If its a strat guard then Warmoth will rout one in s/h. They have a ton of options. Warmoth.com
yeah they are awesome for pickguards, but im making an acrylic pickguard.
-
according to most tone freaks, tone is 'thinner' ever so slightly with a FR tremolo, but its not very noticeable at all....
they're probably just not used to playing in tune
I know that feeling . I'm thinking of either blocking off the trem completely on my strat and making it a hard tailpiece, or fitting it with a FR. I just don't like the idea of having to unlock the nut to change tunings .
Devon
wait isnt FR floyd rose? and dont those require a locking nut? so wouldnt you have to unlock the nut w/one ?
i dunno man, i dont think a Floyd Rose gives bad tone, or worse then a regular trem. We all know how tone-**** Vai is, he uses mostly all Floyd Roses!

Oh yeah, I've nicked my fair share of templates
I learned to use a dab of superglue, let it dry, then sand it flat and back to normal.
If you're even thinking about using no pickguard, then hold up until you get it straightened out, it will be quite obvious.
i just find it might be a hassle to make my own pickguard. Not sure if anyone sells S/H pickguards..seen S/S/H...S/S/S...and H/H, but no S/H

Just routed my humbucker about 1/2inch, wanted to know how deep you should routee for a humbucker and how deep for a single coil, thanks oodles
oooooo another question, if part of my stewmac single coil routing template got scrapped off a bit...does that not even matter if I'm going to have a pickguard because It would be covered? or should I still be extra careful because Im not sure about having a pickguard yet? Would it be very noticable? (it's a very small notch that just sort of curves up...some of the acrilyc got routed out on my practice session )

I'm not certain how much neons are like flourescent lights but they're almost cousins right???
Don't neons have a threshold where they basically don't work and then once they start up they need a high but not as high voltage to keep them up and running...they don't really have a "dim"...I have seen some that aren't at full brightness but never on purpose??
and wouldn't the camera flash just give a short burst...how could it be sustained?? I doubt the 9v would handle it
It'd be a neat idea and it's not impossible but I'd imagine an external power source like what was mentioned a while ago...
And the discharge of the flash would almost certainly be picked up even if it was well shielded...
Meh...It's more trouble than I'd bother with...
Ibanez made a guitar in the 80's that was clear and had lights in it...and they lit based on the frequency from the PU's...neat stuff...
how about my idea with a mini-strobe light(a camera flash that keeps going off!) under the pickguard
ok now im dreaming

oh come on you know you want a lp with a gold original floyd rose and neon inlays
nah that looks good. mahagony and mahagony with gibson pickups is going to get you that warm LP sound, and even though most LP's neck is angled back, it'll prolly be best just to do a bolt on for your first.

What would be a better site to buy a fretboard off of?
Stewmac
LMI
is LMI probably more accurate/advanced or what? thoughts? ive heard great things about stewmacs fingerboards.

Contouring the body on the back of the guitar where it hits your stomach (so it's comfortable) how do you go about doing this? I assume you could just sand it down, but is there an easier way? It's mahagony and It's an ibanez jem shape, really want to contour it so it's more comfortable to play.

im 16 and im building mine, tools is probably my biggest problem besides money.
-
Well the hardware can always be moved to another guitar so that's a given. Just purchase the best you can simply afford because you can move it to the next one.
If this is your first though, I would say build it without going wild on exotic and expensive wood itself for the body and fret board.
Even though your going to take your time and try to make it the ultimate, use this one as a learning curve for the second one. Misteaks and problems will arise and you'll figure out a better way to work around them, plus your going to be able to slide right on past them the second go around from experiance.
yeah thanks.... im gonna just go with indian rosewood instead of brazilian or ebony, just 15$...hey Brian, you sell floyd roses i hear?
-
Krazyderek and brian sell floyds.
can I get the links to brains/dereks webpages if you guys have webpages or should I PM etc?
-
Krazyderek and brian sell floyds. Brian has an aresenal of liscenced ones, dereck has originals. Great prices too. Occasionally Ebay has a good floyd, but it's risky if you dont know what youre doing/getting
Yeah, listen to his advice when you buy a floyd off of ebay. People can play tricks with words and get away with it..
I would steer you away from floyd rose off of ebay

Ok, I'd love to build my dream guitar but, seeing as it's my first guitar, what if it's horrible? I know the body will be fine but what if the fretting is horrible and it wrecks the rest of the guitar and i have a 150$ bridge on a POS guitar? etc...thoughts please?
-
kind of on the subject....I take digital photos of my guitar work but theyre HUGE, how can i make them smaller without blurring them? is it a camera setting on the camera, or is it in the Kodak Workshop program thing er what?
-
Keep in mind that floyd rose is liscened not an Original. an Original is ideal, liscened just means they pay floyd or whoever for the name floyd rose and they can use cheaper parts etc...
-
try the little low voltage christmas tree lights.. the little flashin ones are great for this.. i have a sack of them if anyone wants some..
wouldnt those be more of a hassle because a.) they're a lot taller and would be harder to drill holes for? b.) they arent as bright so you would need more? I dunno you're the expert, so emphasize a bit for me please.

Why not just buy a set of Fingerboard Radius Guages.
yeah..i think that is what he meant by "weird tools"
oops beat me to it
-
whats that red thing? looks like an l.e.d. from a pedal or something..
-
a guitar builders best friend....... Dremel
those are fairly small...about how much do they go for? Im pretty sure a family member of mine might have one...but are they like 50?
-
Why wierd tools? You measure the width of the fingerboard at one spot and the height in the middle and on the side of that spot and then you have everything you need to calc the radius....
Yeah thanks that's all I wanted to know.....so how would I go about finding the radius of my gibson LP?
btw by weird tools I meant the type of stuff Stewmac sells, I mean like special rulers and such, they arent weird, you just cant find them at your local hardware store usually. Special Tools I should say?
-
That upper horn handle is re-e-e-e-al unusual touch, I might say.
mullmuzzler | OSSMT
yeah it's funny looking
what kind of tool would you use for that? i member seeing it on the sight of a guy that made a jem....
-
FINGERBOARD radius is a section of a circle...in this case,a 12" circle...not half of a circle,just a small section of it
erm wait so can a person somehow find out the fingerboard radius on their fingerboarD?
edit: by measuring, not by reasearch...or do you need some weird tools?

Here's an old optical illusion trick you could do. Place a mirror in the back of the cavity and also make the guard out of a see through mirror material with the mirror facing inward towards the other one. Then when you hit the lights it looks like a tunnel of lights going back forever.
that'd be awesome. I thought about that in my topic on Solid body (using just one mirror though, I didnt think about two facing each other) so what kind of material would the pickguard be made out of? i cant quite grasp how you would see through a mirror or something...
