oh my God.. I lost my Tele-king title. Geez Doug, I make my next geetar blue.
What a wonderful guitar... awesome... freakin' awesome...
-
Dcamp's got a point though. Sandy1070 sells alot of very nice tops for little money.
I wouldn't use spalted maple for a first project though. It's a bitch to work on.
The soft spots shrink when you look at it and some of the hard parts wear out your router bits fast....
-
I'd love to have the Vai "Liberty" backing track....
All I can offer is some backing tracks of my own ****.... but who wants that?> :-)
-
You could easily build one of the fish slappers spalted strats with this piece.
Sure wish I had the cash
that piece ain't that nice.. other than that, working with spalted maple isn't that easy....
-
I've never been much of a LP fan, but your pics make me wanna build one. Very very nice....
-
well, the pics ain't working.
Either you wired it wrong or the pups are dead. My guess is that you made a wiring mistake.
Goto the Seymour Duncan web site and download the appropriate schematics for your configuration and start to debug.
-
I like it, except the position of the control cavity cover. It should be placed more backwards.
-
As usual, your guitars are really ugly Drak. I would paint that thing black so you won't see that ugly top.....
Man, that's one of the most amazing tops I've ever seen.... luv it...
-
Thanks Derek.
I'm building a bass that has no overlappring fretboard (at the neck heel), so I want the radius of the heel to be a perfect fit.
I did make something like Hotrod described, but it didn't work too well. Maybe I'll just do it by hand.
-
at least we have finished guitars...
-
-
I do it the same way as Scott.
-
Talking about cars and guitars. this looks pretty cool too
-
hmmmm, I think you might be able to make something out of that body if you give it somewhat of a AANJ heel.....
-
.Even though i might not be able to do better myself, should he not take the advice of an onlooker who was offering advice just because i have no experienceNeal, I'm sure that's what Jeff is doing. He took alot of **** before this and I'm sure he does something with the criticism from the experienced builders.
russian himself doesn't take criticism very well regarding his own project.
-
check out the warmoth site... your question is answered in great detail right there
-
cool, thanks
do you know where I could get a free coreldraw program, or would i have to pay?
haha.... you know the answer, right?
But guess what.. I want to build a bass too and I think it'll be a Stingray, so maybe I'll make a drawing one of these days.

first, what sound are you after?
Ebony can be used for a fingerboard, but can be tough to work on. I'd suggest to use rosewood for a fingerboard. You can buy pre-slotted boards from Stew Mac.
Wiring a strat or any passive guitar is not hard at all. There's alot of foolproof schematics/diagrams out there.
Are you planning on building a strat?
I personally prefer hardtails as I never use a tremolo. I suggest to use use a fixed bridge if you're not planning to use a trem.

I'm allowed to not be able to play baseball worth a damn and yet still think the Detroit Tigers suck ass, too. Truerussian wasn't criticizing as a "sour grapes" attack, or as a deeply subconscious psychological response to his current inferiority as a luthier, but as a third party commenting on what COULD BE IMPROVED about another luthier's work.
whatever, but this is not the baseball forum
-
Welcome,
I can tell you're enthousiastic..
I built 4 strats. Before you do anything, what are your plans? Build one from scratch or start out with a neck and/or body you order.
I suggest to make a guitar from scratch.. it's so much fun and can really be done with good results.
My first built is still my main strat. It's better than all my Fender's

I was commenting on the fact that TSL, Alex, and Weezerboy, three well established members of this site, were openly ridiculing TrueRussian's work.
What Truerussian said wasn't offensive IMO. He was pointing out that in his opinion, it isn't worth cutting corners because you will always know that you did, even if others didn't know that. He was reinforcing what Drak said about professionally built acoustics with his view of why Litch should neaten up the routs. This is a valid point, and one on which I agree with him.
Constructive criticism is a great thing. We were giving Litch constructive criticism, as was TrueRussian. Others were not paying that same respect to Truerussian, and proceeded to openly ridicule his work as a brash response to his misunderstood statement.
I don't mean to inflame, and I'm trying to be civil. Maybe I missed something, but if Truerussian is not allowed to give constructive criticism despite the fact that he is still learning himself, then the entire forum community has lost its purpose. If only custom builders can express their opinions of the work of others, we might as well make this a 9-5 Monday through Friday "ask the experts" help line. It is the fact that anyone of any skill level can express an unbiased opinion of custom guitars that forms an integral backbone in the very structure of this web community.
Oh give me a break.
I didn't like the tone of that post. Mosts of his last posts have this "know it all" tone anyway.
If you can't make a straight neck and a decent rout yourself you should shut up about somebody not making straight routs.
It'd pretty much be like me criticizing Clavin's inlays because my inlay work suck ass!
Now back to the topic, before I start a real rant
-
C'mon, guys, let's not fall into this kind of thing again...
We're defending a long time forum member here. He took alot of **** and rather than being a stuborn ass, he took it as a man and works hard to improve his work.
I really don't think he needs that kinda "advice" from a noob who can't do any better himself.
-
yes the quality of the routes really jumps out at me in the picture, even if they will be covered, i think it would be hard to live with the fact that every time you pick up the guitar youll think about a glaring flaw you left in it
Although I agree with Drak, I must say that Jeff is trying and definately is improving.
And you, Truerussian, I don't think your comments are appropriate if you take a close look at your guitar.
-
So you can't just use superglue as a grain/pore filler and then clearcoat with laquer on top of that I guess
yes you can. My spalt strat was done that way
