  1. I used a Carvin neck on my first "build." It was a bolt on bass neck with a blank paddle headstock. I made the body myself. This was a very good way for me to get my feet wet before advancing to the next step of building the necks myself. I think a kit guitar or at least a pre-routed body and pre-made neck would also be a good way to get started, especially if you do not have some of the basic tools that make the job easier (and more precise). Be careful though, you could end up with this building addiction that can get very expensive! Hey, at least it's legal
  2. Does this mean that if I buy a guitar body that is routed for a standard strat trem, I could put in a wilkinson, and vice versa?
  3. I'm curious, how much of the work was done with big machines, and how much with hand tools? Did you use a big-a** band saw for the basic shape? I'm thinking about building my own guitar myself, and I'd like to know what types of tools to which I'll need to gain access. Obviously mom's jigsaw won't do everything I need to do. Did you go from zero to building a body from scratch all at once, or did you experiment with assembling parts guitars first and then work up? I thought I'd get store bought parts first and build one that way. The work these guys (yerself included) produce here is really cool. I'm not thinking of starting my own company or anything like that, but I'm interested in the whole process of going from being a player to building necks and stuff yourself. I'm just a college-loan away from getting started (hee hee).
  4. I got a Squier Bullet at the pawnshop as a fill-in guitar after my car was stolen with all of my equipment in it. It hella sux. Avoid these like the plague. I heard someone once advise beginners to get a good quality guitar to start out with. Then, if playing doesn't work out (losing interest, etc.) at least there'll be some resale value to it. If you have to go cheap, there are squier strats floating around pawnshops all over the country for around a hunndred bucks. They ain't great, but they're not bad for that kind of money.
  5. Yer right, he is underrated.. (I'm a dinosaur, too) A buddy of mine's band opened for BOC on a club gig about ten years back, and they were cool. It's kind of bittersweet to see a band that once filled arenas playing in a club for about 200 people though.
  6. Thats the question you asked. You want a description? or don't you think it would be easier to find out for yourself, ie. go to your local music store and plug a stock tele into a Fender Twin. I told you what MY telecaster sounds like but I doubt my answer (or anyone's, for that matter) would do you any good anyway. Actually, that was the point of the whole discussion, prior to the technical qustions which were kindly answered. The question being, which tele, given all of the pickup options fender offers. Sheesh, what a can of worms...
  7. yeah, they sell the first act guitars at wal mart, and I noticed a little display with GHS strings, too! That's here in knoxville, but I would imagine that all wal marts have the same stock. Damn, 40 miles? you must be waaaay out in the country!
  8. I like it. I'm also interested in what software, processing, guitars, etc you used. It sounds like good old Mercyful Fate to me. I had 'Don't Break the Oath' and 'Melissa' on vinyl back in the day. Do you have a singer who can shriek like the King? oh, by the way, the only thing I would do to the mix so far is to bring up the level of the bass drum, if possible. Small quibble, though.
  9. I was thinking about a strat-stlye body, but I'd really like a 24 fret neck. I'm aiming at something like the 80's era Jacksons, or my old washburn. I was figuring on a HSS type of arrangement, but I'd probably want to put stacked humbuckers in the single coil slots. I do a lot of playing into my computer, and I pick up a lot of hum from the computer monitor. I'm looking for a lot of versatility. In my band we do a wide variety of things, from STP type grunge to really clean type stuff like CHilli Peppers. A tremolo system would be cool, too. I took your hint and looked at the carvin site, and their bodies looked cool. Do you know how well the Wilkinson trem systems work? All of the routing for a floyd rose seems like a lot of work. thanks
  10. If you match the polarity of the neck pickup and bridge pickups, and then put the middle pickup out of phase, when you have the selector set to run both the neck and middle pickups together, they will act like a humbucker (i.e) noise cancelling. At least, that's the way my strat was wired. I'm not sure about how the bridge humbucker and the single coil in the middle position would interact, though. I've only wired a few guitars. Hope this helps.
  11. If I had the answers to my own questions, I wouldn't have asked any
  12. I knew enough to know what I didn't know, didn't I? As regards pickup configs.. there are apparently 4 different ones rather than the three I thought there were.. as regards neck overhang.. well I found that info here.. as regards helpful info.. I found that here too. As regards the philosophical question, "what is the tele sound, anyway, it was a philosophical question, wasn't it? All apologies to the purists, but the various different pickup configs have been around since at least '72 (see fender website). Marksound's post seemed a little harsh, so I said so. Since he offered me some valuable info in regard to another post, I don't think he took it personally. And since the info from Mickguard solved my problem and I gave him due credit and thanks for his input, I fail to see what your beef is.
  13. Ahhh, yes...brings back memories.. I can almost smell the bongwater
  14. Try making one that looks like a big pot leaf! I bet you can find a zillion high school students who could draw you one!
