  1. I'm not even going to attempt to read that massacre of the english language :D

a radius is used to improve playability, theres a reason 99.9999% of guitars (bar classical) have them.....

Massacre? I've seen much worse on forums. For those who are TLDR, he wants to know if he can use a flat fretboard, which would work (like a classical)

The spelling in post one is 100% perfect and the only grammatical error is the 'i' is not capatilized. Jeez Borge, sensitive B)

Youse had beter nowt reed none of dah crap i post on satdee arvo otherize ya'd call it a bludbath :D

  2. The front end is great gear but you have got it plugged into a toy amplifier. You need to give that preamp and effects some grunt.

    Something like this

    marshall-el34.jpg

will stoke the engine coupled into something with at least 4 x 12 cones. The triaxes though is a fantastic start to a cool rig :D

  3. mcheck thi out...gotta give those guys credit...aw4some attitudes towards the fans...

UI would love to be ib that dudes place

That is fantastic isn't it, there are not many bands that would take the time to let a fan jam with them, that dude can play and he got a great story to tell that day.

  4. I was wondering if anyone would know what I was talking about, guess your ex was wrong :D

That's right about being carefull about what you post, I was just reading in Rolling Stone about a dude who posted some of the Chinese Democracy tracks and is facing jail time and a whopping fine.

Lars hasn't sued me for this post click here

I heard there is even a youtube vid where Lars says he likes hearing cover versions :D

Does anyone know if Metallica used Roland Jazz Chorus amps for the clean sounds on DM? I still have not heard an amp or sim get close to a JC120 for clean tones.

  5. I got home early from a trip to Pearl Beach and had a go at an old KISS classic, Strutter, this has all my favourite Frehley touches, the slightly gothic descending run, the fairly fast pentatonic trill and in the last solo getting the speed just up to the point where scales do not matter and you can play any damn note you like.

I have put it to a youtube slide show

or better quality audio only click here

  6. Hey Wes, I am shocked :D I thought we understood each other a bit better. I just like to hear people play, I don't care whether they are 'good' or not, it just gives me an insight into their musical influences. A way that humans can swap artistic expression across the globe. I have never picked on someone elses' playing, the thought of it kinda creeps me out. I would offer advice if I was asked for it, but I am very positive with my tips.

I do like Metallica but they would be about no 30 on my list of pet bands, my top four are Grinspoon, LA Guns, Kiss (first 4 albums and last album and Backyard Babies. I like your analogies but what is wrong with flirty girls? With a bit of skill they always transform into the second kind :D

  7. Maiden69 is right, a basswood guitar is slightly better than a guitar made out of cheese. As a first guitar choice you need to make the decision between the major three types of guitar,

a- no vibrato - eg a telecaster with no way to wobble the strings, or a wrap around bridge (for me purgatory)

b- parallel neck, therefore low string hight, wang bar vibrato, eg stratocaster

c- tune o matic with angled neck, great vibrato, eg Gibson style.

Then look in second hand shops, when you see one you like, look down the neck like you are sighting down the barrel of a gun. If the neck is badly, or twisted, bent you will easily see it, don't buy it. If the neck is straight and you like the feel and look of the guitar, buy it regardless of what it sounds like. If it sounds good don't do a thing, if it sounds crap, buy a good bridge pick up and swap it out. It will now sound fantastic if you made the right pup choice. Don't swap the neck pup it will always sound good. Happy new guitar day :D Rock and Roll.

  8. Yeah some bands do fall into a comfortable formula after a while, and when a band is all playing the same thing for the whole song it gets boring. I love counterpoint melodies, I'll see if I can find a good guitar rock example.

And because this is players corner not just critics corner I'd love to hear some more of the forum's members' guitar playing, so this is a call out to all the members, show us how it should be done and post some riffage :D.

  9. now wes and 99 percent of the forum is going to come post how they think they are sell outs and how the new album shouldnt be at #1, and crap like that.

    you asked for it. ;)

this has to be the most anti metallica place i have ever seen.

Don't worry if anyone says anything like that I will give them the stern and dissaproving emoticon B)

If you took the distortion and lyrics off and add gobs of reverb...it would make killer surf music B)

    :D I might try that myself :D

  10. Smooth Solo tone (in my world anyway)

Sey hello to your neck pickup and roll the tone down a bit.

Yep, good advice, Slash and Carlos would agree with that.

More stuff to try, look on the internet, buy the cheapest single coil pup you can find, it should have lots of buzz, put it in your guitar and play it through hot valves.

Double track your solo, pan it to 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock. Tap so it sounds like bagpipes. Create some digital weirdness on the second solo.

  11. OK the recipe for a smooth solo tone and to make an impact.

Your solo has to DOMINATE, there is nothing so pitiful as a solo that is getting drowned out by the band, whatever volume you were playing at before the lead break has to increase a lot when you are doing the widdly diddly stuff, you need a sound mixer that knows the songs or you need a second master volume (cranked) on your amp that is foot switchable. The second option is better because it injects more power amp gain that is going to give you a fatter smoother sound. The option of a switchable midi preamp as well as your tube amp can give you a whole swag of more solo tone options.

Next is a good delay to add the overtones that inject harmony and emotion to the solo.

Essential component (for parts of the solo, not the whole thing), speed, it adds exhilaration. Melody and unpredictability are also essential ingredients.

Some of my favourite solos that tick these boxes, Megadeth - A Tout le Monde, KISS - Deuce, Metallica - Enter Sandman, Thin Lizzy - The Black Rose, Vain - Secrets, Backyard Babies - Making Enemies is Good, LA Guns - I Wanna Be Your Man. :D
