  1. That Explorer is so awesome I did not even have to think before voting. The finish, the binding, the cool trussrod cover and inlay, etc. speak for the attention to detail that went into this guitar. Impressive work: I would buy it without hesitating if it plays as nice at it looks. That Ukele looks cool as well: I am really curious how such a thing plays and sounds....
  2. I never worked with mahagony, but with Korina(Limba). Therefore I cannot compare the too. What I can say though is that I was surprised who soft limba is, because it is considered a hardwood. It is very easily workable due to it's softness: you can change it's shape in minutes. But you have to be a little carful to not rip out chunks with a router. It is still very stable and sounds great though.
  3. Most jmrentis is spot on. I did a JEM countored heel and I used a rasp and sandpaper for the job. You won't find detailed dimensions anywhere on the net as far as I know. I just went be feel and the pictures URL=http://www.jemsite.com/axes/htm_features/neckjoint.htm]here. If your body has the standard JEM thickness of 45mm it should be quite obvious how much wood take off approximately by looking at these pictures. I thought about how to do the joint too much at the time....simply do it it's very simple really....just go by feel and these pictures.... Good luck, Marcel!
  4. Thanks for the answers guys! I will simply put some foam behind the PU's. That should stabilize them enough to not start vibrating. Could have had that idea myself....lol! P.s.: Concerning the proper name for that mounting method: To me this is at least more direct mounted than a pickguard or pu rings!
  5. Hi! I just realized that when playing louder with my custom 7-string I get terrible feedback even if I am holding the strings. After a little research I found out that it's the PU resonating. The whole pickup is vibrating, because it is not mounted fix enough. My PU's are direct mounted: Two screws directly in the wood with a spring in between the wood and the PU. The springs are alredy quite strong. Do I need stronger springs or is this mounting method simply a bad idee? How I else could I direct mount the PU's and still have them height adjustable? Thanks, Marcel!
  6. I have big respect for those who join the army of any country. These people are willing to sacrifice their one live for the security of their fellow citizens. Unfortunately every country needs to have an army, so I cannot understand the people who are opposed to others serving. I mean who will protect them if they become victim of an unjustified war? That said I agree with AlexVDL. I don't want this to turn into a political discussion. And everyone should be allowed to have his own opinion. However in your case I would do alot of OBJECTIVE political research before joining. Fighting for Bush's plans is not neccesseralily in line with being a brave soldier fighting for a just cause. If you stand behind his decisions and want to fight for them so be it. But really look into that before later putting your life in danger for something which is not true to your beliefs. It always is a pain to see how alot of soldiers in the past and present were instrumentalized by their gouvernements to lose their live for something they were stronly opposed to. I imagine this to be a REALLY painful situation to be in....
  7. Hehe....I am proof of the opposite to most statements you made. I am a fan of the shreddier DT stuff and still love this CD. I consider JLB an EXCELLENT singer and like the Children of Bodom vocals very much.
  8. Excellent work dude! Do you do more "common" stuff like a simple set of sharkfin inlays as well? Or a Ibanez Jem vine? Where can I see prices?
  9. Sure....no flame war! I want this to be an interesting discussion! Sorry if my post sounded agressive. I was just interested because many old DT fans always diss newer albums and then have no arguments. If you don't like an album no problem. But calling it crap when it is in fact definately an album which is about average compared to everything out there is very wrong in my opinion. It is not my favorite DT album , but it's still damn awesome and miles away from crap if you are somewhat objective.
  10. Interesting discussion and interesting answers! Then why the hell do you call Ocatavarium crap? It is the most song-driven album by DT ever. Nearly no solos or insanely technical passages. Just great songs.
  11. @terrax: I simpy don't understand this attitude. I mean Awake was definately an excellent album. BUT why do people always bash bands which change their style and progress? Do you want to hear the same old stuff over and over again? DT progressed in a great way. I respect bands who are able to deliver something new on every record without losing their trademark sound. To me this is the biggest achievement a band can make.... And both of the last releases are my favorite CD's. Ever thought about what would happen if they release a Images&Words NOW? Times have changed....what was a great progressive masterpiece at the time would be ridiculed as a cheesy 80ies prog cd today.... What is so bad about the new CD's? They are very unique and above most other bands in terms of talent....
  12. Man....do you know Dream Theater at all? This is the third song in a story about Mike Portnoys alcoholism and I think it's very cool that they quote each other. Especially the way they do it: They never directly quote it but usually change the quote somehow. Then sorry for accusing you! Hehe....the real CD's cover has a proper rope for each ball.