  15. What? You don't like Britney Fox!!??? Next you'll be knockin' C.C. Deville!!
  16. Here's a question: If I buy a pre-drilled/routed body, does it matter what size neck I put on? Like 21,22, or 24 fret, or will they all work?
  17. +1 for JB Stuff like this is great...I love a the personality and distinctive style of a Beck or Hendrix (love the solo in "Wind Crys Mary", lots to learn from in this one for solo construction) or Knophler, you really have to admire someone with a voice on the guitar... But every now and again a solo comes out like that one and heaps of others that really cut through and stir the soloing impulses... I also like some simple lead lines that really suit the song though not so much a "solo"...things like the Pretender's "Back on the Chain Gang", and older stuff with Honeyman-Scott was nicely done... I like the solos in some of Prince's stuff..."Coat of Pink Cashmere" is pretty cool, the solo plays off with a full orchestra, pretty darn cool. He's quite a good guitar player and can afford great bands too... I've been listening to some of Roy Buchannan's stuff again lately..."The Messiah will come again" can bring a chill up your spine (if you ignore the spoken word part at the beginning)... I really liked the Bluesbreaker's "beano album" with Eric Clapton...if you want to know what the hype is about this player, check out this album made when he was only 21...simply amazing...Defined the Les Paul/Marshall sound... As well as Blues, I also like the Surf sound...often under-rated, they make great jamming songs and they are not so easy to write as you may think, even with it's distinctive formula (fender/reverb/double picking riffs and such)... New bands like the Merman and especially Slacktone are taking it to another level with some fantastic and difficult stuff... You got to admire some of the shredders, especially Vai (Sisters is my fav I'd say) and Satch...but sometimes they can get a little gymnastic, almost stunt guitar...simple stuff can be just as hard to play... One off the wall guitarist that I like is Alan Holdsworth...simply amazing and different from anything else, speed, technique and an incredible tonal vision...just don't expect your girlfriend to understand it So many great guitar players...I wonder how many people really dig their own playing...I have heard tapes of my stuff from years ago that I really liked, is that wrong? pete liking your own stuff is totally wrong and you should go now and punish yourself, repeatedly..LOL I play around with cakewalk here at home, and I've done some things I thought were pretty cool too (but don't tell anyone!)
  18. Thanks for the Info. Never even thought of Carvin. There stuff is really cool. I figured it would be a good way to start, building a parts guitar, rather than going whole hog and due to inexperience and ineptitude ending up with an expensive monstrosity. Teles Rule
  19. I like d'addario xls. There is a good thing to be said for GHS strings, though... you can get 'em at Wal-Mart! I am also in the can't really tell too much difference between companies. When I played ernie balls, I broke a lot of them, especially the wound strings. Must be a slightly thinner core or something. My brother swears by those elixirs.. (forget who makes 'em). he tried these black ones, with a plastic coating, and hateds them. I used to use the ones which started at .009 and then went up to .046 (skinny top heavy bottom), but since I got my tele, I've been using regular .010s. It is strange, but with a better guitar, I can use a slightly heavier set. If you use a low tuning heavier would be better due to less tension, as the others have said. Heck, at $3.50-7.00 per set (US) they're cheap enough to experiment a bit.
  20. Thanks for answering. I figure that it'll be expensive compared to the type of guitars which I've been playing..the best one I've ever owned is my Highway One tele, which I've only had for a short while. But I've always wanted to start from just parts. A pre routed body and a neck with nut and frets already there would be a big help. Imagine all the time these guys spend on measuring and such to layout a guitar body so that the bridge is in the right place, neck aligned, etc. I would hate to mess up a beautiful piece of wood by putting the holes in the wrong places! Some of the work here is really beautiful. Thanks again!
  21. The folks suggesting a Kahler have an idea worth considering. Are you admant about the floyd? I had a Les Paul back in the 80s which I had a kahler installed on and it worked great. I also had a BC Rich which came with a kahler stock. They both worked real well. I thought they stayed in tune a little better than the floyds which were available at the time, too. I had a floyd rose installed on an Ibanez strat copy (there was already a spring cavity, so I figured what the heck, seems like less trouble. The floyd was a little stiffer, but I liked it too. All things being equal, the fact that there'd be a lot less routing to install a stud-mounted kahler makes it seem like an obvious alternative.
  22. DO Soundgarden and Alice in Chains fall into Modern Mainstream rock, too? They are cool, as regards the gargling with razorblades and hydroflouric acid, right on.. although I do think Pantera and Down have a certain charm.. Hammerfall are pretty cool too..
  23. re: Albert Collins... I stand corrected.
  24. Marty Friedman did some tasty stuff with megadeth Jeff Beck is always cool David Gilmour pretty much all of animals.. Gary Moore- Shapes of Things The Crush of Love- satriani Watermelon in Easter Hay- Frank Zappa
