he paints and I imagine a professional sprayer will be a better option here. I need just enough paint for one guitar body. I'm looking for DARK metallic blue, but I'm having trouble. Can anybody direct me towards a place with a good selection of paint and clear coat? Thanks. PS - I want the finish to look about like this ESP MII: http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/8249/espmiibluemw6.jpg
  7. First of all I want to say that the projectguitar.com pages are excellent and I'm glad I took the time to find the forums since I have an obscure question. In short, I have two guitars that need some type of filler. An Ibanez 1660 V that needs the pickup mounting holes filled/redrilled and an Aria Pro that has a very loose strap peg screw. What product should I use? The only thing I have around the house is JB Weld. I know one thing... it's strong! Can I use that? I'll try to keep the story short on the Ibanez V, but what happened is I sold the stock pickups and their mounting rings a few months ago. I had some good pickups to load in the guitar and I ordered some new standard sized mounting rings, only to find out that this particular Ibanez had custom dimensions. So, the stock mounting rings were a tad larger overall. My new screwholes will overlap with the old ones. Oh, by the way, I will be sanding down the guitar and refinishing it after this. Here's a picture of the Ibanez. They're quite rare, only made in 1985. I hope to give it a full makeover in the next couple weeks!
