  1. I used a Carvin neck on my first "build." It was a bolt on bass neck with a blank paddle headstock. I made the body myself. This was a very good way for me to get my feet wet before advancing to the next step of building the necks myself. I think a kit guitar or at least a pre-routed body and pre-made neck would also be a good way to get started, especially if you do not have some of the basic tools that make the job easier (and more precise). Be careful though, you could end up with this building addiction that can get very expensive! Hey, at least it's legal
  2. Does this mean that if I buy a guitar body that is routed for a standard strat trem, I could put in a wilkinson, and vice versa?
  3. I'm curious, how much of the work was done with big machines, and how much with hand tools? Did you use a big-a** band saw for the basic shape? I'm thinking about building my own guitar myself, and I'd like to know what types of tools to which I'll need to gain access. Obviously mom's jigsaw won't do everything I need to do. Did you go from zero to building a body from scratch all at once, or did you experiment with assembling parts guitars first and then work up? I thought I'd get store bought parts first and build one that way. The work these guys (yerself included) produce here is really cool. I'm not thinking of starting my own company or anything like that, but I'm interested in the whole process of going from being a player to building necks and stuff yourself. I'm just a college-loan away from getting started (hee hee).
  4. I got a Squier Bullet at the pawnshop as a fill-in guitar after my car was stolen with all of my equipment in it. It hella sux. Avoid these like the plague. I heard someone once advise beginners to get a good quality guitar to start out with. Then, if playing doesn't work out (losing interest, etc.) at least there'll be some resale value to it. If you have to go cheap, there are squier strats floating around pawnshops all over the country for around a hunndred bucks. They ain't great, but they're not bad for that kind of money.
  5. Yer right, he is underrated.. (I'm a dinosaur, too) A buddy of mine's band opened for BOC on a club gig about ten years back, and they were cool. It's kind of bittersweet to see a band that once filled arenas playing in a club for about 200 people though.
  6. Thats the question you asked. You want a description? or don't you think it would be easier to find out for yourself, ie. go to your local music store and plug a stock tele into a Fender Twin. I told you what MY telecaster sounds like but I doubt my answer (or anyone's, for that matter) would do you any good anyway. Actually, that was the point of the whole discussion, prior to the technical qustions which were kindly answered. The question being, which tele, given all of the pickup options fender offers. Sheesh, what a can of worms...
  7. yeah, they sell the first act guitars at wal mart, and I noticed a little display with GHS strings, too! That's here in knoxville, but I would imagine that all wal marts have the same stock. Damn, 40 miles? you must be waaaay out in the country!
  8. I like it. I'm also interested in what software, processing, guitars, etc you used. It sounds like good old Mercyful Fate to me. I had 'Don't Break the Oath' and 'Melissa' on vinyl back in the day. Do you have a singer who can shriek like the King? oh, by the way, the only thing I would do to the mix so far is to bring up the level of the bass drum, if possible. Small quibble, though.
  9. I was thinking about a strat-stlye body, but I'd really like a 24 fret neck. I'm aiming at something like the 80's era Jacksons, or my old washburn. I was figuring on a HSS type of arrangement, but I'd probably want to put stacked humbuckers in the single coil slots. I do a lot of playing into my computer, and I pick up a lot of hum from the computer monitor. I'm looking for a lot of versatility. In my band we do a wide variety of things, from STP type grunge to really clean type stuff like CHilli Peppers. A tremolo system would be cool, too. I took your hint and looked at the carvin site, and their bodies looked cool. Do you know how well the Wilkinson trem systems work? All of the routing for a floyd rose seems like a lot of work. thanks
  10. If you match the polarity of the neck pickup and bridge pickups, and then put the middle pickup out of phase, when you have the selector set to run both the neck and middle pickups together, they will act like a humbucker (i.e) noise cancelling. At least, that's the way my strat was wired. I'm not sure about how the bridge humbucker and the single coil in the middle position would interact, though. I've only wired a few guitars. Hope this helps.
  11. If I had the answers to my own questions, I wouldn't have asked any
  12. I knew enough to know what I didn't know, didn't I? As regards pickup configs.. there are apparently 4 different ones rather than the three I thought there were.. as regards neck overhang.. well I found that info here.. as regards helpful info.. I found that here too. As regards the philosophical question, "what is the tele sound, anyway, it was a philosophical question, wasn't it? All apologies to the purists, but the various different pickup configs have been around since at least '72 (see fender website). Marksound's post seemed a little harsh, so I said so. Since he offered me some valuable info in regard to another post, I don't think he took it personally. And since the info from Mickguard solved my problem and I gave him due credit and thanks for his input, I fail to see what your beef is.
  13. Ahhh, yes...brings back memories.. I can almost smell the bongwater
  14. Try making one that looks like a big pot leaf! I bet you can find a zillion high school students who could draw you one!
