  1. Yeah I know what you mean by the mud thing. I would of course try practicing first. I like the grey fades but the body I am getting wont have a flame on it so it wouldnt look that great just being a grey to black fade, plus I like a little color, otherwise I would get bored by it So I dont know any other ideas you guys might have I am ears. But once I do a practice on some wood I will show you guys and see if you like it.
  2. I have been sitting here attempting to think of finishes on my next build(because I get anxious)I have been even looking at color charts, along with already existing guitars. Now I am thinking, I have always wanted something with grey stained wood, but I dont know what other colors(other than black)would go with it?, because I wouldnt want all grey that is too dull. I would like a fade or sunburst and I was thinking maybe a red/sherry color in the middle faded to grey. The red would be a real deep wine type color. Do you guys think that this would be at all a good color combination? And the guitar I am planning it on would have a top seperated with binding(like a Les Paul)...so I dont know what would be a good color for the rest of the body...other than more grey maybe accented with some more deep red or even some black to give a vintagy look? Any suggestions? I could try something on photoshop but I am not to sure how to do it(I can use photoshop just not sure how to do a sunburst on existing guitar)... Thanks
  3. Why do you want to use house paint instead of an automotive paint or a paint that would work better? I doubt you would ever want to use an oil based house paint, because I am sure a lacquer or poly would not make good contact with it. Using a normal house paint and you have to possibility of getting brush strokes, and I don't know how well lacquer or poly would stick to that, you always have to figure out whether or not the paint you use will work with the poly or lacquer you plan to use.
  4. I know you have to strip(of course)I have done guitars before but my main questions were if people had cool ideas of transparent finishes, and how they get that antique look on some telecasters(whether the wood is dyed or simply the lacquer is). I hope that didn't come off as a dick either. For some reason I just did a relative easy question in a long way. But thank you for answering my veneer top question.
  5. Well this is sort of generic question but not quite. Well I am getting a bass body that resembles a Les Paul style body. I am not sure what type of wood it is, I want to keep a wood look. I am planning to make it look very similar to a Les Paul Standard. I dont know about the finish though. I would like to put a flame /quilted maple top on it but I dont want to use a veneer, is there an easy to somewhat easy way to put on a thicker top to an already built guitar? Or would I have to cut off some on the top to add the approximate 1/4" top? Also what is the best way of going about getting the "cherry burst" that the typical Les Paul has? Do they use dyes in a spray gun or would it be possible to do it by hand. Also if I stick with the wood the guitar has what would be the best finish(not paint or anything that covers the wood I am a natural kind of guy)in your guy's opinion, if you could maybe give me a few ideas with pictures, if possible. Also I was thinking that yellow kind of vintage look that are common on telecasters. How exactly do I go about achieving this? Would I simple put a yellow tinted lacquer on top of bare wood? Or would I first dye the wood vintagy(if you could tell me what colors to use for "vintagy")and then lacquer it with clear lacquer? Or would it still be tinted? Thanks for your imput
  6. Sounds good. I dont have the money or equipment right now to get very far but when I do I will post it.
  7. Yeah I was thinkin about a bigsby...That hole is weird because it is in the center and it seems the spring mammy on the original one was to the side so I dont know. I was actually maybe thinking of keeping the original finish(depending on the quality of the finish)and just rebuffing it. I will have to see when I get it.
  8. It is actually kind of funny...The color accepted in that crease, but none the less it is a crease(you can slightly feel a divot)and while I was buffing it with white compound it kind of got stuck up in there and I haven't yet got a Q-Tip with some water and clean out that area. So it is a crease that I don't like but it did accept the color, it is much smaller than is perceived on here. Thank you for the input though.
  9. What type of pick guard do you like? What does this one lack?(I hope I don't sound offensive) And yes it is a veneer top which I did tape and it has a relative smooth crease. But that is where most of the problems lay, it accidentally got wet and I had to iron it flat and do some other stuff. And I believe i used polyurethane out of a rattle can(At the point I had not purchased a spray gun but plan to on next build) The pick guard is actually a creme color (created by shoe polish I couldn't find an already creme colored one) I know the picture almost makes it yellow/brown but it is more cremey(if thats a word) Thanks for replies.
