  1. OK the recipe for a smooth solo tone and to make an impact. Your solo has to DOMINATE, there is nothing so pitiful as a solo that is getting drowned out by the band, whatever volume you were playing at before the lead break has to increase a lot when you are doing the widdly diddly stuff, you need a sound mixer that knows the songs or you need a second master volume (cranked) on your amp that is foot switchable. The second option is better because it injects more power amp gain that is going to give you a fatter smoother sound. The option of a switchable midi preamp as well as your tube amp can give you a whole swag of more solo tone options. Next is a good delay to add the overtones that inject harmony and emotion to the solo. Essential component (for parts of the solo, not the whole thing), speed, it adds exhilaration. Melody and unpredictability are also essential ingredients. Some of my favourite solos that tick these boxes, Megadeth - A Tout le Monde, KISS - Deuce, Metallica - Enter Sandman, Thin Lizzy - The Black Rose, Vain - Secrets, Backyard Babies - Making Enemies is Good, LA Guns - I Wanna Be Your Man.
  2. The next time 'you' have a pillow fight with your friend just pop a picture or seven on the Announcements board.
  3. Did you make that guitar Daniel? To use my favourite New Zealand expression it is choice bro. I really enjoyed listening to your clip, the tone was cool, I like the edge a Tubescreamer gives. My 2 cents worth is record over some backing tracks, or multitrack with a drum machine and a bass, or other musicians. It is good fun to play around with the different settings on the POD and try combinations with stomp boxes. Jimmy Page was one of those players that realised that while a guitar tone might not sound amazing by itself it could sound great when the other instruments are added in. Alternatively, just stick a mic in front of a tube amp, this works especially well in a small tiled bathroom. After recording effects on a software multitracker can do the job, here is an example, I have added some software delay to the solos to get a mix between Warren DiMartini and Tears For Fears on a backing track Round and Round
  4. It looks sharp in both senses of the word, I like the mini V trying to escape from the big V cutout.
  5. Fantastic headstock shape and the binding gives it that high end look.
  6. Hit the wrong button and ended up with a double post, now that I am here, what kind of music are you mainly playing?
  7. Yes Josh, things like bevels on the cutaway are extras that will not appeal to everyone. Like you, I dont see a pressing need for scooping extra chunks off the face of a cutaway. But I understand how some people like them. I couldn't deal without feeling a tune o matic under the heel of my right and using it for vibrato, while others don't feel any requirement for stuff like that. I guess the feel of the guitar is an individual choice thing. You can't go wrong with a Gibbo vee, it's all cutaway up there, so when you get a bit proximally curious, and do a run that ends with a screaming D on the 22nd fret on the skinny string, there's nothing to hold you back. You can go higher though, there's always the neck pick up that can be used as a fret, and there are not many guitars with the cutaway that far up
  8. Try playing the intro to Sweet Child O' Mine on a non cut away accoustic and you are just on the border of discomfort. Any further up and you need the cutaway. Are you are saying though that while a cutaway is essential for playing frets 19 + efficiently, that extra wood taken off a cutaway, such as a bevel is not needed?
  9. The software that Greg mentioned has a 7 day trial so it might be an idea to see if emulation can be done without any outboard gear. If it doesn't sound that good you can see on this forum a few gadgets that get a decent sound plugged straight into a recorder. Here's another one, it's vintage and rare, but if you ever see one, snap it up, The Boss Play Bus, it has a gain control, delay or chorus with depth and speed sliders, two phone outputs, a mic input, and an Aux input labeled "cassette in", this thing was made way before MP3s were even dreamt about. It will fit easily into your laptop pocket, and if your amp ever plays up, you can plug it straight into the PA and it sounds organic.
  10. I like the guitar, great health warning feature First cigar box I have seen with all 6 strings. Try tinypic.com to host your pics.
  11. Yes that site smells like a kipper There is lots of demo and some freeware recording software at this musicians network http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/MULTITRACK_RECORDING/ Had a go at Take it Off Click Here I used the "Metal Panel" setting on my Zoom amp modeler
  12. I am going to have a go at 'Take it Off' tomorrow, Allison Robertson is one of my favourite guitarists. I like her fusion of raawwk and thrash. Check out The Donnas playing the track on the TV show 'Rove'
  13. I tried it, worked fine on the second go
  14. Another option. Crisp, bulletproof, cheap as chips
  15. Watched the vid, good stuff Hopefully more projectguitarists will post their playing, it adds another dimension to this part of the forum. Cakwalk Guitar Tracks is real easy to use, it is just like an 8 track recorder on your computer.
  16. I used Cakewalk Guitar Tracks software on my laptop to import the backing track and then played along with the song. The guitar was plugged into a Pod that went into a Sound Blaster card. The Pod setting was press Tap Hold and turn the Amp Model to 9 O' clock, which gives you more gain than you can ever need.
  17. I like the site, guys (and the one girl in 14000+ projectguitar members) why not post your playing on a backing site on this thread. The version of Enter Sandman (before I got to it) is excellent, does this song have the best riff ever? Here is my murdered version Click Here Rock and Roll.
  18. AD100, that is rare. I found a picture of one here, cool gadget. Your right that analog and digital delays can be very different animals, I would recommend that anyone who is into effects not take an either or approach to delays, get one of each. Anyone tried the Behringer Vintage Time Machine that claims to sound like a tape echo?
  19. Analog Delay - warm, phat and spacey.
  20. What the Funk and Wagnell is a pentagram? I like the stars and circles.
  21. Now that is a choice piece of swamp ash When is the saw dust going to get made?
  22. G'Day GHV2, What are you going to repair and modify?
  23. My guess is from scratch. Excelent job The Truth, is Alex your given name?
