  1. are you spraying inside or out side. if you spray out side bring insde and let dry after each coat of finish. you need to hang it to dry use the neck to hold onto when you spray the body when the body is dry then switch and hold the body to spray the neck. be sure your spray gun is clean well. I say this because it happened to me using a dirty gun. remeber to spray fininsh on a scrap wood first to get the hang of how your gun is working. stew mac has some nice stains to add to your finish that will make them a solid color please check them out. take your time
  2. I have a first year prs artist and a custom 22 with dragon pickups anlong with 4 strat's and 3 tele's that I have made. I also have 2 prs copy I have made that simply rock. I play through old fender black face twin and super reverb. also have a pair of vibrolux [silver face] and a prinston reverb and a boogie v twin rack preamp. what to use on a gig will depend on where and what kind of stuff we will be playing. thanks and keep rockin
  3. I would say steel wool also. and a little tung oil rub into the fret board hey soapbarstrat rocks I love you post about himalayas, can I get there on a magic carpet ride I will be out flying tonight.
  4. looks cool. you always learn as you build nice job good luck with the neck build on your next project.
  5. I have finished alder with no grain filler and had no trouble. you might need to spray a few more coats of finish to get the results your want.
  6. check out info on french polish and how to ues it. you can mix your own french polish [shellac and alcohal] this is a hand rub finish that when enough coats are built up is vary nice finish. the thing I liked about this kind of finish is its drying time almost as you put it on it is dry. you can control the amount of finish and you will not get any runs in your finish. one thing keep in mimd is before the spray gun a lot of guitar finishes where hand rub finished. good luck
  7. I have built a few guitar and neck and this is what I have found in my projects. a good tone wood is everything. swamp ash is a good one [ swamp ash] not some scrap ash that is to heavy. maple body will give you a bright sound where alder will give you a nice warm sound. fender used alder for strat and tele boddies. warmoth is a good place to get you a nice body. they are not cheep but vary good. some bodies you might see on eBay might work just fine for you it will depend on what your going for and what sound you want. for me I love all different strats / tele and prs. all these builder have used alder. prs used alder and maple together at one time. this has a sweet sound. if you get a guitar done but the sound is not there you can always upgrade your pickups and bridge. a good solid bridge is worth the money when it comes to sound. a hard tail [string through the body] strat or tele will sound different then the same guitar will a trem. hard tail tend to pickup a little more tone from string going through the body. this is just the kind of things I have found out building my own guitar and necks. hope this helps and good luck to you.
  8. ash is a nice wood and some of the fender strat/tele bodies are made from ash. ash can be light in weight. I have thought of selling a few bodies myself but there are so many people selling stuff like that you might not get what you need to pay for other projects. I would say if you can get the wood for a good price and you don't have a lot of time on a body gor for it . you never know until you try good luck PRS MAN
  9. buying the fret press is money well spent. I'm new at building neck I have built around 10 necks. I bought a fret press to go into a drill press and the frets go in smoth and less work is needed to get them level. I will also add that the diamond fret file works fast. thinking about the cost of everything and how many necks you will build over the years it is worth the money. good luck PRS MAN
  10. looks awesome nice work. I love the wood you have used [ awesome] what pickups did you use and what kind of sound do you get from this
  11. I use 4 bar clamps on a body blank with 2 on top and 2 on btm. I try and not use a lot of glue just enought to see a little glue line when you clamp things togeather. use dowls is a good idea to line things up with out them slidding all over. good luck hope that helps.
  12. thanks I have that book and read it over and I now have a neck angle for the bridge I'm using. one I have thought it out it was no big thing to do thanks for all your info Russ
  13. I use duncan 59 bridge in one of my guitars and a jb bridge in another both sound nice for rock or a blues and just about everything I think. both pickups have a growl [in your face sound to them .] there not a wimppy pickup. hope that helps
  14. ]Hi I'm new here I have built a couple guitar with string through bridges with good results. I'm now building my first guitar using a wrap around bridge do I need to angle the neck for a wrap around bridge. here is what I have the neck cavity is routed with about 1/8 of the neck upove the body [this does not include the fret board] it looks like the strings will clear the bridge. I have put a stright edge on the neck to line up the bridge with the neck. am I going about thing in the right way any info will be helpful thannks
