    V-amp

Actually yeah, your right the clean sounds are crap but, if you use some of the effect and turn the effect down so its almost clean it can sound cool.

    V-amp

I just bought a new V-amp pro for $330 AUS anout 250 US and I have to say that for the money it ROCKS. It may not be the line six POD pro but its over $1000 AUS cheaper and through the 330w PA we use or head phones, the stuff you can do with it sounds awesome. I really recommend trying one out.
  3. Thats not a bad Idea have you got any photos of how it looks?
  4. G'day Mate, Just for your info, I went to the guitar shop today and had a look at some PRS's and Belman guitars (both really good brands) and in the string through versions they all had standard gotoh type toms ( on an angle, top further toward bridge, looking at the guitar front on as if someone else was playing it in front of you) But the interesting thing was that the string ferruls were quite close to the bridge which meant that the strings laid on the saddles but also touched the back of the body of the bridge. I thought this was wierd but these guys obviously know what they are doing.
  5. Is there a danger of the strings being hard up against the body of the bridge with the strings going through the body? The reason I suggested the roller bridge was because it would allow the strings a clear path to the ferrules. I suppose you could move the ferrules further back if you were using a normal TOM Actually I'm studying engineering technologies and I have to use Pro/E for my solid modelling class. It's a bit of a challenge putting in some of the sexy curves guitar have (might be easier actually carving than modelling) But if i get it right it will make things easier having good plans, especially working out stuff like neck angle and head stock angle because you can draw in the pickups and so on an get it all worked out before you go stuffing up 100's of buck worth of wood.
  6. Try this bridge, I think it would work http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailp...g_Roller_Bridge
  7. The way I see it you need 6 on each side because they will pull out if you only use them on the top and if you only use them on the bottom you will have strings cutting into the wool. On the ibanez SZ series they use a brigde with curved saddles that allow the strings to curve down to the ferrules. THey call it gibralter II or something. I'm not sure if you can buy them. Maybe start a new post on the topic and see what comes up. Most people won't know you're asking the question if it's buried in another post. I'd also like to find out about ferrule placement, again on the SZ series, they are staggered, I assume this has something to do with compensation but not sure.
  8. Actually I'm an Aussie but I was born in Germany. Whether or not it's derogatory depends on the person I suppose. Personally I don't really care, at work I get called Kraut, Jerry, Bosch, Nazi and the very first nickname I got when I was an apprentice was LJB which stands for little jew burner (not very nice or politically correct) but you don't get to choose your nicknames. I can tell if people are saying stuff in fun or if they mean to piss me off and I react accordingly. So in short call me what ever you want but don't call me late for dinner I'm working on my CAD model for my guitar at the moment, I'll post a jpeg of it when I'm done. Hopefully I'll get some ideas oi oi oi
  9. Does any one know where you can get the "things" (insert thing name here) that go through the body to make a string through setup. I have had a look on several websites but since I don't even know what they are called it's a bit hard to look for them. I am currently drawing up my design on pro/Engineer wildfire 2 which is pretty cool coz I can do a solid model of the guitar which is kind of like doing a mockup build and it makes neck angles and stuff easier to work out. Not to mention that I can generate dawings for all the parts. Has anyone else done this and how did you go? But back to the point, what are those little things called and where can you get em?
  10. Is there somewhere on the site that has timber storage recommendations?
  11. Hey, what do you all think about storage of timber between jobs. I live in a fairly humid part of Australia (even though it doesn't seem to want to rain anymore) And I was thinking about storing the bits for my job and a container witth some desicant bags in it. Is this suitable or is it better to have a little bit of humidity. All this is based on the timber being cured when I buy it. Any way what do you reckon?
  12. Hi, I'm just in the planning/concept stage of my build and I've been giving some thought to what you can do to prevent or reduce fret buzz and have quite low action. Do things like the type of fret or the neck radius have any affect? Is there a dimension for the action at a given fret that is the theoretical or realistic lowest possible action? To me the more I look at my guitar (cheapish Ibanez) it seems like there would be.
  13. It should be ok, but it will break your back in two I would chamber it to get rid of the unwanted weight. I forgot to mention that I'm BLOODY HUUGE!!
  14. What sort of engineering never uses titanium or inconel? Electrical Fair enough
  15. Thankfully I moved onto engineering and will never have to work with that material again.
  16. but what the hell could a titanium block do to the sound of a guitar that could possibly make it worth that much money? anyone ever owned one or played a guitar that had one?
  17. G'day, Has anyone here built a body out of red gum? This probably applies more to the Aussies out there. I was thinking about a neck through double cutaway les paul and using red gum for the wings and covering the top with silky oak (lacewood) No idea about the neck yet probably five piece maple and something else. Just not sure if redgum is suitable for guitars.
  18. Yeah What is it with G anyway?? I would be happy not to bother with compensating anything else if I could get thatstring to sound right. Up until now I have only played guitars and not looked into the science behind them. Is there an easier way to get the g string sounding right??
  19. Hey alL I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about this Buzz feiton tuing system. From what I can see it's just a different nut. Is that right? Has anyone put this system into any of thier guitars and if so can you really hear the difference?
  20. Hey, Thanks to all of you who have welcomed me aboard! I'm looking forward to planning out my first build. I'd like to do something along the lines of a neck through version of a fender robben ford, I think these are one of the coolest looking guitars out. I'm not trying to save money by building my own own guitar, I just like the idea of building stuff myself and I think a guitar will still be cheaper than my last project which was a resto on a car that cost me 15g and 3 years. The only reason I got out of it as cheap as I did was that I did everything myself. Anyway, enough about all that, stay tuned for my updates on plans and so forth coz I really will appreciate input. If there's any other Aussies (pronounced "ozzies" for my american friends ) out there, I'd like to talk to someone about local quality timber supplies. I found a good luthiers supply in sydney that has good bits and services like pre slotted finger boards, so that will definately help for my first one. Take it easy boys and girls Why does think flag not wave? we may not have rain but we have wind
  21. Hi Everyone! Just thought I'd introduce myself. My real name is Sascha (male) I'm 29 and from Brisbane (OZ) and looking forward to starting my first guitar. I've been reading heaps of posts and looking at lots of photos and I'm impressed by the stuff that I see here, especially the les paul guitar of the month. I was just wondering how some of these guitars compare in sound and feel to some of the really top notch pricey ones that you can buy. Is there some sort of secret that companies like gibson and so on have or is a top quality, awesome guitar within reach of the average guy who's willing to spend the time and money to do it? Anyway catch yuz later By the way I know my name is kraut and I'm from Australia, thats coz I was born in the fatherland
