  1. Hi there, im currently in the process of making a Randy Rhoads V style guitar. I have a few questions on paint and grain filler. Basically, my requirements are solid colours for the body (black with white pinstripes) and a neck that does not become "tacky" under the heat of things. Basically i have no specific requirements for the neck to be of any colour or anything, i'd just rather have a "slick" surface that is frictionless as possible under sweaty hand conditions! Body and paint questions: Right, i plan to use an acrylic lacquer for the body. When i brought my supplies i also got something called thixotropic filler for mahogany (the body and neck are mahogany), if i use this thixotropic filler to fill the wood will it be ok to use acrylic lacquer to paint the guitar? or are nasty reactions likely to occur? Also im from the uk and cant source Krylon acrylic lacquer which i've heard good things about but i have heard that Humbrol paints are distributors for them in the uk, now ive found this: http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/h/HUMJSP/ which is described as "acrylic resin formulation which is suitable for interior and exterior use", does the acrylic resin mean acrylic lacquer? if so it sounds very similar to the krylon interior/exterior range which several people appear to use and achieve good results with. If not does anybody from the uk have any other suggestions for obtainable brands of acrylic lacquer? Neck questions: Basically what are acrylic lacuer paints with acrylic clearcoats like to play as im not sure what my current guitars finishes are. Would an acrylic clearcoat be reasonably "slick" under hot conditions? If not does anybody have any suggestions for a suitable finish that would fulfill my requirements? Anyway thanks for reading this and any help! Haydn
  2. cheers guitarfrenzy, yeah ive cut the edges of the truss rod slot with a minature circular saw to the correct depth which should make the chiseling a bit eaiser. But yh i guess im gonna have to invest in a router at some stage and find someone with a bandsaw. May take a trip to my old wood working department at school! Haydn
  3. Hi there this is the makings of my Randy Rhoads guitar style neck neck so far. http://www.ofoto.com/BrowsePhotos.jsp?&col...=1&sort_order=0 Once ive chiseled out the truss rod cavity (as i dont have access to a router) what would you guys reccomend for using as an anchor piece for the truss rod? Also once ive fitted the truss rod and fretboard, as i dont have access to a bandsaw, all i can think of for shaping the neck ie the neck flare (nut to heal) if you will! not the actual shaping ive got spokeshaves for that, is to use my trusy beltsander! Any thoughts on this? Would that be adequate or it it asking for troble? Thanks all! Haydn
  4. Cheers people, thanks for all the replies. Didnt get the pedal eventually so not a problem anymore!! Haydn
  5. Hi, im hopefully buying a boss rv-2 reverb pedal, but this does not come with an adaptor, would this power supply work here are the specs (AC 600mA) Universal regulated power supply incorporating a 2m lead, fitted plug and six different detachable connection fittings. Offers variable voltage outputs of 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9V DC. Reversible polarity facility. Input: UK 230V Output: 1.5/3/4.5/6/7.5/9V Current: 600mA max Polarity: Switchable I have a boss ac power supply which could be used for this pedal but it's in use for another pedal, this supply is 200mA rather than 600mA. Basically could the power supply above be used to power the rv-2 pedal without damaging it? Cheers Haydn
  6. Only Rc planes at the moment, but that will change soon! I fly a limbo dancer, just cos it's so easy to chuck into a car and drive off to the airfield. Did used to race r/c cars but that proved costly!
  7. If I got the wrong angle I suppose i would just raise or lower the bridge. But I dont know how moveable the floyd up and down is because of the pivots on the mounting studs. But i'd try not to get the wrong neck angle! I plan to use a ebony fretboard on a mahogany neck so hopefully there wouldn't be too much movement or neck bow in that
  8. Thanks a lot for the replies, Yh 86barettaguy i seem to remember calculating the neck angle out a while back and got the same 2 or 3 degrees so it cant be far wrong! Cheers
  9. Ok so he hates his esp guitars my mistake, people reply quickly on this forum!
  10. It's gonna be a glued/set neck at the moment, I dont like the idea of having to glue wings to the neck it'self, one more thing to go wrong for a first attempt!! I heard Hammett liked his gibson v's so much he got esp to make him some, I agree cool guitars! Thanks Digideus, know I know it's not a mad idea to improvise a bit with clamps and stuff I knew it was plausible!
  11. Hi everyone, yet another new member, well iv’e actually been lurking for a few days now. Anyway, thought Id make the most of it and ask a few questions! Here goes, I plan to build a Randy Rhoads style guitar in the summer a few months off here yet (uk) with a Floyd Rose. I’ve drawn my plans with the help of Hiscock’s building guitar book but does anyone know what the string and saddle height is of a recessed and non recessed Floyd bridge is from the body? As I have not yet worked out if I need any neck angle. I plan to have a 24 fret neck can anyone help me on the size of a truss rod? I’ve read along the lines of 18” is suitable,is it possible to epoxy the end into place (a stupid question there I think but I don’t know!) Also, is there a cheaper alternative to a fret file and fret cutting nippers? Also has anyone any experience of improvising using clamps, as I don’t want to buy lots of clamps I was thinking two bits of threaded rod and two bits of something in between! I’ve seen some other members on this forum are also building a RR style guitar such as Custom Curtis, and rhoads 56’s,whos inlays look very impressive, on the plan for custom rhoads thread. I saw the plans for the rhoads style guitar are in dxf format I cant open this file I’ve downloaded Microsoft inviso? But this wont open the file, can anyone suggest something that will open the file? Anyway thanks for any help, and hello to everyone, im sure I’ll have lots more questions because of only a limited experience in building, one r/c plane to be precise!, but as uni gets in the way I’ll have to wait a few months to start my project!
