  2. thanks for the offers, but i already have to place a stew mac order, so i will get ripped off by them, as it is easier for me. Im not going to cut out the actually gibson logo in pearl, but mearly in the pearl block, then do the computer decal and laquer approach. now if someone has some gold les paul hardware they want to sell me...
  3. Hey Litchfield, i sent you an email about the tops, i was looking to get a quilt, but a more not so perfect quilt, maybe with some colour in it, kinda like the wood you have called "quilt" anyways, drop me a line, lowe9@rogers.com
  4. i need one tiny piece of pearl, just enough to do the Gibson logo on the top of a headstock. if any one has a small off cut or something, send me an email at rite_of_chaos@hotmail.com
  5. Living in canada, it is impossible for me to order nitro laquer off stew mac or reranch, as flamable items cannot be brought across the border. that leaves me with stuff i can find here. I found this one clear laquer sold at Rona\Lansing (canadian hardware store) called WATCO Clear Lauqer, Gloss. Im not sure what kind of laquer it is. I don't want a water based laquer. However, certain things about lead me to beleive it might be nitro. With Giant letters on the front is says "EXTREME DANGER" with the flamable, explosive and poison symbols. it was my understanding that water based laquer was not nearly as hazardous as nitro laquer. On the back of the can, it says it contains :ethyl acetate, propane, n-butly acetate, n-butane, acetone, methyl, ethyl ketone, toluene and isopropyl alcohol. bunch of nasty stuff which leads me to beleive it might be nitro. Anyone have any Idea what kind of laquer WATCO really is? Its is manufactured in the states by TREMCO, an RPM company. Here is the website i found for it http://www.varathane.com/product.asp?frm_p...ct_id=116&SBL=1 thanks for any and all help.
  6. I don't know if this is any help to you, but today conn is a major manufacture of brass instruments, particulary lower end ones. They also manufacture woodwinds under a diffrent name.
  7. its a straight restore, nothing new being done to it, except a new neck pickup, as it was lacking one when i got it. most of the damage is on the headstock, it needs to binding, a new custom triangle inlay, and its missing a headstock "ear". the neck also needs new binding and a refret. the binding on the body was slightly damaged, but i was able to sand out most things. there is some pitting from the heat i presume, but i will get some filler and fill those small holes. the guitar was a black beauty, and i was hoping for some nice grain underneath, but no such luck, average maple top that would have looked nice, but it had some nasty brown streaks in it. so black it gets.
  8. its a real gibson, a 1970 custom, but the guitar was in a fire and the finish was already pretty destroyed. so wahtever vaule it had is no neglible.
  9. like the tilte says. I am refinishing a les paul. should i do the whole ting at once, or the body and then the neck?
  10. I have a gibson les paul with a black finish on it. It is quite old and the guitar was in a fire and some of the finish is burnt. I am planning on stripping the paint and painting the guitar black again. I don't want to damage the binding. Can i use a paint stripper? i have already stripped the neck with something called "Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint and Varnish Remover. It worked great. can i use this on the body, or will it damage the binding? as well once the guitar is done, what is the best way to mask of the binding when i respray the guitar?
  11. I am currently restoring a les paul that was in a fire. the headstock is complelty ruined. The custom logo (diamond one) will need to be redone. But the inlaid gibson logo survived completely intact. how can i mask off the lgo beofre spraying the guitar? i have to spray as the guitar is black. It would be much easier if i could stain, as the stain just wipes off, but with the black paint how can i properly mask the logo? thanks for any help.
  12. I am currently restroing a 1970 (i think) gibson les paul custom. I have been looking around for a while but have been unable to find any method for removing bits of yellow that is on the binding. Its not as if its a normal aging, where everything yellows, but more like there are parts that are an ugly yellow, and other parts of the binding that are still nice and white. Is there any chemical that can take of the yellow? or would i just have to replace the binding? thanks for your help.
