This would be a humbucker and it would make a bassier sound. I'm pretty sure that what makes the difference is that the 3-3 coil goes around all 6 strings instead of a coil around the bottom 3 in series w/ one around the top. I'm just guessing, but I think that's the main difference between a humbucker and a singlecoil.

Yeah, be really careful and read all of the safety stuff. Also, if you are working with the amp turned on to measure voltages or something, work with one hand behind your back because if your hands touch the wrong parts a shock will go through your heart.

Do you know a good place to get wider polepieces like for MM or P basses?

Where does everybody go to get parts for making pickups? Stewmac has some, but they don't have different types of magnets, different width polepieces, etc.

Would this design for a real humcancelling single coil work? (It's not just 2 coils in a single coil-sized pickup).

I know it would be hard to wind, I'm just wondering if it would work. Basically the point of it is that the wire goes clockwise around the + polepieces, and counterclockwise around the - ones.

You could put 2 metal plates close to eachother but not touching. One goes to the hot signal and one goes to ground so when you put your finger over the gap it would ground it. This wouldn't shock you because it would only be going through your finger. This might not perfectly ground it because your finger would have alot of resistance, but it's worth a try.

With an Ebony fretboard, I would think that would brighten up the Basswood choice nicely.

I was making a 5-piece neck for strength, so I picked the ebony because I thought that the walnut would darken the tone.

Yeah I'm mostly making an RG-style guitar because it's the guitar I like most that I wood be able to build now. After this I'm probably going to make a set-neck carved-top guitar with a flame maple top.

Yeah I didn't know about alder because it's used on alot of ESP's and heavy metal guitars but Fender also uses it so is it just good for everything? I don't know that much about guitar design so I just want some suggestions.

Soon I'm going to start building an Ibanez RG-style guitar and, because this is my first guitar that I am designing, I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions if I should change it. This guitar will be used for everything from rock-and-roll to heavy metal, and here are the specs:

-Original Floyd Rose

-Basswood body

-5 piece maple/walnut neck

-Ebony fingerboard

-DiMarzio D Sonic + Air Norton: same as John Petrucci

I know that the Floyd Rose and 5-piece neck are going to make this a little harder to make, but I've done some wood working before and I'm going to buy routing templates for the FR and everything.
