  5. heres my design for my latest project: i have a sketch that looks much better, ill try to scan it at school today and show it. so far, what i plan to do is use some swamp ash i have for the body with a flame maple top/blue to green carriburst. i might make it semi-hollow or carve some of the insides out due to the weight of this beast. pickguard will probably be black, with black speed knobs. chrome hardware, most likely with mahogany necks/rosewood fretboard. let me know what you think, ive never seen a double neck les paul, and ive wanted a double neck for a while, so i thought this would be better than the SG that i was going to do. -Kyle

  7. if you mean the pickguard in the front, you could veneer the front and make it rear routed. as far as the rear cavity cover, you could make covers out of similar wood, stained the same color as the rest of it, and recess it. it'd be barely noticible. if you dont want to do something else though, i would go with a blues burst. best of luck
  8. oh, we already determined that my exploer isnt a gibson
  9. nope, epiphones arent gibson seconds, the guide made that very clear what about the bridge?
  10. okay, well the guide started by explaining the process of making them they have steam pressed flame maple tops that are cut to rough shape by a computer. they then get the machine cut backs, and hand assemble the mid sections. necks are sent to them in blanks, and are then hand cut and shaped. they have the fretboards assembled somwhere else and are sent to them finished/fretted/inlayed. the headstock veneers are also made somewhere else, but handmade right down to the Gibson inlay. also, the necks are scalloped by hand with, get this, a belt sander. they have a machine that lines up the maple top/back/mid section of the body, where its glued. after that, it gets a sand job, then the binding. for some guitars, such as the Lucile, it has 6 layers of binding, all around it. all done by hand. the finish is also done by hand, and the sunbursts are freehanded by special artists. after the finish is done, they have people that scrape the finish off the binding, then it goes into clear coat after that, all the hardware/electronics are mounted, and it goes through a very detailed inspection. if theres something wrong with the finish, they dont do repair work, they strip the whole thing and start over. if there's something wrong with the guitar at all, say the binding is gourged when the finish is scraped off of it, they remove the hardware and cut it into 1x1" peices, put it in the dumpster, and guard the dumpster till the trash people come. all this just for the sake of keeping their reputation as the best. crazy stuff
  11. just got back from memphis, where i got to go on a tour of the gibson semi-holowbody factory i got to go through the entire factory and learn about how gibsons are made, for the most part by hand, and their insane quality control. if you ever get a chance to, you should go
  12. its common practice to cut it exactly one fret past what you want, for example if the fret calculator tells you the 23rd fret is 20" from the nut, and the 24th is 20.2", cut the fretboard 20.2". good luck
  13. how bout some pics, hynunsu? im sure we'd all love to see your work
  14. if you fret then finish, can you level/dress the frets before finishing, then just sand the finish off the top? seems like that'd be best...
  15. im not sure what your question is
  16. hey greg and welcome to the world of guitar building http://www.guitarbuildingtemplates.com/electricguitar.htm offers a set of telecaster templates in both plexiglass and 1/4" wood i would suggest wood because its twice as thick as the plexiglass, and plegiglass tends to break and crack, for me anyways start by buying those templates and you can either set the templates on the wood and route it out, or just trace around them best of luck with everything, keep us posted!
