  1. It think I'll win the prize for the slowest build in history ;D I had a bit of spare time on my hands today so I made a start on the final sanding. There were a few areas of the top with some slight tear out from the round over, only very minor tear out but it was a major pain to sand out but it was all worth while when I saw the results when it was wiped over with some Naptha.

All is not lost with the Wenge blank... although the neck was scrap I've managed to make a neck blank up from the section that was cut out of the back of the original blank, along with a plain piece of Wenge for the headstock/ears. Not sure what I'll use it for yet but I'm sure it will come in for something!

  2. I have one of these.... http://www.wolfcraft.co.uk/jcatalog_genera...57_product.html

....it works pretty well, the springs are a little erm...well, 'springy' :D for my liking but the rest is well put together, for the money anyway. I use my micro mill for drilling pretty much everything nowadays so I very rarely use it. Would I recommend it as an alternative to a drill press?....No, it's a handy tool for general DIY work but for drilling accurate holes in guitars I'd go for a drill press without a doubt.

  3. Wenge fretboard blanks... they all measure approx: 500mm x 62mm x 7.5mm. I have a lot more to sell as well as these so I'll happily offer a discount for multiple buys just ask.

Slotting is an extra £4 per board, you can choose from the following scale lengths... 25.5", 25", 24.75" or 24.625"

£6 per board or buy all 3 for £12 (prices include postage), payment via Paypal, UK only.

  4. this is going to be a great looking guitar. is that body really thick? in that last pic the heal looks really thick.

    Nope, it's 1 3/4" thick.

Real nice Simo, always super clean work. How's the bass going?

The bass is going good thanks, the body just needs final sanding and the neck needs a bit of fretwork doing and then it'll be ready for finishing :D

Awesome. My goal is to achieve the perfect clean look in my woodworking, as you're obviously doing regularly.

Thanks :D yeah apart from the disaster with the original neck i'm quite happy with the way this one's turning out.

There's been a bit of a change with the neck... the original plan was to make a neck with a 3x3 headstock and attach it to the body using a deep set neck joint. However, after the mishap with the original neck I was considering using a Strat style headstock instead, so I pulled out a part finished Strat neck that had been collecting dust under my workbench (I made it last year for a friends guitar but ended up not using it) and rested it in position on top of the body to get an idea of how it would look, which then gave me an idea... yes you've guessed it, I've decided to change the guitar to a bolt on and use the Strat neck. It's made from 2 pieces of Black Limba with a Mac Ebony fretboard.

  5. It was all going too well.... while routing the neck this afternoon a chunk of Wenge splintered off and unluckily for me it's not in a place that will be carved out. There's a chance it could be repaired but I doubt it will be unnoticeable and being a bit of perfectionist I'm going to start over on the neck.

  6. I have 12 Wenge fretboards for sale, I've numbered each piece so you can take your pick. They all measure approx: 500mm x 62mm x 7.5mm. 7. Thanks guys :D I'm still waiting for some Maple for the neck to arrive before I can really get stuck into some more work on this project. Today I decided to spend some time making a cavity control cover and trem cover, they were cut from an off-cut of the top wood, I didn't have time to finish them today but here's a pic to give you an idea of how they look...

  8. I've not done a great deal of work since the last update... after putting in the silver tube side dots (I'll take pic's of them next time I have my camera out) I decided to string her up to see how it played before finishing... and it's good, in fact it played so nicely I kept it strung up and have been playing it like this for nearly 2 weeks :D but it's time to tear it apart now and get starting with the final sanding and finishing.

  9. I recently brought a very thick bookmatched set and had it cut again to make a pair of 3/8" sets, one was used on my latest guitar (see UKGB 'In Progress' forum for pics) and this is the other. I was going to keep it for a future project but I've decided to let it go.

There is a small crack in the pale section, but it is very, very solid, it won't cause any problems, I've taken a close up so you can see it a bit clearer. They are sawn, not planed but the finish off the saw is very good and level, it won't take too much cleaning up with a plane.

    Approx Sizes: (each piece)

    21" tapering to 22 1/2" long

    7 1/2" tapering to a HUGE 12" wide!

    3/8" thick

£35 inc postage, payment via Paypal, UK only :D

Sorry the pics aren't all that great, they were taken on my phone.

  10. Hey guys, it's been a while since I've posted any of my work on here... in fact I've had to take a bit of a break from guitar building for a couple of months but I'm back in full swing now. After much head scratching I've decided to put my last guitar build on the shelf (some of you will remember seeing my Black Limba Singlecut on here) and start a fresh. Although there were no major errors with it, there were just too many small things that bugged me (I'm a bit of a perfectionist B)), especially after starting work on my 6 string bass I could see that my work could be (and should be) a lot better. Anyway, don't panic the Singlecut won't be WOD'd or burnt :D I'm sure I'll do something with it one day but for now I want to concentrate on other projects.

The 6 string bass is coming along nicely, in fact it's almost ready for final sanding and finishing (updates coming soon), while I was waiting for some side dot material to arrive (bloody postal strikes :D) I decided to start work on my next guitar, here's the spec...

Korina body with an English Walnut top

    Wilkinson trem

2 humbuckers (not decided what I'm using yet)

    22 fret, 25.5 scale

I'm still undecided on the neck/fretboard wood, I do have a piece of Wenge that I'll be planing tomorrow, so we'll see... a Wenge neck is tempting, I'm just not sure if I want anymore splinters! B) Anyway, here's some pic's, sorry if some of them aren't that great, my camera is on it's last legs so these were taken on my phone.

  11. I've been having a clear out of my workshop today, these have been sitting under my workbench gathering dust for ages, I don't really have a use for any of them anymore so I'm selling them off cheap.

They're all made by Ferm, obviously they're all used but they're in full working order, the pad on the Detail Sander is worn slightly on the front point, still does it's job fine. I'd rather sell them as a job lot...so, £15 for ALL 3, INC POSTAGE. Paypal only :D
