i believe this smilie says it all:
-
oh, cool. but about the question, basswood is fine, for guitar building. just watch out, cause its soft
-
oh yeh, the question. em, isn't there a thread about basically the same subject on this forum right now?
-
fair enough, and i suppose they are trying to sell it. although, i just had a look and its says this:
Basswood (Tilia americana): This is a lighter weight wood normally producing Strat® bodies under 4 lbs. The color is white, but often has nasty green mineral streaks in it. This is a closed-grain wood, but it can absorb a lot of finish. This is not a good wood for clear finishes; It is quite soft, and does not take abuse well. Soundwise, Basswood has a nice, warm tone.
turns out i am wrong! ah well, you live and learn, eh?

hey i could be wrong. i'm pretty sure i quoted straight from the warmoth site. i'll have a look...........

I asked at the MIMF forums a while ago about building with simple tools (have a look, thread should be on the first page of the "Solidbody and Semi-Hollowbody" bit. www.mimf.com click on the "MIMForum" sign). They said that a router is really the only essential tool, and even then, its not essential, its just far easier to make things accurate with one. It is perfectly alright to cut body with a hand saw, should you be particularly tool-deficient. On the downside, it wouls take a while. On the upside, as someone on my thread said, you end up with arms like "The Rock"!

Since this is the announcement forum, i announce that i exist! Hi! I've been observing for a few weeks now, and it looks like a kick-ass forum. Very informative, and the people know their stuff, which is excellent, as I'm gonna get into guitar building in the next few months, so no doubt y'all see alot more of me!

...as does the current Peavey EVH model. Basswood is a very toneful wood, with a tone somewhere between mahogany and alder, if i remember correctly.
-
nope. user name is the same there too: spirit. i do appear, just not much, although i'm in a few topics there right now.