  13. Buy the original cd before jumping to wrong conclusions!
  14. That's very true! Outisde of DT I would not prefer that style of singing. I have to add that his latest Solo Album "Elements of Persuasion" is great to. The vocals are even better there than in most DT songs and it's more metal than DT. You have to check it out if you don't know it yet. I think it's awesome!
  15. Dream Theater is one of my favorite if not my favorite band. I have to disagree with the "shred band" thing. They are technically one of the best bands on the planet, but they always write great songs and always avoided un-melodic and stupid shred stuff like many of the neo-classic shredders. Their songs always contain great and memorable memories and the solo's are very melodic and well-thought out usually. Additionally they are one of the few prog bands who succeed in fusing the most complex song structures and crazy parts to songs that are still appealing and nice to listen to and not a batch of unconnected parts. Sure there is alot of playing that many might consider "showing off", but they never do it out of context or without originality. Yngwie for example shows off in every song, but as he usually plays the same stuff in every solo, so it does not enhance the songs and is kinda boring. Not falling into that trap is what makes DT so great among other things. P.s.: No Yngwie discussion please. He IS a great player and I love many of his earlier songs, but his later solos/songs lack a certain degree of originality and often sound so uninspired.
  16. Hmm....for Strats, Wolfgangs, etc. you can find that info online....for the ibanez 6-strings as well. But that damn 7-string neck....
  17. Is it only prone to cracking, etc. during drying or even afterwards? The reason I ask in such detail is that I have a very nice birdseye maple piece in my ebay watch list. It has outstanding figure and perfect dimensions for a neck. It is heartwood however....
  18. Thanks alot! Exactly what I wanted to know. When you say maple heartwood is not as stable as it's sapwood do you mean: 1) it is not as hard 2) it is prone to warping, etc.
  19. Hi! I never used hard or sapwood for a neck. Additionally being no native speaker I don't know what sapwood exactly means. I suspect it's the same. I remember heaving read somewhere that heartwood is very unstable and has a tendency to twist. This is not what you want of a neck to happen. Any opinions on this one? Thanks, Marcel!
  20. Hehehe....thanks again! You both are right! It's just that it would have been easier to get some drawings of the back shape online....anyway I'll bug the shops now....hehe
  21. Thanks for the answers! @RGGR: I knew that one already as you suspected. Unfortunately there is no info on the back shape. Which is what I am mainly looking for.... @erikbojerik: Maybe I should simply give it a try. I don't think they would not allow me to take measurements, but when they see me approaching their most expensive guitars with calipers, countour gauges, etc. they will stop me in fear of damage to their guitars....
  22. Hello! As some of you know I am planning to build a new neck for my 7-string, this time using different woods for a different sound. I realized that I like the Ibanez Wizard 7-string neck very much. My problem is that I cannot find proper specifications and dimensions of that neck. The Universe and K-7 are avaiable in stores here, but I doubt they would let me take measurements. Therefore I would prefer to find the info I need online. I know most things like scale, radius, width at nut, etc. What I want to know: 1. What fretwire do they use? On the Ibanez site they only write "Jumbo" not very precise.... 2. Are there drawings of the back shape available somewhere?(This is the most important question for me) 3. Which height over the fingerboard do the locking nut slots have? 4. Is there a REALLY cheap Ibanez 7-string available which uses the same neck shape? Maybe I could buy one and resell it after copying the neck.... Thanks in advance for any help, Marcel!
  23. Sounds good! Thanks for the info from everyone! I guess this summer I'll try to lrean finishing....
  24. Thanks again for the info Setch! Sounds good....I guess I'll have to check that stuff out. Is it hard to avoid runs with that stuff? That's my biggest concern: I know how hard it is to spray simple objects if you have no expirience, let alone guitars! And with Nitro and other highly fluid laquers, runs and drops in the finish are VERY hard to get out/right if not nearly impossible. The always stay visible to some degree and you need countless coats to cover them up. I imagine that Rustin stuff is a very thick and viscid layuer and therefore easier to get a good finish with....am I right here? I imagine it a little like poly, where you put a fat layer one and now matter how bad it is sprayed it's not difficult to dans everything out....
  25. Thanks for your post Setch! You posts sounds as if this is the perfect finish for getting a nice glossy finish as a beginner! I have proper spraying equipment, etc. but I never dared to finish a guitar yet. Especially not my custom builds I invested months in. Do you think this is an easily solution for getting a high quality pro finish? Or more a good option for an okay finish?
