  1. ok so i went to take a look at it today. When the guy went to plug it in and turn it on it was actually working. The signal was a little crackley on the distortion but otherwise wasnt bad at all. I looked around the back and one of the power tubes was out. Even i know how to fix that. The guy said he'd still do it for 100 since i came all the way out there.Usually these go for 350-450 used. Its not a bad amp at all. all hail craigslist
  2. I'm looking into buying a new 212 carvin mts from my friend who's selling it after 3-4 years of use. Its a great sounding amp if you've ever played one and he decided he wanted to get rid of it for $100. Of course we don't live in a world where good things like that happen without a catch... the problem is that when he was playing it he said there was a loud popping sound and now the amp doesn't get power. Wiring and electronics is my weakest area and its even worse when it comes to amps so i'm not sure what happened to the amp itself. Based on the description what do you think is wrong with it? Would it be worth it/cost effective to get it for $100 and then pay for the repair on top of it? There are others around for 400-450 online and through craigslist
  3. whats good, I'm about to start a lapsteel project that includes giving it to my art-major friend to paint some crazy stuff on it. He's going to be doing this with the standard brush some i'm concerned about the levelness once it drys and how it will affect the clear coat going on top of it. Which paint would you recommend for this kind of task? which will ultimately provide a smoother, more professional looking finish? I've not decided on the type of clear i want on it. I'm willing to adjust just so it can work well with the paint underneath. -mps
  4. whats up pg, I'm about to start on an electric lapsteel build (3rd build, 1st slide). I'm making it out of a single solid piece of maple with 2 mini HB and most likely a slotted peghead. I've almost got the entire master template set up already except i haven't decided on a bridge yet. I (being a poor college student) am on a tight budget and the only spare bridge i have is a wrap around tune-o-matic with individual adjusting saddles and a 12" radius(think its called a badass). I know that the strings of a lapsteel are suppose to be flat but would the combination of the bridge and a flat nut be sufficient, and would the slight compound radius really affect playability that much? I've heard of people filing down the slots in the bridge to compensate for the radius but i'm afraid to do that as my metal files aren't up to par and i'm afraid of string breakage from a bad file job. It should be noted that i'm doing this as a quick project just so i can have my art major friend paint something cool on it. I don't intend for it to functionally be a masterpiece but i do want a playable instrument i can learn slide on. -mps
  5. PURPLE... IS... THE... BEST!!! Seriously, that thing is sweet.
  6. I like natural too haha. I originally dyed it blue but had some slight imperfections that were eating away at me. The maple looked awesome in blue but i didn't want to have to deal with sanding everything down bear again and i was in a purple mood so i took the plunge and painted it a solid color. I think it's a waste of a good piece of quilted maple but i bought it for 8 bucks just to add some thickness to the thinner piece of oak i used for the body so i don't feel that bad.
  7. I've had these projects going for quite a while now but never seem to be working on them. They're both almost done and should be finished up in the next few weeks. The builds arn't that clean seeing as they are my first ever woodworking projects and i'm not made of tools or money First: Neck Thru Explorer with laminated Padauk and Sapele wings with a cherry neck, ebony fb, and quilted maple pickguard. I got all the part of of Ebay. The tuners are Wilkinson double locks, tune-o-matic roller bridge, turquoise dots, electronics are yet to come after the finish. The neck is really thin, so thin that i thought it would bow uncontrollably so i strung it up to make sure it was ok and so far after 2 months nothing is wrong. For the finish i was planning on going with Minwax wipe on poly, i have yet to finished or even rough sand so it looks really messy. The pickups are whatever i could get for free or cheap. The bridge is a Seymour Duncan JB from a long time ago that a friend donated to me and the bridge is a no name alnico hum that surprising isn't bad for 15 buck. For the electronics i'm going to go for a 3 way selector and 1 tone 1 volume. The frets are rough at best cause it's my first fret job but they arn't too bad. The nut is a preslotted and shaped graphite one that i bought at guitarcenter and shimmed with maple veneer. The body has a tummy-cut to make it more comfortable. I basically spokeshaved until it felt good in playing position. I really like it despite the poor craftsmenship. It feels solid and is lightning fast, the strings are right down on the neck and is good for speedmetal and hardcore. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/a...ar/IMG_0044.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/a...ar/IMG_0045.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/a...ar/IMG_0046.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/a...ar/IMG_0047.jpg Next: Semi Hollow Les Paul Double Cut This is my first build being refinished. It's an oak body, quilted maple top (i got it cheap so don't freak about the solid colors) with a cherry and walnut neck with an ebony fb and an EIR headstock veneer. The cambering is made up of a left, right and small center chamber. I routed it using a drill press and chisel cause i didn't have a router then. Idk what pickups i'm using yet but i do have gold gotoh tuners, a gotoh adjustable fixed bridge. It's going to have a 3 way selector and 1 tone 1 volume. The neck is like an LP's but a tad thinner. I really like the neck. The nut i'm putting on it is a roller. I strung it up a few months ago and it played just fine. It was finished in a thick tung oil/poly blend and was dyed blue. It looked cool but the quality wasn't that good. I decided to refinish it in Krylon purple with metallic gold rose that i made using a stencil that i also made. I really like purple guitars. As you guys can see the quality isn't too hot but i was 15 when i started it and had no prior woodworking experience. All the imperfections will pretty much be covered up so it should look decent. I think in the future i may remake it cause i've gotten a lot better haha. I think i might have left out some important details so if you have any questions just ask. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/a...ar/IMG_0054.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/a...ar/IMG_0048.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/a...ar/IMG_0050.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/a...ar/IMG_0052.jpg
