Hi guys,

I sprayed some wood with automotive paint yesterday, let it dry and few times and put a few layers on. How long do you think it will be until I can sand it a little to before applying the last coat? The finish isn't hugely important, I just want to get the fingerprints out that I made by touching it when it wasn't dry haha!

Also, with single core wire it's much harder to manipulate and use. Multi core wire is what you want for most things really...

You can't see it, evidently. I kinda like it but it's not terribly ergonomic, and I don't really like how the body goes up the neck...but that's just me.

That wood is fantastic, I wish I could have such awesome accidents.

I think it would be awesome, as I think other have said, to have a different wood where the frets would be, but flat to the board so you have fret markers but get the fretless sound. I don't mean, though, that you need the fret markers, more that it would be cool, especially when others see it up close.

I don't know the answer, but couldn't you test it on random bits of wood before doing on the body?

I love that wood for the top! The whole thing looks great, good luck with that. I can't wait to see the result!

The appalling quality of that site annoys me haha! I would love some blank ones actually, I just have to find them. I'll be on the search now. I think I saw some blank ones on ebay the other day. I'd share them with anyone if they want them as I only need one.

Oh also, what would you lot recommend as the cleaning method for this neck? The frets are dirty and rough. Should I lightly sand them and leave it at that?

Cool, that's what I was expecting. Would the refinishing just be varnishing or lacquering it again? No staining if I liked the colour?

i think there some way out using static currents or somthing to help as well .......not 100% sure though year 10 science is as far as it went for my in affraid

That would be by putting opposite currents through the paint and the body of the guitar IF it was metal. It would work if you gave the paint a negative charge as it came out of the can causing each drop of paint to repel the other spreading out more. But it would also require the guitar to be made of metal to attract the paint, and have a positive charge. I think I'm right?

What about a layer of conductive paint applied before the colour layer?

If you wanted to use this method, then yes. I'm not completely sure that the conductive layer would be needed though. Also, I'm not sure if the advantages are amazing: smooth first coat & paint conservation. If you want to do this, then the most important part would be running a current through the nozzle of the paint can. Also, would this not lead to an attraction by dust for the positively charged particles? All bits of dust have different charges.

Hi there,

My neck has just come from ebay and it has an apalling applied decal on which says its a fender strat when its clearly not even a strat haha. I was just wondering what the best method for removing this was? Is it sanding? I am likely to sand the thing anyway...

I've been searching around today compiling a list of the stuff I need to make my guitar, and it's long! I didn't realise how long it would be haha! Anyway, I'm going for an HSH setup on the pickups and I'm getting the humbuckers with nickel covers. Problem is, I want the pickups to be uniform and therefore need nickel pickup covers for the single coil one. Anybody got any ideas where I can get these? I can't seem to find any! If nickel is close enough to chrome I could probably live with that too. Preferably in the UK.

It's probably just broken and hit him in the face while he was playing it, thus he doesn't want to show anyone because it's broken! Could you ever actually learn anything for a 13 string bass though?! And you'd never use half the frets. Seems pointless. I tink a 6 string bass, maybe a 7 really is the limit.

My name's Jono, I'm 17 and I live just outside London.

I'm about to start building my first electric guitar - a strat. I have an acoustic at the moment and I'm not a good guitarist by any stretch of the imagination, but this looks fun!

I've bought a start body and a random neck with a strange headstock for now, so I'm going to see what I can do with those. I hope to strip down the body and paint it vintage creme. I have a friend who's an amazing artist, he does some really strange but awesome stuff. I'm hoping he can pull something out of the bag onto my guitar, so I'll have vintage creme + psychedelic painting. I'm going to have a black scratch plate with probably white knobs. And I want to have an HSH pickup arrangement with all pickups covered in chrome with a telecaster bridge cover, and all the rest of the hardware chrome too.

I'm really really looking forward to this project, and it's the summer so I have the time (and hopefully the money) to do this project.

I'd like your advice on refinishing the body. First I'm going to chemically strip it, because knowing me, using other methods I'll really muck it up and this seems the most foolproof. And then I'll do the few layers of spraying and sanding paint. What I'd like to know is, if my friend does paint on the guitar, what kind of paint should be used as it won't be anything out of a can. I'm also assuming that this should go under the lacquer because I obviously want to preserve it. All in all would you say, also, that this is a good approach?
