  1. I know this is a Yamaha RGX, I just don't know the model number.. if anyone can help out I'd greatly appreciate it!! I know it was a Strat lay-out for pickups with a locking trem and nut. My personal one had a Seymore Duncan Hotrail in the brigde and EMG Select in the middle body slot. I really must find one of these guitars for sentimental reasons. I loved that little AXE.. I should have never sold it. Oh, and while I'm here, check out the latest recording (rough cut) of the Bolt Kit I build back in Dec. Noodling ~ rough cut ~ Thanks tons for any help! DISREGUARD!! it is a Yamaha RGX 603 thanks to those who read my plea for help!
  2. the standard Carvin body wood is Alder, they have a Swamp Ash option. Warmoth makes bodies out of almost any wood out there I believe.
  3. the GK1 was $458 shipped next, either a Carvin bass kit or a Grizzly kit.
  4. you must be on the Carvin boards too.. thanks for your hints, tips and most importantly Woodburst link.
  5. not using a kit would have been a bad idea.. I'm all thumbs!! The build up was enjoyable and I'm thinking that doing a bass using a Carvin kit is in my future. I checked out the Grizzly kits and they look nice too, I may give one of them a shot. Here is a link to a couple of riffs I put down using the GK1 (neck and bridge pickups) with a GNX3000 and a couple of it's presets. The distorted tone was fuzzy due to my PC's settings.. I'm working on that. simple riffs
  6. I've only done one guitar so please don't consider me an expert.. and if I'm wrong someone with more expirience please correct me. I used Forby's Glossy Tung oil on my guitar and it came out quite well, I tinted the oil with Bing Cherry from Woodburst (as you are on a tight budget you might not want to take that route) using Bounty papertowels and old T-shirts to apply the coats of oil. Initially I sanded with 220 grit between coats but once I got close to the color I wanted I switched to 0000 steel wool. here's the link to my post showing the end result: my kit guitar I hope this helps.
  7. I had been needing a second axe and finally got through all the research, HOW-TOs and other important stuff.. Here she is, my Carvin GK1. options are black pearloid pick guard/ rail humbuckers/ bridge pickup always on switch/ sperzel tuners thanks for all the guides and tutorials!
  8. I noticed in my searching through the forums that there were questions about Carvin's pickups and feel that I may be able to help out a little. I bought a DC125C back in 1992 with the M22SD and AP11 on it, I played them for a while then decided to put and EMG 89 and SA in the guitar. After a little routing work to make the new pick ups fit I wired them up and plugged in to play, to my amazement there was not a huge difference!!!! The SA is a touch cleaner than the AP11 but the 89 sounded almost exactly the same as the M22SD! Oh well, money spent and a lesson learned. I can't speak for if they've made any changes to the pick ups since back in '92 but that is my impression. I hope that this may help some. SCGoatMan