  8. Can someone post pictures of their finished product? I'd like to see how it works out.
  9. Thanks for the replies guys. I'm diggin them all. Dean- The gold bass looks interesting and very logical when it comes to comfort without looking like everything else. I dig it but it just seems like it should be a bass and not a guitar (at least a fretted 6 string). Avdekan- That thing is sick. I love the design cause its different but not too radical. It looks like it has exactly what i want when it comes to the cutaways. The only thing i would change if i were to attempt it is the back area behind the bridge wouldn't be cut out as much. I'm really considering a design like that. It looks like you did a great job with it. It looks ridiculously clean and well built. What kind of finish did you use? Ae3- The horus is sweet. I love the design i don't think i'd need all those frets but it would be an added perk. I think i'd go with a different headstock. Caparisons are boss cause KSE plays them.
  10. Hey i remember that! That thing is amazing. Explorers are pretty awesome for playability as well as a cool shape, but the only problem is I just built one and want something fresh. Is that bloodwood fb btw? I figured out it's actually the bulky heel on single cutaway types that really restricts my access to the upper area. I' guess i'm looking for double cutaway type designs or ones that have a low profile heel. I'm not a fan of v's cause i can't play them sitting down. What are some crazy dc designs?
  11. I'm going to be starting a new build soon and its going made for playing fast. I need a design with extremely easy access to the upper frets (with 1 hum in the bridge). Even more so then one of those Jackson or Schecter "Extreme Axcess" features. The problem is i suck at designing something that is aesthetically pleasing that incorporates these features. Do you guys know of any designs that look good and are ridiculously ergonomic with the upper fret access?
  12. Dude, that guitar is boss. It looks so nice. I really want to try something like that only with rings for the pickups and a non-strat trem.
  13. Alright. So i'm trying to assemble a descent sounding, hopefully not too complicated, and above all, cheap rig to play through. It's mostly going to be used to play clubs and small outdoor shows at the very most. I'm not exactly made of money, i need this to be hopefully under but probably + or - $1000. I really like a diversity of sounds and effects to be available. For size and power i'm looking for a stack system at around 100w. For the effects i was seriously considering Guitar Rig by Native Intruments (link @ bottom) with the floorboard but then abandoned the idea when I found out that it needed a computer to run even a live set up (and I don't have a portable one or want to invest in one). I need something with a large diversity of good quality sounds and effects that can be programed with ease. Does anyone recommend anything? For the amp i was looking into a sort of cheap solid state or the $400 Peavey windsor tube stack, basically something like a blank but relitively powerful slate to lay effects and modeling on top of it seeing that the best sounds for the budget come from modeling programs. I've looked into Line 6 Spider II and III amps and i'm not a fan of them. I'm kind of rambling here so i'll shorten everything... What is a descent modeling program like NI's Guitar Rig or an FX board or whatever that is under $500? And Is it a good idea to get a cheap powerful solid state amp and lay effects down over top of it? If so what's a good one/brand to get? link to Native Instruments Guitar Rig: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/produ...tion?sku=702973
  14. I saw someone a few months back that converted a Gibson LP vintage mahogany (the one with no finish) into a sunset burst LP standard. That thing was sweet and looked just like the real thing. Great customization.
  15. I don't know if this is what you're looking for cause it's more rhythm oriented but it's still got some lead elements to it. These guys are made up of the remnants of The Darkness. I dig it. The ending is so sweet.
  16. I DIG. end of story. How does it feel to play on fanned frets? I never had but i know you have on your last build (which was sweet btw).
  17. You got my vote! Also you should try spokeshaves and surforms. They make everything soo much easier.
  18. that's awesome!!! How did you carve all the bevels? Rasp? And did you carve the neck joint with the neck attached or unattached to the body? GOTM!
  19. 5 months well spent man! That looks great and the inlay is sick!
  20. I saw a while ago that someone was using a bandsaw for the belly-cut and then sanded it smooth. It looked good and easy to me.
  21. I'm split. If you can salvage the top like Xanthus said i would definatly go with super thin. Another idea which i think would be really cool would be to make it a semihollow with some sweet f-holes on the sides. That would be sick and you wouldn't lose any large amounts of wood like the super thin. If you're not into f-holes though i would vote for superthin
  22. i tried doing the same thing by slotting with a table saw but that didn't work out. Now that i have a bandsaw now i think it just might work. Thanks for rekindleing the idea!
  23. that looks sweet with the lp. Explorer one would look better if it was rosewood mahogany. Where did you happen to get that LP neck? Personal or ebay or w/e?
