  1. I received a pickup i bought through ebay and i cant put it in the guitar yet as its not finished. Anyhow the guy wants me to leave feedback so i need to test it. Its a seymour duncan SH11. Barring installing it in another guitar how do i know which color wire is which coming out for testing resistance to make sure its good? I have green, black, red, white and a bare wire. I know from looking at the wiring diagram on SD's website but what is the best way. I know I can just try each lead combination but it would be nice to know what each wire is actually for.
  2. Quick and easy. The best kind. Thank you sir. Much appreciated.
  3. Im getting a locking floyd nut for a 1 11/16 width. But when planning out the neck I would like to find out how wide it is from headstock side to bridge side.
  4. Thanks for all the info. Well I am building a 5150 style guitar. I always liked the way it looks and want to do it myself. The 5150 was heel adjusted with a notch at the end of the neck to adjust it with. However I would much prefer a headstock adjustment. I already bought the allen nut rod so I would prefer to use this one if possible. Im trying to make an ok guitar but for a first guitar I dont expect perfection. This is something that ive already been working on for 4 months and have the body cut out and rounded over. I have the wood for the neck with enough to actually make 4 necks if i screw up. I just think for the sake of making life easy head adjustment is the way to go. I probably should pick up the floyd nut so that i can have those dimensions before i go ahead with this but then again I do have enough wood for 4 necks. Its just making up my mind on what to do with this rod is holding me up.
  5. Before i do decide to flip the truss rod upside down I just wanted to see from others if they thought it could possibly be an issue. i know that the screw would have to be turned counterclockwise instead of clockwise to straighten the neck from a downward bow and im not to concerned with that. I decided since i was going to have a floyd rose locking nut and sting tree it would be smarter to probably have this truss rod heel adjustable. What do you guys think. Is this something that should be avoided? Just want to double check before starting to cut.
  6. Thanks. I was pretty sure that was the case. But before i made a mistake I thought it best to ask here. The headstock is non angled.
  7. I read on another forum that this isnt possible but I could swear that it was. You guys are obviously the ones to ask so let me know what ya think. I ordered a hot rod truss rod and If i have to heel adjust it, then it would be a good thing to know before i start routing. It will be an R4 nut I will be using.
  8. According to stew macs web site you are supposed to install the hot rod with the adjusting nut at the bottom. That was the whole reason i was vearing away from that. If i have to go 7/16 from the bottom of the fingerboard that would put me down to low into the headstock or so i assumed. On my squier the center of the adjustment nut appears to be closer to 3/16 so it made me a little nervous. If you guys are saying itll be fine then ill buy one as it seems like the best way to go.
  9. Well im getting ready to begin work on my first neck. Im going to make it a 2 piece and non angled headstock. I would like the adjustment from the head side and am going to have a floyd locking nut on it. I am trying to decide which truss rod I should do for my first neck. I was looking at the hod rod but it requires you to route 7/16 beginning at the bottom of the fingerboard. THis seems to deep for a non angled headstock. Maybe better for a heel adjustment. I was tempted by the martin truss rod as I can route a single flat channel. Im not worried so much about routing a curve but I just am stuck on my decision on martin style, vintage style, or double action ones. What would you guys suggest as a first run? This is why ive chosed to do a 2 piece neck as itll be easier to route for me then glue on the fingerboard.
  10. Soon I hope to be ordering a precut fingerboard but I am not quite sure where to go on the frets. Im currently used to using a Squier Strat and Im not to familiar with using various fret sizes. http://www.warmoth.com/supplies/supplies.c...action=fretwire Im looking as using either the medium jumbo FW6130 or the jumbo FW6150. What are your opinions of these. Im attempting to build an EVH 5150 from scratch. Im using a 10 inch radius neck although most copies use a 12 as floyd rose is supposedly a 10 inch radius.
  11. Ok so then if Im going to get the floyd rose the best option is to obviously make a 10 degree radius fingerboard. Thanks. Might have saved me a few headaches down the road.
  12. If im going to use a floyd rose which I have read to be a 10 degree string radius, should the neck radius be the same or would 12 degree be fine. I was going to go with a 12 degree neck but figure it would be smart to double check with others who would know.
  13. Sorry if Im sounding confusing. Ive never played an electric guitar with the 1 3/4 neck width at the nut. Seems kind of wide for an electric. Ive only played on 1 5/8 and 1 11/16. I guess im saying does it seem right to make it with 1 3/4 nut width?
  14. Ok guys I was checking into the possibility of guitarbuildingtemplates.com and I was told that the nut width on the beretta template he has is 1 3/4. Does this seem excessive to anyone. I want a larger nut as I have large fingertips but i figured 11/16 was what I was probably looking for. Any input appreciated.
  15. Will keep that in mind. Im currently looking at some stuff im trying to snap to rulers in photoshop. I might try to save the money first but If i do order those ill be sure to let him know.
