  1. I've just taken a look at his site and it's pretty awful, especially the digital photos which are really blocky. He needs a good web designer to make it look professional. Apart from that I have to agree the the photoshopped image and the constant Darrell references are tacky too.
  2. Hi Guys, Does anybody know where if Aircraft Stripper is available in the UK? I'm trying to take the finish off an RG 370 body and need to take off the sealer as well as there is a lot of woodworking to be done. I've tried sandpaper and a heat gun but it's taking forever and ever so I'm starting to look at chemical stripping...As the finish is polyester, my Rustin's Strypit doesn't even touch it. If anybody knows if Aircraft Stripper (or something similar) is available in the UK then I'd be very greatful. Thanks Chris
  3. Hmmm.....I'm considering using it to spray acrylic
  4. Hi Guys, I'm going to be getting a spray gun/compressor kit from an EBay seller in the next couple of days and I've been looking at all the finishing options. I've decided on Acrylic as it's waterbased. I've seen a few online such as the Chestnut acrylic but does anybody use another acrylic or recommend something else for a noobie sprayer? Thanks in advance Chris
  5. Sounds like the same kinda problems I've been having...I bought Rustin's Strypit and it doesn't work on the polyester finishes that Ibanez use. I then tried a heatgun and there are a few scorch marks...Luckily I'm going to do it in an opaque colour. I'm now going to sand it down instead - should have used that method in the first place...I need to sand off everything as I have a fair bit of woodworking to do.
  6. I just bought this on fleabay -> hope it's ok...thought the price was pretty good
  7. Hi Guys, After considering the Preval system, I'm looking at an Earlex HVLP system as it looks more cost effective than Preval, especially as Screwfix Direct have it on their site for £69.99 (about $140). Has anybody used this HVLP or are there other HVLPs that would be better suited to the task?
  8. Hi Guys, I've been looking through the posts and looking at the Stewmac site about the Preval system. I want to refinish an RG body I bought off EBay that I'm currently stripping down. How many coats of paint can you spray before you have to replace the "power unit"? Thanks in advance :o)
  9. Thanks for the tips guys - I found a guage in my dad's toolbox and it looks like 3.2mm heatshrink is the way to go as the wire was about 2.5mm in diameter.
  10. Hi Guys, I'm currently putting together a guitar with some EMGs and they came without the heatshrink tubing (I got them on Fleabay). What's the best diameter of heatshrink to get? I saw some on Fleabay that was 3.2mm in diameter...Would this be ok?
  11. I saw this on the Argos web site (for all those who live outside the UK, Argos is a catalog store) Heres the link It's a shame that there aren't any in depth specs on there but I'm sure a bit of digging with Google will find some.
  12. What are you thinking of using for the clearcoats afterwards? I'm thinking of giving this a go on my old Encore E76 body
  13. Are you using the same method from the swirling tutorial and if so, where do you get your Borax?
  14. Thanks for that - I've been reading up and I think Polyurethane would be best for my needs. Can anybody recommend one on sale in the UK that you can spray? I don't mind if it's a rattlecan or somehing I can load into an airbrush
  15. Hi Guys, I'm investigating refinishing a Ibanez RG and I'm looking for a good spray lacquer. Does anyone here in the UK use a particular polyurethane lacquer that they could recommend? Cheers in advance Chris
  16. Hey Guys, Has anybody tried these Single Locking Floyds that seem to appearing on fleabay and other sites?
  17. Hey guys, I've taken delivery of a Ibanez RG 270 body from fleabay and I hate the Burgundy colour. It is horrible. I'm thinking of refinishing it using the Nitro aerosols that you can get from Manchesterguitartech. I've been reading the info on ReRanch regarding polyurethane finishes and it's states on there that it is possible to strip the sealant off and respray directly onto the colour coat. What kind of finish does an RG have? I'm probably going to strip the body down completely but it would be good to know so I have an idea what kind of product I'm going to need to remove the paint. Thanks in advance Chris
  18. I suppose in theory you could break connection that goes from lug 2 of the bottom part of the tbx to lug 2 of the top park and send it to a switch? I'm thinking about doing an Esquire type switching idea to give me: 1) Volume control only - tone pot bypassed 2) Volume control and tone engaged - Treble Cut 3) Volume control and tone engaged - Bass Cut I've got a spare TBX lying around that I could use for this and it would be nice to find a use for the 3way - I don't find the "bassy" tone option particularly inspiring - I hate preset tones. If anybody thinks I'm barking for suggesting this then let me know :o)
  19. I've got the PRS kit. I tried to fit the neck to the body as a pre-assembly test and I'm gonna have to sand a little bit from the neck pocket to get a good fit. I'm going to blog my experiences of building it and will post the link when I get started.
  20. If only I had a) the cash and the room Wood carving duplicator
  21. Thanks for that - I had a look on EBay and it's certainly tempting...I think I'll leave it until I've done the SAGA kit...don't have much room to store anything at the mo. I had a Craft Supplies catalogue today...Lots of body blanks listed in there. I checked online and hardly any of them are listed and almost all of them are out of stock...hmmm - think I will avoid them.
  22. Hi Gang, Just a quick query. I'm currently building a SAGA PRS type kit and I'm thinking beyond that now. I would like to make a telecaster type body and mate it to a neck bought from Ebay. Now I know most 1st guitars are not very good so I would like to experiment with making the body from basswood before I tackle harder woods. Does anybody know where I could get a basswood blank in the UK? I've been googling and can't find anyone.
  23. Hi Guys, I've got hold of the latest Stewmac catalog and they have Colortone pigments for waterbased lacquer and a waterbase brushing vanish. Has anybody tried the brushing vanish and is it any good? I don't have spray equipment and don't really want to have to fork out for an airbrush and propellant if I can get away with it. Also would the waterbase Colortone pigments be ok for dying a top that would then be coated in Rustins Plastic Coating? Cheers Chris
  24. I'd probably go for a solid colour although the top is a good one...If I wanted to go for the wrapover I'd do a solid colour - actually i think i'll look into having the stop tail/tunomatic combination and try bring out the top.
  25. I came home to find the kit waiting for me...Opened it up - yup the hardware is rubbish and I might job lot it all on eBay soon. There's an awful lot of that sealer coat on it...so much that it was impossible to push fit the neck into place. When I get started I can see myself doing a lot of gentle sanding in the neck pocket. The flame veneer is quite nice and it would be a shame to just put a solid colour over it. I'm thinking of taking the top sealent off with nitromors (as recommended here). I'm going to experiment with finishings on my dodgy old Encore that I've kept lying around for just such experiments. I'm thinking of starting a blog to chart my progress. I'm not looking to start until the New Year but it would be fun to look back at my first semi-serious project in the future.
