  1. Hey Guys, Ive floated around here a few times getting some great advice from you pros....... I recently replaced a mighty mite nut for a graph tech nut...problem is that its still too high...so iItook it out to file it but realized its a radiused neck....I went and got the old nut and saw that the bottom was flat, but it doesnt seem to make sense...wouldnt a radiused neck have a radiused nut slot?? If it is that means I would have to take the center block out of the graph tech nut.... Its a mighty mite neck and is radiused from 9.5-12.... SO is it radiused or not???
  2. There are two wires, one blue and one red. The link you gave was great, too bad mine wasnt on there. Looks as though its foreign of sometype. No intentions of using it-its mere curiosity.
  3. It has a cover, Im thinking its generic due to no markings.... Well, my intentions were to post a pic but I dont know how on this site..
  4. Hello everyone, Im somehwhat of a newbie to guitar building. I just finished my first strat and came across an old pickup I've had for years. I dont know where it came from or what it is. No names, no markings, nothing. Its a humbucker, it looks like an old les paul pickup only with two rows of magnet screws Id post a pic if this web site would let me......
  5. Hey Thanks Rich, The graphtech nut I bought was preslotted. The height to begin with was like .018-.016. It was ok to play but when I started to do the set up I realized that Fender and most places say .005 is the standard. So I have been filing and got the low E and A strings to around .010, the definatley play better. I was going to sand the bottom but the glue that I used was not "dabbed, it was Slabbed!" So I didnt want to deal with taking it out. Well, thanks for the input..to filing I shall return...
  6. Ok guys, Once again I am back with a few more questions. I have built a strat, it sounds Amazing with a set of Dimarzio virtual vintage pickups. The neck feels great aside from some minor, minor string buzz. I adjusted the neck and got like .012-.013 relief and it plays well. It seems that the neck does not want to get any straighter, but it seems to be ok. The one problem I am having is a replacement graph tech nut I replaced. Its way high, I messed up the installation, being that I am a novice. So I have been filing the nut with some files, slightly sloped back towards the headstock. Its taking forever though! I am using some torch tip cleaners someone recommended on this site. Its working, but slowly. SO just a few Q's: Does nut depth matter? I have not found any clear answer. But...I have realized that many guitars have half the string in the slot and half out. Second, if it does matter, can I just file the top?? basic I know, but like I said this is my first build and set up!
  7. Hello again, I had a post a few days ago talking about a fret buzz problem. So I did the steps people and the tutural section told me to do. My neck is really flat, only a little bow now, but its doable considering my hard strumming. I still get fret buzz when i "ramp" on the high e past the 12th fret. BUT-I have found that the nut I replced is too high. Each string allows for at least .012 on my feeler gague, thats supposed to be .005 right? What are my option? remove the strings and file down the nut slots or can I take the whole nut out and file the bottom?? It seems filing the slot would be best but the files are not cheap......any suggestion?
  8. Thanks for the advice postal. I think I will adjust the truss rod some more, I still get a reading on the feeler gauge at .010 at the 6th fret low e. Should I consider more adjustment considering there seems to be more bow in the neck? Its a slight bow in between the 4-6 frets. The orginal measurments were between .011-.012. The new one is like.010. But I get different readings on the g, b, and high e strings. They are more like .006. Is there a possibility of a twist in the neck? Or Will I get various readings for each gague string? Your patience upon my ignorance is appreciated this is my first attempt at building and set up....
  9. Ramping postal? Never heard that before, but if it means bending the H$%# out of the string, like most blues players do, yea thats me. As far as fret leveling? Never done it, sounds easy, maybe Ill have to investigate. Yea I bought a mighty mite compound radius neck, goes from 9.5 to 12 i think. ....would that have any effect? I am only used to flat, old strat necks. It wouldnt suprise me that I may have to level the frets, I already had to replace the nut with a graph tech nut. The high e twanged and buzzed when it was played open.....
  10. Hello everyone, Just built my first strat. It sounds great aside from some minor gliches. I have been trying to set the guitar up. I noticed a slight bow in the neck and so I did the feeler gauge method of assing the string to fret height. The truss rod was adjusted and the neck is a little straighter and better. The one problem I am having is fret buzz on the higher notes past the 13-14th fret. Its not bad until I bend them and then they get buzzy and almost muted. One problem I thought it may be is that the 22nd fret may be lifted a bit due to the pick guard. I had to cut the pickguard where the neck meets it due to the 22nd fret barely slipping over it. If it were because of the lifted 22nd fret how could I check it without taking the neck and pickguard off? Could it be as simple as adjusting the bridge??
  11. No hurt feelings... and yes heartache for the guitar.... I shall call a professional....maybe they can "toutor" me on electronic basicssss...haha I believe I just ended this thread.....
  12. Ok guys thanks for the bashing.... So I don't know much about electronics... And of coarse THIS is my FIRST ever guitar build...I only know how to play...so if ya wanna bash me ..go ahead but as far as I am concerned I am starting to build because I want to learn..As some of you may be experts I am not, thats why I am asking....so 'scuse me for being ignorant on electronics..its not my forte. And one last question...why the in the world would I send my guitar to an expert (and pay them) for a guitar I built? seems pointless...then again... for the ones helping I THANK YOU for your advice..