  10. Well I got a hold of a camera and decided to move this topic to a place where I am supposed to show pics. So here it is. I want to take some more pictures with more natural light but it is 1:20 in the morning so I will have to do with what I have. This is my first build so I would like all the feedback I can get, good and especially some bad, because I know it is there . Hopefully that way I will learn, or at least deal with it.
  11. Sounds good. The only thing is it looked almost as they were routed for a specific "wammy" type bridge...But like I said all I can see is pictures, so i dont know. But thanks for the advice now I won't worry about trying to make it "authentic".
  12. I dont mean this to be an up, but does no one know anything about these guitars I would really like to know anything about them...Thank you
  13. I recently bought an Eko Kadett body off of Ebay(I haven't yet received it though) I was wondering if anyone knows anything about these guitars other than the fact they were made in the 60's and in Italy. I would like to know what year exactly the body was made in, all the description says is "in the 60's". Is there any way I can tell by like a serial number or anything that is printed on the body? Also does anyone know where I can get parts for this guitar whether they are originals or remakes? Also does anyone know of wiring schematics I can find for this guitar? The one I ordered looks to be only a two pickup guitar and the other ones I have seen seem to be three...So I dont know what that means. Here is a link to the ebay site if you want to see a pictureLink to Ebay Thanks
  14. sounds good...I will get a hold of a camera and take some pictures
  15. I am going to start a project restoring some titan body I found on ebay that looks like a Les Paul, but it is a bass. I believe the pockets are routed for les paul style humbuckers...(I haven't acutally recieved the body yet) From what I can tell from the picture, tell me what you think? Link To Ebay My main question is where can I find bass humbuckers that have or will fit to a nickel case?(so that they will look like a Les Paul) Any will work but I would like a vintage sort, a real deep mellow sound is preferred. Thank you
  16. Oh ok I didn't know since he was a moderator and all(I didnt mean to sound rude). But on that note then I can try to get a few pics up if I can get a camera. What's the best way of going about getting pictures up one this thing?
  17. Sorry...I guess. I dont have a camera right now. Hence the no money. I can delete it if you want, I thought I would just say something about me getting done....
  18. Well as it says I am finally finished with my bass, not that I expect you guys to be too excited It took a long time, not that I was working on it constantly. But I started last winter sometime. It is a p-bass with DiMarzio pickups, a cream pickup, Crome pickup/bridge covers, and the color is a "done by hand" sunburt from yellow/red/brown. And it has a flamed maple top. There are a few annoying blemeshes I got from doing dumb stuff and not having the right equipment but oh well that stuff happens(especially when you are an 18 year old with no money ). I am also starting a new project soon, a type of Les Paul Bass thats fretless. Should be a good time, just have to start selling my plasma but I guess you have to wait six months after coming back from a foreign country. Only if I could get some gigs or something.
  19. Well I was sitting here thinking sometimes when you are not building a guitar it would be kind of fun to do little things, I guess you could call them crafts. So I learned how to knit a guitar strap...yes I am a guy and yes I know how to knit. But anyways my question is does anyone know or do any of these types of "crafts"? Things that are related to guitars? Like building a wierd instrument or a cracker box amp...Anything.
  20. Well now I have a question...Are you talking about binding around the outside of the guitar like a Les Paul right? Dont most people use a router? Or atleast thats what I thought? And are there any chisels recommended? If that is what i am supposed to use...
  21. So as I have been saying I am planning on a bass that looks just like a Les Paul but I am having troubles finding some humbucker bass pickups that would fit those chrome cases they use on Les Pauls...I am interested in a vintage sort of sound but also a good(not too pricey)all around pickup. Thanks
  22. Why would you say there is no demand for them? Do they not sound good at all or something or just people that play bass don't like things to sound crazy and "psychadelic" Haha
  23. So first I was just gonna make a Les Paul sort of look alike guitar now I am wanting to do a Les Paul look alike bass(because well I play bass and not guitar) but anywho I think it would be really cool to put a vibrato sort of thing on it like this Link but I can't find one for bass...I know there are tremolos but I dont want to router the necessarry pockets for one of those...So any ideas? Thanks
  24. I am guessing this would be the appropiate forum area for this. I am wanting to build a simple rectangle case for my base but would like a little direction. Would anyone happen to know some good sites or simply some suggestions? Like the thickness of wood and what to line it with(fabric and foam wise) I want to use Tweed fabric stuff on the outside...but otherwsie any suggestions I would much appreciate.