  13. Yea he switched the input jack and no sound came out............................... We re did the grounding and everything and still an over riding hum.... The pu's sounded weird as well, when I had them in my original Strat they sounded ok....but now they just sound too muddy, so I was putzin around with getting new pu's before I installed the old ones but instead had the old ones put on.... they are weird pu's, old lace senors made by Gary Levinson prolly in the 80s.. any suggestions for new Pick ups?? I have heard Dimarzios and they sounded great.... Like I said its too bad I couldnt get them pre loaded in a pickguard....
  14. Hey Guys, I had someone who actually "knew" guitars aside from just plain electronics. They went through the grounding process and realized my pickups were all jacked up......(and no I have no experience in electronics) SO anyways a longs story short.... I am buying a whole new assebly, new pickups, new everything...it would be nice to buy one already loaded and wired..any suggestions???? who makes the best strat pickups? EMG Dimarzio etc
  15. Would the spring tremolo claw floating have anything to do with the grounding. My old strat has the claw touching the body, my new strat has it floating above the body.... hopefully you know what i mean....it could be related....any ideas whether that could be it? Maybe just placing the claw directly on the body would do something..... Best advice yet.....thanks guys
  16. One last question before I rip it apart and start looking for answers.... Anyone ever heard of Blade guitars?? well i happen to have "Levinson" pickups...lace senors from the 80s...hahahahahahahahah wonder if the pickups are jacked........ yet another possiblity....any thoughts So it plays (great when I am touching the guitar cable) side from a ton of buzzzzzzzzz
  17. I had it wired exactly like fender does SRVs guitar (the artist model) .....uhhuh
  18. Well, I got my Guitar back.... It plays, but there is still an over riding hum in the background. When the volume is on 10 shes fine, when shes turned down below that it sounds horrible. The more distortion I add the more muddled the sound is..... The input jack may have something to do with it, when I first plugged in for the very first time my chord input wouldnt go all the way in so I had to take it out and bend the inside of the jack where it touches the cable.... it eventually went in...could that do anything to it??? The only other plausible option is that it is wired too hot...could it be that lace sensor pickups cant handle a wiring schematic like SRVs strat???? too much output? is there even such a thing? someone give me hope before I throw it out the door!
  19. Yea- here’s the update. I plugged back in and started to experiment with the cable/input jack. So I put on the distorted channel and it was humming like crazy. So instead of messing with the volume knob I just cranked it and started to mess with the cable, I realized every time I touched the cable the freakin' noise went away. Therefore-IT MUST BE A GROUND! Duh...then I called my friend who wired it for me and they said they had hardly any room to put the ground in (where the wiring schematic said to) so they grounded it in a different spot on the body...so he must have messed up the whole ground. It definitely has a great sound when it isn’t freaking humming like 1000 bumble bees. (Hey sounds like the next name of my blues song...haha) Ok so I sent it back and they are supposedly going to fix it and I will know by tomorrow night... lets hope that’s it....
  20. The whole time the amp is on (or my POD xtlive is plugged in) the noise is there. A consistent hum, which is very loud and makes it so I cannot add distortion.. is it a possiblity that my input jack is jacked up or maybe that my ground wire is screwy?? I may just have to take it to a professional.... ughhhhhh
  21. When I touch the chord when its pluggued in the jack it does change the noise. Its a constant buzz and it over rides all of my sound....If i play with he volume on the guitar jacked all the way up on Ten it sounds best and as I turn the volume down it gets bad, it like fluckuates (spell?) the hum/buzz sound gets worse. What would reverseing the output jack wires do anyways??
  22. No the noise is consitent regardless of where I stand. Im like 10 ft away and it still has the same noise. The pickup slectors does not change the noise either. The wiring diagram is found here: http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/index.php click the adobe diagram for Stevie Ray Vaughan Stratocaster. It will have the diagram under the second "yes"
  23. Ok Guys, SO I bought a MM neck, MM body and then had my pickups (3 single coil lace senor pickups) wired according to SRV'S strat. When I play all I hear is a crazy humming noise, like as in too much feedback. And all i can do is play it with hardly any distortion and with the volume all the way cranked. WHen i turn the volume control down on the strat the humming feedback gets worse. The guys who wired the strat wired it with new pots and copper wiring instead of aluminum. SO, is there anything wrong with the volume control or is there too much resistence? (I hardly understand electronics, all i know how to do is play, and I know what its supposed to sound like and this isnt it!!!) Someone please help!!! All i want to do is play the freakin thing! Much appreciation for anyone who has an idea!
  24. Yea its a mighty mite. Dude you were dead on. How advanced is it to put on a new nut??? What type tools might I need?? Thanks Guys this is really helpful.....
  25. Hello all, just built my first guitar. Its a strat. All seems to be right when i strung it up except for a tinny buzz on the open high E string. WHen i fret it-it sounds great, when I play it open it is very tinny. SOmeone said it could be the nut. How could I fix that>>>>>???????\ Help please!!!
